Doc Martin - Final Ever Episode

Not just you LR, I feel exactly the same. Very odd & disappointing final episode. I could not believe the sky lanterns at the end. They are lethal & should be banned.

I think the message was that he was letting his unmotherly mother go with the lantern, and then it came back and set fire to the tree in a sort of revenge. Idea OK but using a magic lantern? Definitely not. They are dangerous and this could, encourage others to use them. Very irresponsible and not what a doctor and his socially aware wife should do.

I thought the snow scene dragged on a bit and suddenly this guy at death’s door is remarkably well enough to put his santa outfit on?

Including the horrid sky lanterns bit , the writers deliberately made the last episode almost unwatchable so as to kill off any possibility of a future return to Port Wen

Haven’t watched it yet, perhaps I won’t bother.

I thought this final episode was ridiculous. I pitied the poor actors having to deliver those daft story lines.

Definitely not up to the usual standard of this show. I watched it but was disappointed just a host of clichéd situations thrown together.

I watched it and agree with 25Avalon's résumé that the Doc's letting go of the lantern was to release him from his mother's unmotherly clutches. I assumed she was the Ghost of Christmas Past in the car. She came back to haunt him, he could never really be free of her, but as a positive, he saw new sense over loving his own family more.

Actually Cornwall Council banned sky lanterns a few years back. A lot of Devon and Cornish towns have lantern parades, but farmers were concerned about livestock and the countryside, and they successfully campaigned to get them banned. We have a tar barrels parade here which is potentially far more dangerous but has never been banned.

It wasn't actually the final episode in terms of filming. We were down there at the beginning of March (chatted with Martin Clunes about our puppy), and we were told that the previous week they had had all the Christmas trees and decorations up to film the Christmas special. They then went back to filming the final series.

What on earth are sky lanterns ? Never heard of them. With all the bushfires we get I am sure they wouldn’t let you have them here. We are not allowed to buy fireworks ,either . Only councils can run fireworks displays. I used to think this was a bit extreme but having seen the effects of bushfires in our family I firmly agree. My daughter and fam lost everything except their car and the clothes they were wearing - their home and contents were razed to the ground in 2009.

I agree with everyone. It was a dreadful episode and very disappointing. I hated the drive through the snow and having to get out of the car in sub-zero temperatures. My worst nightmare. I just fast-forwarded the whole of the snow episode. Then the lantern scene was nonsense, I would hope they had more sense. I just give up. What an awful way to end such a wonderful series.

I think they should have had everyone singing the Cornish version of While Shepherds Watched. You wouldn't normally get through Christmas in Cornwall without hearing it and it's not as if they're short of choirs to sing it.

It was rather disappointing. Some happy endings, but not great. I did love the bit where Martin zooms in on the sleigh, though!

If you can find it, there was a whole programme on Thursday evening about how the series was made. Martin Clunes' wife is the director, and they have an amazing work relationship. In fact the whole cast and crew seem to get along very well, it's a bit like a holiday for them! The explanations about getting the light at different times if the day while filming are interesting, and the programme touches on the tiny bit of hostility from a couple of the residents. However, the wealth the series has brought too the village is phenomenal.

PS look out for the mention of Martin and dogs. That's me in my earlier comment! 🐕

Disappointed like many of you with the final episode (and overly long) but I enjoyed the programme about the making of Doc Martin much more.
The Doc’s House became uninhabitable for the owners due to the tourist frenzy - people looking through their windows day after day all summer - has been For Sale for a long time and has just gone Under Offer now the filming has ended I suspect.
It is just under a million pounds and has 2 bedrooms.
Such is the power of the programme worldwide.

So disappointed in the the last episode, so much was wrong with it. Would have been much better if they had stopped at the last one of the final series which to me was a happier, more well rounded ending to a long running, successful series. I caught up with the programme about the making of Doc Martin yesterday and enjoyed that far more.
