Rebel Wilson and the BAFTA's.

It may just be me but I thought Rebel Wilson's stint as BAFTA presenter was toe-curlingly embarrassing. Benedict Cumberbatch looked as if he could have cheerfully shoved her head first into the cake she was pestering him with and Lady Gaga and her boyfriend were not one bit impressed when Wilson presented him with a giant gold bra. Added to this her feeble attempts at 'jokes' about Andrew, Harry & Meghan (yawn) and sideswipes at others, including J.K. Rowling and she spoilt the whole event for me. I kept pausing the TV for a while then fast forwarding to avoid sitting through any more of her drivel.

Oh dear, now I have to ask who on earth is Joanna Scanlon?

You can see I’m not very impressed with celebrities grin

I didn't know she had been in a film but she was Ma Larkin in the the remake of The Darling Buds of May.

She seems unaffected and lovely.

Thank you Callistemon. I’m being educated tonight.

If you ever see any old Oscar ceremonies, I’m talking 1940’s/1950’s, the winner just accepted their award with a modest smile and a few gracious words of thanks.

Those were the days.

I haven’t watched it, but I saw a pic of Lady Gaga’s beautiful outfit. I love that necklace!

Nothing will beat Gwynnie Paltrow's tearful Oscar acceptance speech in 1999
Through a lot of shaking, the Oscar winner gasped between tears and thanked nearly everyone in her life, from friends and family to co-stars, famous friends, producers, directors, agents, a cousin who died when she was young, and too many more. Essentially, it was awkwardly long and teary, involving thanking many names people didn’t recognize as well as Weinstein.

i thought she was amazing in a star is born

Caught part of it, I too liked Joanna Scanlon.

I remember that speech. although I was mesmerised by her hair which had been styled in what I'd call an Adolf Hitler fashion, in that the front bit had been moulded and swept to one side in the way he was prone to wear his shock

Thankfully, I don't think she paid tribute to her vaginal steaming thingy though so that was a bit of a godsend blush no one really wants the sort of over sharing she's given the world lately.

I usually record these ceremonies and then can fast-forward all the boring bits. This time I sat through Rebel Wilson just to see whether she could be any more toe-curling than she started off. And she kept it up all the way through! Utter bilge. Her jokes fell flat and she just kept going. She was trying to be edgy like Gervais and it didn't work, she's just not funny.

Amongst the weirdly dressed and unattractive people on the stage suddenly appeared a vision of loveliness. A 55 year old lady called Salma Hayek announced an award. She was not only stunningly beautiful with a gorgeous figure but even had a fabulous purple dress which fitted her perfectly. She looked like old Hollywood glamour and outshone them all! Surrounded by cheap looking dresses, tattoos and Botox faces she looked a total vision.

I have no idea who she is either. At a guess, I thought she may be the daughter of one of the beach boys.

I accidentally saw some of this while I was doing something else. I take it that Rebel was the woman in the red dress who was reaching new levels of cringeworthiness. If that's not a word then it should be! I don't remember much of what I saw except for a few women with boobs leaping out of dresses. I switched over pretty quickly.

Selma Hayek is Hollywood royalty - an actress, producer and director. She was in ‘Ugly Betty’ if anyone remembers that show. An impressive figure! Rebel Wilson, meanwhile, is an Australian comedy actress - might have been in Bridesmaids or similar? When five stone heavier, frequently on Graham Norton show.....

@maddyone. I have to disagree with you in your comment that actors do absolutely unimportant jobs. I think we all realised during the last two years the power and joy that cinema, theatre and drama can give us, and how much we all missed theatre and similar events.
I agree that this year’s host was cringe worthy but have to admire all film productions with what they have achieved during the restrictions of Covid and am grateful that cinema has continued to touch, educate, entertain, and offer escape from the terrible times we live in.
I could go on to thank Tom Dick and Harry, but those thank you speeches were as usual mostly too long so won’t add to the tedium. Authors get prizes, why shouldn’t actors?

My claim to famesmile is that I know Joanna Scanlon's younger brother, he's a lovely chap. If you google her you can see she's been in loads of stuff from Doc Martin, The Other Boleyn Girl, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and The Larkins and masses of other TV appearances. She must be a good character actor as you remember the character not her.

I agree re Salma Chestnut. What a beautiful dress. I had a similar one back in the 70s when maxi dresses were fashionable for parties.

That's the key to being a good actor!

Who watches these types of programmes?

I watch it because my 12 year old autistic grandson's obsession is the cinema and has been for some years now. He is a mine of information on all things film related and if he asks me a question or wants to have a discussion he expects Granny to know.

I watch programmes like BAFTA because I enjoy them. I'm very interested in the entertainment world. It would be a dull place without it. I certainly wasn't keen on Rebel Wilson's presentation style though.

Ghastly litigious woman.Don't like admitting that she is Australian.
