Must admit anything that is hyped up by the media, telling us we should All should be watching and enjoying and having a party🙄 gives it a Big thumbs down from me👎👎 haven't watched it in years, but unfortunately you can't get away from the hype .

Callistemon21 Sun 14-May-23 09:51:29

It was on in the background but with lowish sound as we had visitors, some wanted to watch others didn't; some of it is so loud! But then Mae Muller came on and they had to turn up the sound to hear her. Did she forget to turn on her mike?

Didn't stay up for the results but I saw who won on FB this morning.

I thought the same about her microphone, it was a dreadful performance. I doubt whether her politics had anything to do with how the other countries voted. Poor song =poor score.

Younger DGD had been singing it earlier on and I asked if she liked the song. "No! Not at all" she said (but it must be catchy!). 😁

I was away all day yesterday and absolutely zonked when I got back - insane levels of traffic on the M1 and M6 - so after a brief dog toddle round the block I went to bed with the TV on. It was mostly missable and I fell asleep but woke up to “You’ll never walk alone” and simply sobbed my eyes out!
Just so moving.
Other than that, congratulations for an amazing production, almost matching the Olympic or Commonwealth Games opening ceremonies.
We may not be able to write and perform a winning song, but we absolutely know how to stage a spectacle!

Fleurpepper Sun 14-May-23 10:14:09

Who won?

We did last year (well, not quite winning but ...)

And yes, we do. I must have missed the best bit - You’ll never walk alone

Who won?

I can’t believe you have missed the News this morning?

Louella12 Sun 14-May-23 10:19:48

Politics is always floating in the background of Eurovision.

I didn't think her song was that bad. Certainly not second to last bad. I did think the vocals were muted.

These acts now get a lot of attention in Europe long before the competition. Sam Ryder was so likeable and he had accumulated a massive fan base over there
.
Maybe he could perform again another year.

Fleurpepper Sun 14-May-23 11:31:26

LOL, this could be said about almost every thread on GN.

Thanks Calli.

I liked it when young, and remember Sandy Shaw and I especially liked Dana. It’s meant to be rather kitsch isn’t it, and I think it’s mainly aimed at the young? I assume it was especially hyped this year because we were hosting for Ukraine, and it gave a big boost to Liverpool who really embraced it.

It’s always been quite political, especially voting, but never watch now so don’t know these days.

Callistemon21 Sun 14-May-23 11:46:34

Johnny Logan anyone?
Swoon 😁

MayBee70 Sun 14-May-23 12:05:32

It’s very much judged by the performance on the night. And people work very hard for months publicising their songs. The first two had had lots of hits on the internet. Sweden were favourites to win a long time ago. I try to find a big priced song to place, one that’s slipped under the radar and I thought I’d found that with Estonia but it slipped down the leaderboard after the people’s vote. Our song wasn’t bad enough to finish second to last even though the performance wasn’t that good. I usually ‘get’ the winning song even though it’s after the event eg the awful chicken song. But yesterdays winner was just generic Eurovision. And I kept thinking of ‘ Lost Hearts’ which gave me the creeps. Still think Norway had the best song and it’s the only one I will listen to again. Liverpool put on a great show but, music wise it was substandard imo

grannygranby Sun 14-May-23 14:30:21

whats with these nine-inch finger nails that winner and our hapless entry sported? Probably coming soon to my little town's three nail bars! yikes what does it signify? Its all so Drag and porn inspired. Altogether it was .. like fireworks constantly going off or eating a dustbin full of chocolates. Though I do like the numbers game at the end.
And the presenter with Graham Norton! he didn't look comfortable she dwarfed him. Bad optics and she over-acted. weird.
the commentary by Mel was warm, but the presentation by Catherine Tate assumed everyone in the world knew Grandma and Lauren...otherwise what on earth would the millions worldwide make of it? that she was drunk? All too excitable, all too much..
I liked Moldovia and Estonia...they were more like the traditional eurovision entries. kind of grown up and not of writhing women trapped in water or being crushed.
Some stay the Brit entry was too subtle...really? it was catchy. But I was no fan of hers as she trashed JK Rowling calling her a transphobe etc etc rubbish and was loudly trumpeting gender ideology...o well she certainly had the fingernails, so shed no tears.

Maggiemaybe Sun 14-May-23 15:07:35

If only Sam Ryder could have been our entry this year with Mountain - to my mind it was far and away the best performance of the evening. smile

grannysyb Sun 14-May-23 17:44:56

No, used to watch it when Terry Wogan was compering, his comments were hilarious! I think it's overhyped now.

Callistemon21 Sun 14-May-23 18:09:56

Terry just didn't take it seriously. His tongue-in-cheek remarks just made it 😁
Perhaps the problem now is that it takes itself too seriously

I do like Graham too but didn't hear most of the chit chat this year.

HeavenLeigh Sun 14-May-23 18:13:28

It’s a nay from us

62Granny Sun 14-May-23 18:19:46

Apparently Sweden won they were favourites, Finland came runner up, my DD who is a fan of the contest said she preferred the Finnish entry. All over for another year I wonder if we will ever hear of Mae Muller again or Sam Rhyder? Or will they enter the black hole or UK contestants.
