I’ve always despised the man.
I’ve just read what he said about Gypsy Roma Traveller people, and I’m just disgusted.
I’ve worked extensively with Roma children and their families.
He has said that his ‘joke’ was an excellent one because it was ‘educational’.
I wish him nothing but ill.

Kalu Sun 06-Feb-22 09:23:27

I avoid watching anything he is part of. Don’t find him funny at all but his laugh, especially, just grates.

HowVeryDareYou Sun 06-Feb-22 09:23:27

He's not funny, just vulgar, crass and downright nasty. He also makes "jokes" about Alzheimer's, disability and rape.

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 09:23:22

Have you actually read what he said though Riverwalk?
I sort of agree with what you said; but it doesn’t actually apply to what he said.

Nortsat Sun 06-Feb-22 09:23:14

I was incredulous at this ‘joke’.
I think he should be made a social outcast.
He ought to be removed from any of the television projects he is involved in.
He needs to be held accountable and there should be consequences.
What a vile creature.

Galaxy Sun 06-Feb-22 09:20:21

Its complex though because for example both Ricky Gervais and David Baddiel have told jokes about the holocaust so it is possible to make jokes about the horror of it that arent hateful. I am just wary that anger against Jimmy Carr may be used to try to censor comedy which is a bad idea.

Riverwalk Sun 06-Feb-22 09:17:50

I can see where he's coming from in a way.

There's a certain hypocrisy with those that shed tears about the Holocaust but would happily see Roma people banished from the UK, particularly if they were migrants from the EU.

Aren't we all a teensy weensy bit irritated, to say the least, with Travellers in the UK who often seem to be a law unto themselves with their illegal camps and not properly educating their children.

I think maybe Carr hit a raw nerve.

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 09:15:44

To be honest up until now I’ve always avoided him as I have never liked him, so I don’t really know what he has said in the past.
I always had an inkling that he was getting away with stuff because he is perceived as being clever.
There’s a lot of it about with those posh boys, eh Galaxy wink

nanaK54 Sun 06-Feb-22 09:10:50

Very well said FannyC I couldn't agree more

Galaxy Sun 06-Feb-22 09:10:27

Carr has been telling jokes about raping women for years, if I remember rightly there were a few about murdering women as well. I am not sure how anyone is surprised by this. Hes shown who he is for years.

The Roma are the most persecuted people on Earth.
They had to travel as they were driven out.
I feel more than ‘outraged’ Baggs. It’s ridiculous to say that he is ‘raising awareness’.
He said that their death at the hands of the Nazis was ‘a positive’ of The Holocaust.
That is literally what he said.

I’m totally with you FannyC

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 08:58:02

Perhaps this man from an Irish Traveller family could have a word with Carr?
Perhaps he isn’t educated enough either to ‘get it’

(A joke. Sort of)

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 08:46:21

I wrote a dissertation about the Roma and the historical reasons behind their educational underachievement.
I don’t think that my knowledge is at fault here either.
I think that I could teach Carr a thing or two.
He’s just an arrogant posh boy being a racist bastard.

JaneJudge Sun 06-Feb-22 08:43:44

It wasn't even humour, it was plain prejudiced and nasty angry

Smileless2012 Sun 06-Feb-22 08:43:42

You need a certain level of education to appreciate his humour well on this occasion I'll be happy to regard myself as uneducated.

Galaxy Sun 06-Feb-22 08:43:39

Hes not raising awareness that's his get out of jail free card bless him. I dont think he should be banned though, I don't trust anyone to make that judgement.

Doodledog Sun 06-Feb-22 08:41:45

I don’t think it’s a lack of education that stops me from appreciating that ‘joke’.

Baggs

Could it be taken as a way of raising awareness of prejudice against Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller people? Having read his trigger warning before the show, I suspect that might have been his intention.

I agree what he said was shocking but that, surely, is the point – get it out there; make people think about this.

I'm not sure hating him and wishing him ill is any better than the hate he's accused of. Yes, be outraged, but focus the outrage on how GRT people are often portrayed. Before farming began we were all travellers, roamers, shifting hunter-gatherers.

Yes that is exactly what “dark humour” is supposed to do, but I honestly think that regardless of what he says it isn’t educational. You need a certain level of education to appreciate his humour.

Good point Allsorts
He’s certainly inciting hate in me angry

Whitewavemark2 Sun 06-Feb-22 08:13:51

I simply don’t and have never appreciated so called “dark humour”.

He gives me the creeps.

Allsorts Sun 06-Feb-22 08:09:02

Dreadful man, he’s always been nasty. Surely there must be a law about inciting hate somewhere, that could prevent him spouting this. What sort of audience goes to see such a man?

Peartree Sun 06-Feb-22 08:03:37

I heard want he said and what stuck out to me was when he said holocaust the audience started laughing even before he told his "Joke" why was that funny. Awful man awful audience.

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 07:49:33

He would have done better if he had tried to defend himself by claiming that his ‘joke’ demonstrated how widespread and still tolerated anti-GRT prejudice really is.

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 07:37:07

I’ve been to loads of comedy clubs, especially due to a sort of friend who is now famous, being the compère.
I have never heard anything so disgusting.
He seems to think that it’s acceptable because he is high-minded.
If Jim Davidson had said it, well, can you imagine
