Kate1949 Wed 28-Dec-22 22:20:31

I thought it was excellent.

Fantastic writing and acting. Was so impressed that I have already watched the second part on IPlayer. It deserves to win awards.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 09:18:23

I haven't seen the second one yet so I'm going to avoid reading this thread till after I have, in case there are spoilers! Although I think we all know how it ends for Tully...

FlexibleFriend Thu 29-Dec-22 11:14:39

Absolutely brilliant and had me crying my eyes out.

Pittcity Thu 29-Dec-22 16:49:08

I didn't enjoy it and turned off half way through the first episode.

Grannynannywanny Thu 29-Dec-22 20:04:15

That was gut wrenching.

volver Thu 29-Dec-22 22:06:34

Well that's wrung me out. 💔

Fantastic acting from the three main characters. It was not an easy watch but very powerful and thought provoking putting forward both sides of opinion on euthanasia. It is a performance that will stay with me. You could tell it was based on the real close experience of the writer, it rang so true, not overstated or mawkish.

HousePlantQueen Thu 29-Dec-22 22:34:46

Excellent writing and acting. Not mawkish despite the subject matter. Brilliant piece of TV

Tears flowed here. I couldn’t look away.

nanaK54 Thu 29-Dec-22 22:53:46

Will stay with me for a long time

Wonderful television

I was oddly unmoved by it.
Unlike the Terry Pratchett documentary several years ago about Peter Smedley which I kept thinking about.

Great acting though and will no doubt receive many nominations and awards.

I have been known to cry at adverts but strangely didn't find myself tearful at this, not sure why. It was very well scripted and acted, though.

I read the reviews so I’ve an idea of the content. Too close to home for me

Auntieflo Fri 30-Dec-22 09:53:10

I thought it was wonderful, well acted, thoughtful and sympathetic.
Just wondered how many people , with terminal diagnoses have had similar thoughts about places like Dignitas?

I did see/ read? an article about Dignitas, some long time ago, and that it was a unit on an industrial site, not like the attractive one portrayed in 'Mayflies'.

Yes, I read that too.
The one criticism I have of the drama is that my Dad died of oesophageal cancer and would not have been able to kick a football around like a fit man. One minute Tully was really ill, the next it seemed there was nothing wrong.

JaneJudge Fri 30-Dec-22 11:00:34

I thought it was really good too and watched both in one go. I don't understand why his wife had left it so late to have a baby though grin

JaneJudge Fri 30-Dec-22 11:01:12

sparklefizz, steroids maybe in the early stages of treatment?

volver Fri 30-Dec-22 11:10:48

Because they had only just got married?

I thought it was madness to talk about moving house, but she was in denial.

Grannynannywanny Fri 30-Dec-22 11:45:39

I thought Ashley Jensen’s acting was superb.

Alioop Fri 30-Dec-22 12:42:48

Wow, just finished watching the second episode of Mayflies and I'm sobbing. What a great, close friendship they had from their teens, it was so well written and acted.
It's made me think of my friend who has terminal breast cancer and our escapades in the 1980s when we were in our late teens, early twenties. What a wonderful time we had, the memories will be with me forever.

Fleurpepper Fri 30-Dec-22 20:01:28

Yes, very moving.

Dignitas is by the way not the only Charity organisation that organise assisted suicide in Switzerland.

What was not discussed, and should have been- is that his wife and two friends accompanying him would probably be later arrested for assisting someone seeking assisted dying- as several spouses have in past few years. None of them were actually charged in the end. but the stress caused and accusations, were huge. Many people in the past had to go alone, for fear of their spouse, close relative or friend being arrested and accused.

The other one not really discussed, but only touched upon- is that people seeking an assisted death have to do so far too early often- for fear they will not be fit enough to cope with the travel, or lose the ability to take the potion themselves, or not be compos mentis enough to demonstrate that NO coercion was exercised, and that they clearly understand the definite nature of the act on the day.

It is time the Law was changed in the UK, so that people can choose to die at home, and not have to travel abroad to do so (and have the means to do that).

Fleurpepper Fri 30-Dec-22 20:14:32

Sarah tells how it is- she risked prosecution to help her husband and she is fighting for the right of all to so in the UK- not in Switzerland. A very brave woman who truly loved her husband enough to want to support him all the way
