They are hoovering all the big names and excellent journalists. It will hopefully make excellent listening.

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 13:35:26

To be honest, I used to prefer it a few years ago.

They constantly talk about the same things now.

In fact I often have to have a break from it because it’s too depressing.

There used to be light and shade.
O’Brien’s opening song used to be ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ and that’s what it was like:
All life is here.

I still like it; but it’s not the same channel.

But I know that I’m unusual in that I listen to the radio all day and night.

And for the love of all that’s holy:
Get Shut of Steve Allen!!!

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 13:37:17

Forgive my syntax - I’m on a lot of painkillers!

Riverwalk Wed 23-Feb-22 13:48:03

Fanny Steve Allen is on LBC London, along with the likes of Nick Ferrari, etc. Lots of phone-ins.

Then there is LBC News which is 24-hour rolling news.

Both broadcast nationally.

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 13:56:44

I know. I’ve been listening to it daily for 15 years.
I occasionally tune into LBC news because I have a soft spot for Ian Payne

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 14:01:30

And there’s no such thing as LBC London.
It’s stood for ‘Leading Britain’s Conversation’ for ages.
Sorry if I sound snippy!

Riverwalk Wed 23-Feb-22 14:02:37

Have you tried Times Radio?

I listen to that on/off for the morning news - interspersed with The Today programme on Radio 4.

Alexa is very useful for going between stations without too much effort if a particular item or presenter is getting on my nerves!

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 14:03:17

Emily Maitlis, Jon Soppell and Andrew Marr are going to LBC, not the news one.

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 14:05:07

Not really RW, but I ought to.
I’ve even started to go back to 5, as it’s a bit more cheery and I like Nicky Campbell and Adrian Chiles

Franbern Wed 23-Feb-22 16:41:18

Back in the 1990's I used to love Clive Bull's late night show. Would stay awake very late listening to it. And, he had different guests most nights answering all sorts of questions and some of them most wonderful querky callers. Nothing has every been anywhere near as good on LBC these days.

BlueBelle Wed 23-Feb-22 17:26:45

I listen to LBC all night (on and off) Nick Abbotts my favourite I do enjoy O Brian
But
I totally agree with fanny Steve Allen is awful I cannot stand him he loves himself, is totally vitriolic to the point that I don’t understand he’s never been sued He also gives out facts that just aren’t true he’s the most awful man with a sickly sweet exterior Ferrari is my next big dislike

welbeck Wed 23-Feb-22 17:36:12

i don't know what to make of steve allen.
i believe he has been warned several times over the years for things he has said on air.
he has a rather juvenile penchant for relating gruesome or very unpleasant things, often involving dead bodies, snakes, sharks, etc in the middle of the night.
he doesn't seem to care that people listening at that time may already have difficulty sleeping, or be ill, bereaved, depressed.
i like ian payne, he sounds o human, aware of his own frailties.
also clive bull has improved, used to be a bit sharp with callers, eg never answering when people start with, how are you. perhaps someone has told him that the callers do not have his ease and expertise with being on air, they are nervous.
i find james o'brien a bit long-winded. he needs to talk less.
overall, a good station.

BlueBelle Wed 23-Feb-22 18:33:00

Steve Allen is totally vitriolic and will completely decimate a character he doesn’t like, often women celebrities or anyone who is popular. He is like a viper with his words but covers it all over with a jolly, ‘it’s just a bit of fun’ sugary sweet style He constantly name drops but seems to have a very big following who love his sarcastic put downs Hateful man
IanPayne does seem quite normal and pleasant

TopsyIrene06 Wed 23-Feb-22 18:47:52

Bluebelle. So agree. How on earth Steve Allen is still broadcasting, I shall never understand.
Ian Payne doesn't like confrontation perhaps.
Eddie Mair is great and has such a sympathetic touch with an intelligent argument.
My all time favourite is Nick Abbot - what a wordsmith. His podcasts are hilarious.

BlueBelle Wed 23-Feb-22 19:03:16

I find Nick abbot so funny in a quirky way he’s my all time favourite
Doesn’t it surprise you how popular Steve Allen is though topsy does that say a lot about the country

vegansrock Wed 23-Feb-22 19:28:17

I like Eddie Mair best, I wonder who is going to get the push to make way for the newcomers.

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 19:36:28

Franbern the lovely Clive Bull is on from 1 -4am Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Or if you can Global Player, you can listen to the show on there.
I totally understand why you like him smile

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Feb-22 19:37:59

welbeck yes, Ian Payne is lovely. I actually have va bit of a crush on him! blush

grannyrebel7 Wed 23-Feb-22 20:04:49

I like Nick Abbot on a Saturdaynight, he's hilarious. Didn't know LBC used to stand for Leading Britain's Conservatives. Nick has a real go at Boris and his cronies. Don't know how he gets away with it!

BlueBelle Wed 23-Feb-22 20:18:56

Nicks on Friday Saturday and Sunday nights grannyrebel
It doesn’t stand for conservatives though you got that one wrong

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Feb-22 07:03:35

It originally stood for London Broadcasting Company.

Then it stood for London’s Biggest Conversation.

Then when it went nationwide - Leading Britain’s Conversation (a bit clumsy I always thought)

As BlueBelle rightly says, nowt to do with Conservatives!
Perhaps it was a typo

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Feb-22 07:04:35

vegansrock

I like Eddie Mair best, I wonder who is going to get the push to make way for the newcomers.

They will mainly do podcasts and ‘one show a week’ at the weekend I reckon

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Feb-22 07:05:30

And I don’t think that they will be around for long either

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Feb-22 07:26:34

I’m hoping that Andrews Castle and Pierce will be given the heave ho

FannyCornforth Fri 25-Feb-22 10:47:57

Andrew Marr is having Iain Dale’s 6pm slot.
