This was on Talking Pictures this afternoon, all about his life.

What a voice! What a loss!

Oh I missed it. Will see if I can catch up with it. Wonderful voice, wonderful songs.

Marydoll Sun 31-Oct-21 19:40:52

I loved his voice, too.

Urmstongran Sun 31-Oct-21 19:42:44

My dad’s favourite song was MM singing ‘Autumn Leaves’. A warm, strong voice.

merlotgran Sun 31-Oct-21 19:48:55

My dad loved Matt Monro as well. 'Days Like These' was his favourite.

Kate1949 Sun 31-Oct-21 19:51:48

Oh he was great. We have a CD somewhere.

I can remember a teacher saying that Matt Monroe was her favourite singer! I’m afraid I was very dismissal, but she told me that when I got older I would appreciate his voice!
So true. I love his voice and I’m never tired of playing his songs.. My favourite is “Days Like These” too.
A few years ago I went to a concert in which his son was singing. It was very disappointing.

My Dad had all his records too. They were the songs of my childhood.

BlueBelle Sun 31-Oct-21 20:15:48

My mums favourite dads was Shirley Bassey

Oh, I missed it, didn’t know it was on. I hope it’s repeated.

I loved his voice - I remember once being in a crowded cafe and Portrait of My Love was playing on the radio and it literally moved me to tears.

My dad used to sing at charity events in central Scotland,he wasn't proffessional but had a fab voice ,sung everything from opera to pop .We used to help him learn his lyrics for new songs there were always a couple of Matt Monro songs in his set .That means I know the lyrics to practically his whole songbook .Fabulous voice ,very unique. If You Go Away is one of my favourites and Softly as I Leave You another .

He was also a great giggler, couldn`t keep a straight face when someone was doing something daft. Lovely man.

MissAdventure Sun 31-Oct-21 23:28:01

I don't know all of his songs, but I absolutely love his voice. smile

Wonderful singer, my personal favourite From Russia With Love. I believe he was a very nice man too, someone I knew met him once.

Apparently Softly As I Leave You was played in the church at his funeral.

Not a dry eye in the house I bet.

I was glued to the telly with this and thoroughly enjoyed it as Matt Monro has always been a favourite. How lovely to watch an in-depth programme instead of a quick half-hour which barely scratches the surface.
I've just flicked through the tv magazine @mrswoo and see that it'll be repeated on Thursday at 2,55-4.40 pm so we can indulge again. I've still got his lovely, warm voice 'ear-worming' through my brain.

Which channel will it be on?

Niobe Mon 01-Nov-21 08:35:57

Talking Pictures is Freeview channel 81 , Sky Ch 328, Freesat 306 and Virgin 445. It’s worth having a look at the guide to see what’s on every day. Some really great films and they do repeat regularly. I saw that the Matt Monroe programme was on but was unable to watch. I will be looking out for it.

Niobe Mon 01-Nov-21 08:39:03

Just had a look and it is being repeated this Thursday , the 4th of November , at 2:55 pm.

Sparklefizz Mon 01-Nov-21 10:05:34

Thank you Niobe

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 01-Nov-21 11:00:30

Thanks from me too.

Kate1949 Mon 01-Nov-21 12:10:20

Thanks Niobe. I will record it. I think I've seen it before or something similar but it's worth another watch.

BBbevan Mon 01-Nov-21 12:26:52

Every time he came on, tv or radio, my Dad said ‘ He used to be a bus conductor, or driver’. Drove us mad .

MissAdventure Mon 01-Nov-21 12:56:54

grin

Thank you for this tip. We watched it last night, such a lovely programme. We’re currently listening to a Matt Monro album that Dh has unearthed. None of the modern methods of tweaking recordings, just his pure voice - you can’t improve on perfection. ❤️

I was shocked to learn in the programme about his death, I’d always thought he’d had a heart attack while on tour.
