Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

Funnily enough, I loved Mum and I’m not keen on Sean Bean / find him quite unattractive.

Good job we’re all different!

I agree

People these days are used to their "dramas" being full of action, sex, slick characters, multiple storylines, violence, and ....Drama!! The whole point of Marriage, is the NORMALITY of married life at around 30 years and more! It is a hard job for an actor, to portray the mundane!! I am enjoying its simplicity!

That's exactly what The Daily Mail said in its article about this dire offering.

This is deadly. If my marriage was a smidgeon like this I'd have left.

I'm sticking with it just to sew if something exciting happened. But I'm doubting it . Simplicity can be great but mind numbing, not so .

I hate the music at the start and end, but am enjoying the slow unspoken and sometimes awkward pace which is, so often, like real life.

Ampersand Wed 17-Aug-22 11:55:05

Didn't enjoy episode 1 of Marriage at all - stuck it out for 30 minutes and then switched off - soooooo boring

susytish Wed 17-Aug-22 11:56:58

Yes he can help me with dishwasher or anything he likes for that matter!
Love Sean Bean, how can you not like him? Looking a bit older now, but still lovely!
I didn't realise it was written by guy who wrote Mum, which I found too slow, but that didn't have Sean Bean in it! Will carry on watching.

susytish Wed 17-Aug-22 11:58:15

BTW I agree the music is awful begining and end.

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 11:58:20

Well my marriage is like this. Lots of long periods of silence because we’ve nothing to say, or we’ve said it all 1000 x before.
But we’re comfortable.
People who still want to live life in the fast lane after 30 years of marriage are sometimes the ones who are bored stiff with each other. so feel they have to over compensate.

The couple in this program actually seem quite happy together, despite trauma in their past.

Maggiemaybe Wed 17-Aug-22 12:00:41

I’m still intrigued by it. It’s not supposed to be showing us what an average marriage is, it’s about this particular couple’s relationship, depressing and dysfunctional though it is. As for the acting, it’s really not easy to depict the everyday and mundane, and I think the actors are doing a great job. I’ve seen 3 episodes now and am looking forward to watching the last one.

Kate1949 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:02:29

I agree Kandinsky. I think the writers have it spot in. Having rows about things like jacket potatoes is the norm in this house!

Maggiemaybe Wed 17-Aug-22 12:02:53

My post above wasn’t in answer to yours, Kandinsky, rather to those saying the average marriage is nothing like this.

Kate1949 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:03:02

spot on not in.

grannyrebel7 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:04:09

Yes it was soooo slow. And the tension was awful. It was like they didn't really know each other even though they'd been married for 27 years. The fake laughing got to me as well and that music. What was that all about?

pandapatch Wed 17-Aug-22 12:06:40

My husband has abandoned it and I can see why, but for some reason I feel compelled to keep going, it is kind of mesmerising. Sean Bean's character is creepy and I also hate that "music"

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 12:09:23

Exactly * Kate1949* - our ‘exciting’ conversations are about which colour bin goes out on alternate Mondays ( & I’m not joking)

Nicolenet Wed 17-Aug-22 12:10:40

Bad acting, story has no depth. Why do I bother?

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:10:50

Oh God, if my marriage was remotely like this I would have walked years ago.
I know it becomes mundane, but they are so false and awkward with each other, it makes me sad, everything about it is sad.
I will continue to watch to the end, because there are obviously things to learn, but there is not one character I feel any affection for.

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:12:20

Panda patch
Same here, I’m strangely compelled to keep viewing

WendyD Wed 17-Aug-22 12:15:25

I found nothing in the first episode to entice me to continue the series. I am so sad because Nicola Walker has been in several series about marriage and families that have been tremendous, but in this she has been neutered and I can't understand a word Sean Bean says. Forgettable.

PollyDolly Wed 17-Aug-22 12:17:23

Sorry, I don't agree, I think there is a depth developing. Ive watch 2 episodes on demand and we had a long chat about it last evening - both agree that the characters are developing and some true colours beginning to reveal - don't like the daughters boyfriend, very coercive and manipulative man.
There's a great deal of relevance to the series I think

Otis Wed 17-Aug-22 12:29:38

I thought it was boring and very unrealistic to a marriage situation. Shan't be watching any more of it.

LilyoftheValley Wed 17-Aug-22 12:31:45

slow moving and dull. disappointed for Nicola Walker. Sean Bean was mumbling along, Highly over rated actor. His jaws whilst eating w ere so mobile that I thought they might unhinge!! . yucky!!

esgt1967 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:32:10

I really didn't enjoy The Marriage and my husband absolutely HATED the music! I usually like Sean Bean and Nicola Walker is usually fairly good in her roles (although always a bit one-dimensional/talks the same way) but this "drama" was awful. I don't need to see how boring marriage can be, I experience that every day! Seriously though, couldn't see the point of the whole thing, no real plot and the continuity/scene changes were dreadful.

Yogamum Wed 17-Aug-22 12:37:38

Not for me, sorry. I’m forced to watch it as my DH loved it. The theme tune (if could call it a tune) hurts me ears. I keep waiting for it to get interesting

Kate1949 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:38:03

Oh yes bin day is exciting around here Kandinsky. We don't actually argue much but the other day we had a heated debate about the food bin!

HannahLoisLuke Wed 17-Aug-22 12:39:27

Not planning to watch. From what I’ve read it’s all about the bickering. Don’t need that.
