Which series do you binge watch for comfort ?

Just realised that this week I have watched all the episodes of Dinnerladies again. Somehow I find it comforting and love watching Victoria Wood as Brenda with Julie Walters as her mum. It's not challenging and has a feel good message.
Wondered whether anyone else has a go to tv or film series when you feel a bit low ?

Redhead56
I’m on my 3rd time of watching the series and I still cry when David sings Your Simply the Best to Patrick ?

I love Schitts Creek too and could watch it for ever.
And Mrs Brown always makes me laugh.

NCIS. The whole series from the start is being shown on 5. About half way through now. It’s hilarious/tongue in cheek apart from the extreme overuse of firearms. Shoot first, ask later. (Typical US)

Another Dinner ladies here.
I have to find other programs though, because I dont want to 'wear it out' so to speak.
So, Motherland next.
Maybe Green Wing if I feel like getting the CD out.

Doc Martin. Lovely scenery, sunshine. Cheers me up and reminds me of when we watched them filming it whilst on holiday in Port Isaac. I'm sure life must be like that somewhere!

The same for me too smile I love it.

Agree that Virgin River is like a cosy comfort blanket (4 seasons so far).
The most gorgeous feel good series of all time is A Place to Call Home and there are 67 episodes to indulge in.
I bought Upstairs, Downstairs on DVD (68 episodes) and that is just wonderful. I think it might also be on catchup somewhere.
I might return to Downton Abbey at some point but not yet as it's still too fresh in my mind.

I always put Two Doors Down on when I’m busy and on my own in the house. I love hearing them and I know it word for word. Feel like I have company.

My go-to feel good programme is "A Place in the Sun."
I have it on series record. Fast forward through the adverts and it's 40 minutes of escapism, and debate if my husband's in the room.
We'll probably never buy abroad but it's fun discussing it! ?

Just finished Everwood (on ITV hub)- feel quite bereft now!

Another vote for Virgin River here. I'm thinking of joining a U3A knitting group just because they meet in a pub! Maybe I'm expecting too much?? grin

Grantchester.
Any drama that clashes with another one.
I've just started Nine Perfect Strangers.

Comfort only?

Foyles War. The sheer decency of the man is comforting.
Some Agatha Christie stuff.
Light weight detective stuff
Death in Paradise (sun, sea, solved)
USA stuff...West Wing (when politicians cared) ditto "Law and Order"
Scenic Railways (scenery I'll never see in my life)

And blasts from the past Black Adder, and Yes Minister, and sometimes Red Dwarf, takes me back to when DS a teenager and we all enjoyed together.

I love the sci-fi series 'Stargate SG-1' and most of the follow-ons, but I'm not keen on the 'Ori' ones.
They bring back happy memories for me!

And another vote for virgin river love it. Also This is us.

Ran through New Tricks then Death in Paradise, plan on starting Murdock Mysteries from series one next week. Just don't find modern/recent cop dramas watchable

Last thing I binge watched on Netflix was ‘Queen’s Gambit’ which I found very good. Binge watching doesn’t appeal to me much as I find so many so called ‘addictive’ series uninteresting and wearying! I started watching ‘Irma Vep’ expecting something pretty good and vampiric ( I love vampires!) but it was deadly dull with thoroughly dislikable characters. (I just wished good old Bela Lugosi could have flapped up and made off with the lot of them!). I am going to watch ‘Empress’ on Netflix one weekend and hope it will be good as the subject ( Elizabeth of Austria, ‘Sisi’) is a historical personage who has always fascinated me. I hope I will be in for a good old binge when I get round to it!

When I read the title I mused on ‘for comfort’, and what have I been binge watching recently……….Spooks and Silent Witness. Should I start worrying?

Soniah Sun 30-Oct-22 11:36:28

I find it hard to make time for the new stuff I want to watch so never rewatch things but I know they're always somewhere if I want them, actually I lie, I did watch Black Books twice

Theoddbird Sun 30-Oct-22 11:36:48

The only series I have ever 'binged watched' is Downton Abbey. I watched it during the first lockdown. Thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't understand why I hadn't watched it when originally on tv. I have seen both the films as well smile

Another vote for Virgin River and A Place To Call Home. Both excellent. 5 Bedrooms a series set in Australia is well worth a watch too.

Alioop Sun 30-Oct-22 11:42:21

I've the box set of Dinnerladies and put it on every so often, I love it. I also have The Vicar of Dibley that I sit and have a chuckle at. Gavin and Stacey and Not Going Out are fab too.

Done an awful lot of 'comfort watching' lately since DH passed away. Favourites are Ever Decreasing Circles, Dinner Ladies, Waiting for God, As Time Goes By, Friends, basically anything without violence, swearing, or mysterious happenings.
