New Year TV.

Join the club! I've never seen such an abysmal choice of tv programmes in my whole life. We don't have Netflix either, just Freeview; I have some box sets (The West Wing) still to watch in an emergency and I can download a lot of free films on my iPad via Freevee. I really resent the TV licence fee these days and the sooner the government does something about it the better.

I love Miss Marple! She has to be played by Joan Hickson though. I've watched them all too. Currently I am Spartacus until my guests arrive. 😂

Agree - awful selection over Christmas and New Year. However, spent hours yesterday watching some interesting programmes on 5 Select though (on the free channels).

Saw a programme on Pompei (Bettany Hughes), then some Dan Snow documentaries about Tutenkhamun (sp?)

I'll definitely watch Happy Valley, the trouble is the last one was 7 years ago, quite a long lapse so there's much I'll have forgotten, I guess it'll come back though!

Other than that I see there is a biopic of John Stonehouse, anyone remember him? Labour minister who disappeared on a beach in Australia back in the seventies thought to have drowned. Real life husband and wife Matthew McFadden and Keeley Hawes are cast as John Stonehouse and his wronged wife.

I did read in the Sunday Times Culture magazine that Helena Bonham Carter is also doing a biopic of Noelle Gordon of Crossroads fame, how bizarre! that's being shown in February.

I'v just started watching "A Spy Among Friends" about Kim Philby played excellently by Guy Pierce he's come a long way since Ramsay Street! Damien Lewis and Anna Maxwell Martin also both very good in it, so will continue with that.

TV for me has been dire. I did notice one programme on BBC1 shown 3 times over a week! I have not lost all of my marbles.

To show Eric and Ernie's 1976 programme was a disgrace.

Knowing Happy Valley was returning, I reminded myself of what had gone on before by watching Series 1 and 2 on i-player. I remembered getting very frustrated by Sarah Lancashire's dialogue last time - she either spoke very quickly, or muttered, and I couldn't make out what she was saying. This time, I watched with subtitles on and absolutely loved it. I can hardly wait to watch it again.

Other than that, me and other half have been watching previously recorded programmes, some quizzes, and old favourites like Corrie. Not much else on, really.

Me too for the Joan Hickson Miss Marple programmes. I’ve watched them all and I wish more were on. Cleopatra is on currently which I’m watching and a few more good films on later I think. Will also be watching good old Call the Midwife.

The best thing I've watched is Sam Ryder Rocks New Year's Eve. Wow. Sam is incredible. Just my opinion of course

We watched him, & then saw the Big Ben ringing at Midnight, & the fireworks to celebrate the new year, welcoming 2023.

Most times I don’t even go to terrestrial tv. Just go to Prime, Netflix, Disney + where I go to National Geographic, my favourite.

Can't wait for Happy Valley as it's filmed in my home town. Its been great to watch the filming and see our lovely scenery.

I agree extremely poor on all main channels unless you like old films. I don't want to watch all that roman fighting nonsense or Spiderman.

I've watched the Christmas sewing bee and the Radio 2 piano room.

We watched 1883 ,the prequel to Yellowstone and it was brilliant .Would recommend it to anyone interested in a different take on cowboys and indians or wagon trains across America.
A terrific cast ,some great acting and a one to watch in Isobel May who plays Elsa she must have a great career ahead of her after this .We watched the programme about making it AFTER we watched the final episode and it was very interesting to see the creator's take on it .Well worth a watch.
Now we're watching the next stage in 1923 ,with Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren looks promising .

I’ve just watched Downton Abbey (The New Era) on Sky, perfect for a wet afternoon.
MrOops is now watching Bangers and Cash so he’s happy.
We watched a limited series called The Flatshare, last night which was very good (and coincidentally has the Lady Sybil actress from Downton Abbey in it) Channel 4 extra.
Also we've recorded the Big Fat Quiz show, we even got some of the answers!
We are happy with this years TV, but watched nothing from the BBC.

My DH loves Bangers and Cash. I think he has watched every one.

I get the Radio Times delivered and I search the Freeview channels every day. There is actually a lot of choice on them if you care to look, and I'm very picky. I record everything and definitely have too much to watch and can't keep up. I have access to Netflix but rarely watch it.

Definitely! I now have a hearing aid connected to the TV which is wonderful, but I remember not being able to follow the dialogue at all and had to use sub titles. As you say, she spoke very fast and also mumbled. Such a shame as she's brilliant at portraying the role.

I agree Smudgie abysmal indeed. I'm watching repeats of Gavin & Stacey today. In fact we turned the TV off a lot of the time and read our Christmas books, seem to have got through them quickly.
I'm looking forward to Happy Valley as well.

Me too. It’s given me a few chuckles. I haven’t watched it since the days of Anne Robinson.

I've rewatched Happy Valley on iPlayer too. I'm also watching Servant of the People on All4 which is funny but poignant. The terrestrial catch up apps are pretty good.
There were several programmes on recently that I've given a go but given up.
I'd recommend Detectorists as the best Christmas special. I also enjoyed The Cleaner and may watch the other episodes.
