Having just watched three series of Succession which were great but very emotionally intense I was looking for something light and unchallenging to watch. I found this film which is based on a true story, starring the gorgeous Richard Gere who is completely upstaged by the Akita he finds and keeps, Hachi is shown at various stages of life from a puppy to an old dog. Yes it is a cheesy tear jerker but I loved it.

I second that! Lovely dog. Story transmuted from Japan to America though.

I watched it with my SIL and we were both crying at the end. Lovely film.

And based on a true story, too.

I absolutely loved that film too. What a gorgeous dog, and Richard Gere's not bad either.

I loved the film but I also thought it was a shame they couldn't have filmed the actual true story iykwim

Can I recommend a film with a dog in it (SPOILER) that doesn’t die?
It’s called ‘Ruth & Alex’ and stars Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman
It’s very enjoyable smile

I watched Ruth and Alex last Sunday. We both really liked it, so thank you Fanny! smile

I watched this determined not to cry, and bet my H I wouldn't.
I lost the bet

I love that there is a statue to Hatchi at the station.

Thank you for the recommendation. I watched Hatchi last night and had a good cry!

I'm glad you enjoyed it as well as the rest of us shysal
It's quite hard for directors to get the balance right between schmaltz and sincerity.

I like the look of Ruth and Alex. Is it only on Netflix ( which I don’t have)? I might try to get the dvd. I could listen to Morgan Freeman’s voice all day!

It’s on Amazon Prime.
It’s a lovely film MayBee

It was so refreshing to see a film about older people which was totally free of ageism and stereotypes
(and no one dies! Not even Dorothy the dogsmile)

This was one of my very favourite films.
