Watched it earlier in the year but didn't really enjoy it

Must admit I don't understand why there is still so much made of the annual self congratulatory pantomime that is the Oscars. The world of entertainment no longer hangs on every breath in Hollywood. Surely?

I have only seen trailers for it and decided it wasn’t for me..

I too have watched a quarter and gave up. Too confusing for me. I expect a sci-fi, kungfu fan would love it.
Are the awards just being politically correct?

Interesting comments here, I must admit I'd never heard of it and thought perhaps it was a film yet to be released over here. Seems not, already available on Prime. I was having a discussion with my son about films when he phoned me yesterday and we both agreed that these awards are becoming self congratulatory slap on the back fests often bestowing accolades on little known films, that don't appeal to a wider audience. As a young person and more of a cinema goer than me, he said the film that everyone loved last year and made a fortune at the box office was the Tom Cruise Top Gun follow up, I can't comment because I didn't see it. I did however go and see Elvis which I absolutely loved, but as I haven't seen any of the other nominees I have nothing to compare it with. My husband watched All Quiet On The Western Front and said it was quite brilliant but gory, I'll take his word for that. I would like to see The Banshees of Inisherin.

I am pleased that Ke Huy Quan won best supporting actor. I remember him as a child actor in Indiana Jones and also The Goonies.
I enjoyed Everything Everywhere All at Once. DH and I watched it one day last week. It is my kind of film. DH, on the other hand, was rather mystified.

I haven't seen this film but my husband watched it and said it was awful. We've watched The Banshees of Inisherin. A very strange film.

TBH, if a film wins Best Oscar, it often puts me off, thinking of The Favourite, never fancied it either. Not sure if it won Best Oscar though, I know Olivia Colman won Best Actress.

I watched it with ny daughyer. It wasn't until about half way through that I understood it. Then watched it again.

It is a brilliant movie.

I was listening to Times Radio in the car earlier and they were discussing films, they said, possibly tongue in cheek, Tom Cruise more or less saved the film industry single handedly last year, the problem being films are being made, and they might win loads of awards but they're a success at the Box Office.

The reason they are saying this is because here in the US, after Covid, most theaters are going bankrupt. Most movies have been released straight to streaming the last 2 years. Cruise delayed the film release by 2(?) years and insisted that it be released in theaters.

So yes he did get people back into theaters, but he wont save them. Theaters are now charging surge pricing for tickets at up to $20 per person for popular films. Tickets for 2 people, plus popcorn and drinks, is well over $100 now and that doesn't include dinner. My husband and I will wait for a few weeks for the movie to go to streaming and pay $30 and eat at home.

I haven't tried watching it but have seen several clips and don't fancy it at all. I'm not keen on the overuse of CGI which applies to most films these days.

I agree the Oscars and Baftas are just a back slapping exercise and seem so fake. The women are now very close to wearing nothing at all and going completely naked. They look cheap and revolting. Gone are the days of glamorous Hollywood.

Tried to watch this last night, over complicated by far.
If you don’t know what’s going on by half way through a film then what’s the point of a film.

My lovely Mum used to say 'don't touch Oscar winners with a bargepole. For the luvvies by the luvvies'. I don't know but I've certainly found a huge element of truth in this when listening to people who have followed the gongs (such as on here right now).

Cant agree that movies which won best film should be avoided when they include Gone with the Wind, Bridge on the River Kwai, Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, The Last Emperor, Dances with Wolves, The Godfather, Schindler's List etc.

We don't go to the cinema very often at all, and wait for most movies to stream on-line.

Of the best film category, we have watched Elvis and DH watched Top Gun, both of which we really enjoyed. We also have seen The Elephant Whisperers which which won best short documentary. I highly recommend it. Also The Sea Beast which was nominated for full length animated film. Enjoyed that one as well.

I do agree though that sometimes some very strange films are nominated, or sometimes acting roles that you wouldn't normally have chosen.

Mr P and I have just finished watching this. We stuck with it to the end but thought that it was repetitive and over complicated for what is basically a simple tale of love and reconciliation. It seems that to be lauded the modern film takes the beginning, middle and end of the story, chops it up in editing , joins the bits in random order, then presents that as the finished article. I felt the same way about Tar. Having said all that, I did admire the quality of the acting and the production. It is just that my brain hurts from trying to make sense of it all. I will have to watch a couple of old black and white movies to settle it down.
