Anyone watching? Very grim, but compelling as always. Last ever series too.

Interesting point silverlining48.
But of course, people have commented on several women's looks on Gransnet recently (and not all comments are positive).

I'm not watching this at present - saving it for a rainy day.

However I do see the trailers and can't help wondering whether a programme has ever had a more ironic title? Doesn't look at all happy to me!

Ohmother Mon 23-Jan-23 07:35:52

Yep. The not phoning the school to check was a basic mistake for Sarah I’m afraid. Still loving this fantastic series though!

Why did the policeman not just test the weight and ask to see inside it?

I thought there were other bags or cases stored there, and he probably assumed that was where they were kept.

Never mind Tommy in his Lycra, I was more impressed with his fitness levels! The way he leapt up and out of the dock, after decking the guard, racing out of the building shouting ‘Police!’ (I think), then sprinting down numerous streets before dashing into shop, stripping off and pedalling away.

Could have given Usain Bolt a run for his money.

🏃‍♂️🚴‍♂️

And could Tommy really have escaped from all the guards and various officials in the court?

I agree is was a spectacular escape but it is possible
A convicted sexual predator and child abuser escaped from his trial a few years back at our local city and was on the run for about a year or more (he’s back inside now ) He didn’t do the violent exciting escape that Happy Valley showed but he did managed to slip out quietly during the lunch break and disappear and was found eventually after a lot of searching in a Eastern European country …now behind bars again

Chestnut

The comments here are reminding me of the two randy old ladies played by Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke.

This comment made me snort my morning coffee through my nose grin

What I realised after the latest episode was, neither Ryan or the James Norton character, Tommy, spoke a word. Being the saddo I am I plated the episode back to check I was right and they are silent. Lots of very meaningful looks at folk though. Two more episodes!

I enjoy this series so much that I do my best to overlook things that don't seem very plausible. As Chestnut just mentioned, surely Catherine would have checked with the school? And could Tommy really have escaped from all the guards and various officials in the court?

But it is riveting - perhaps because all the performances are so convincing.

Why did he want his son there? Was it just showing off or was there some other motive?

Chestnut Sun 22-Jan-23 23:51:00

I know Catherine tried to get added security for Tommy because she knew he would try and escape, so that whole scenario was out of her control. But I still think she dropped the ball big time. She knew perfectly well that Ryan wanted to go to the hearing yet she didn't phone the school to see if he was there!

We used to have suitcases just like that.

James Norton looked even better in lycra than I thought he would. blush

So did we! One went to the charity shop, full of clothes. Hope that one wasn't ours. 😲

Sarah deserves a medal, brilliant acting but I was so stressed watching tonight's episode , I was nearly hiding behind the settee. The violent scenes had me muting the TVs and not looking at the screen until I thought it had scene had passed.. Goodness knows what I've missed. I was in tears though watching Paddington crying in prison so I'm not good watching violent or very sad scenes.
I like James is very good looking, don't like long scruffy hair on anyone.so pleased he's tidied up, looked particularly good in riding gear.

Glorianny

No it's Sally Wainwright- Last Tango in Halifax, Gentleman Jack. Possibly the best TV script writer around.

OMG it just gets better. Agree about the cycling gear.

Yes, I wondered if she’d written them as books first though.

silverlining48 Sun 22-Jan-23 22:35:53

Want to call out the comments about the attractiveness of actor playing Royce.
If it’s inappropriate for a group of men to speak about a young woman in this way ....I assume you are joking about, but just saying ladies.
As to Happy Valley, it’s brilliant.

Is this based on books, does anyone know?

Iam64 Sun 22-Jan-23 22:04:31

Calendargirl Sun 22-Jan-23 22:04:07

My ‘oh wow’ a couple of comments ago was meant for tonight’s episode, not the picture of his long hair.

MawtheMerrier Sun 22-Jan-23 22:03:30
