Absolutely LOVE Call My Agent which is French but subtitled. Just finished S3, one more to go. I find it quite charming.

Interesting to see how many of us enjoy the European tv series. We have found them really good, they seem to get on with the story better than the British ones who seem to 'pad the story out' too much.
Just look up European on Netflix, there are loads of good ones.

Thank you. We have watched the majority of these and agree with your recommendations.
Perhaps we should work out a warning system such as “not for pearl clutchers” (thinking of the first couple of minutes of Rita and much of Rake).
Many of the series we watch come with “subtitles” but I know some people don’t like them.
There are some good series which are on the “saccharine sweet” side such as Chesapeake Bay, and Virgin River, good but too much of them induces a sugar induced headache.
Any other suggestions for worthwhile watches and warnings?

If you can find it then the Turkish series Resurrection:Ertugrul and the follow up Kurulus:Osman are very good. Subtitled though and very long series. Hubby and I love them.

We’ve been back to White Collar twice now. A skilled thief and con artist taken on by the FBI. Light, interesting and amusing. Matt Bomer very easy on the eye.

I'm currently watching 'Money Heist'. Into series 3 in less than a week. Binge watching of course. I really must wean myself off my Covid addiction to this network. But not until I get to the end of this one. If you liked 'Breaking Bad' you will probably like this one.

Bloodline is a family saga set in The Florida Keys. Sam Shepard and Sissy Spaceck play the parents of four adult children, three sons and one daughter. One son, the black sheep of the family, returns and causes a lot of problems for the family. I believe there are four series.

Thanks Shelbel. This afternoon OH watched a documentary on Turkey which referred to this series so he was keen to try it. He is hooked and I am fascinated by the costumes and scenery though it is on the bloodthirsty side for me so far. I’ll give it a few more episodes.

Another here for the European TV series. I recently binge-watched Home for Christmas, which is Norwegian, but is also dubbed into English. So refreshing to see actors who look like normal people.

I watched The Plagues of Breslau yesterday , delightfully gruesome - might watch it again !

I don’t think anyone’s mentioned The Queen’s Gambit which was one of the standouts for me this year.
Also loved:
Call My Agent
Lupin
Godless
The Money Heist
Squid Game (quite violent but strangely compelling)

We watched a side splitting film at the weekend with our kids. ‘ The Office Christmas Party’, with Jennifer Anniston, and Jason Bateman. Not for kids!?

Also Breaking Bad is brilliant...but watch Better Call Saul first. Although it was only made a few years ago, it’s the ‘ prequel’ to Breaking Bad.

Espee, glad you found the Turkish series. I agree, it is a bit violent but have you noticed that they blur it? At least there's no sex in it. I found the whole thing about their relationships and way of life fascinating. The rules about touching etc.

It's very addictive.

A thank you for the link Shelbel. We too watched the documentary and you have saved me a search for thé séries. ?

Are all these recommendations on Netflix ?

Totally agree about Offsrping Rita Rake and Call my agent, loved them all

There’s one set in Marseille with that rather large French actor whose name has escaped me….oh yes Gerard depardieu
It might even be called Marseille…..
No I haven’t been at the ????

I loved the Oscar winning Mexican black and white film Roma Spanish with subtitles. It's quite slow, I don't always mind that if it is worth the wait I thought it was.

Watched all the Spirals before they reached Netflix. Other than that have enjoyed The Crown, Unorthodox, The Queen's Gambit, The Dig, Alias Grace. Like Prime they have an awful lot of rubbish, I'm watching Dead to Me right now, it's alright to kind of zone out with watchable enough but not really hooked, that takes something really special for me such as any of the aforementioned or the superb Mare of Eastown not on Netflix, not sure how we got hold of that because we don't have Sky. I recently re watched all The Unforgottens I thought they were so good. I've dumped loads of series watch a few episodes, Ozarks is one, they start off okay and then I just go off them, maybe it's me hmm

Netflix will be launching the new Olivia Coleman film The Lost Daughter which has very good reviews, I look forward to seeing that.

Anyone watched Collateral? Can you recommend it?
Some great actors in it.

Esspee Mon 20-Dec-21 18:41:47

Yes Lucca. It is Marseille. We enjoyed it too.
Have you seen Borgen? Set in the Danish Parliament, we watched it after another excellent Danish series which I can’t remember the name of.
Then there’s Greenleaf about a church dynasty in America. The first couple of episodes looked like being very religious but I’m glad we kept going, excellent series.
