I enjoyed it last night and thought it is very promising some good actors in it Suran jones who never fails and Hugh Quashie (Rick Griffin out of holby ) Eva Best held my attention anyway and I didn’t nod off as I often do

I made myself watch the final episode. Complete load of trash.

Sago

I can tell you all fact is stranger than fiction.

My husband was reunited with his birth mother, I could write 3 seasons of drama all of it true but most of it unbelievable!

Oh, so true Sago.
I have a relation going through the "Your daddy ain't your daddy but your daddy don't know", right now.

I am enjoying it despite the ever gurning Suranne Jones. Her facial expressions do not alter whether she is playing doctor or barmaid! I can never watch her and forget she is acting - unlike Judi Dench or Hermione Norris.

Calendargirl Thu 25-May-23 11:05:43

Yes, Suranne (the name irritates me, neither one thing or another) Jones has always had the same constipated facial expressions, going back to her Karen McDonald days in Corrie.
I thought she was good in Gentleman Jack though.

The first episode was ok, but the last two were awful

Never mind the husband’s little mouth, I wouldn’t have fancied kissing the taxi driver’s bristly beard!

Still think how old Rosaline looked. She could have doubled as the mother.

I've watched all three episodes and I enjoyed it very much indeed. The sisters rivalry was so believable, and the acting amazing. I'm sorry it's finished now,

Buttonjugs Thu 25-May-23 11:45:31

I love it, on the second episode atm. Suranne has looked too thin for a long time now, I don’t think she looks unwell people always think that when someone loses weight it seems. It’s the first drama to keep me gripped since Line of Duty.

icanhandthemback Thu 25-May-23 11:47:30

I was disappointed in it to be honest. I thought it was a something or nothing storyline. It was a soap without excitement!

polly123 Thu 25-May-23 12:03:38

Sensitive writing and observation of character. Enjoyed it a lot.

Supergranuation Thu 25-May-23 12:05:57

I absolutely lived Gentleman Jack! I think Suranne Jones is a fantastic actress whose parts do not show off her true talent. Not sure about the eyebrows though, They seem to get longer with each episode grin I think she needs a new make up artist

No I didn't like it. It felt like one of those situations where a widow finds her dead husband had another family. In that situation I don't think there would be sympathy for the husband but rather for the deluded widow. The widower got no sympathy in this imo over emotional drama.

She was Rizzo, I ❤️ Stockard Channing
She was 33 when she played 17 year old Rizzo

FannyCornforth Thu 25-May-23 12:12:00

I’ve just googled the show (hadn’t heard about it until now, thanks), it’s directed by Sue Tully who was Michelle Fowler in Eastenders back in the day

IamMaz Thu 25-May-23 12:21:55

I’m currently watching episode 2 and am really enjoying it. I never watched Gentleman Jack - didn’t appeal to me. This has lots of twists and turns. I’m going to watch the last one today too!!!!

Oh that's a shame grin. I would have loved to hear your story if you had lived a life like that 😉

She was great as Rizzo, but was pretty hopeless in this, IMO.

(there are worse things I could doooo. . . 🎤)

I haven't yet watched it (on series link) but I have seen Suranne interviewed re her idea for the show which, she said, came to her one night, and which she developed from there.
I'm possibly wrong but I'm 'almost' convinced I've read a book very very similar (free Kindle download, hence no idea who by/title), whereby the mother died and had been leading a double life and the various twists it entailed
Has anyone else read it/similar ? Suzanne explained it as her original idea !

Milliedog Thu 25-May-23 12:44:04

No one could have paid me enough to watch Gentleman Jack, but I've watched all of Maryland and enjoyed it. Also enjoyed Ten Pound Poms.

Blackcat3 Thu 25-May-23 12:44:59

Great storyline, nice that it wasn’t dragged out.

specki4eyes Thu 25-May-23 12:48:00

Well, three precious hours of my life wasted watching that manic concoction of every clichéd life issue available.
Suicide/infidelity/drug abuse/marital discord/alzheimers/sibling rivalry/promiscuity/therapy etc etc...as if they'd all been drawn randomly from a hat! Followed by that annoying wokey rider at the end whispering to us that if we need any help with the issues....omg, which one to choose! Something there for everyone! And as for a taxi driver who gives free rides and takes his passengers wild swimming...oh please!
Utter garbage..
I sat through it all, hoping that some riveting insight would emerge...
Plot? Don't make me laugh!

grandma1949 Thu 25-May-23 12:53:12

Although I enjoyed episode 1, I am one of the people so disappointed to find it wasn't filmed on the Island. Although there were several arial views of Peel most were shot in Ireland. The Manx Government didn't offer the tax breaks available in Ireland. I was looking forward to seeing my childhood haunts.

Doodledog Thu 25-May-23 12:54:50

But other than that you loved it specki4eyes? grin

The plot was full of holes, but the questions about what you should and shouldn't keep secret, and the lines between secrecy and privacy were interesting, although they could have been handled a lot better, IMO.

sassysaysso Thu 25-May-23 12:57:00

Have watched the first episode and will continue with it mainly because we see so little of Eve Best on TV and she’s such a class actress.

missdeke Thu 25-May-23 13:02:45

I couldn't wait and went straight to itvx for the remaining episodes.

homefarm Thu 25-May-23 13:11:12

Yes watched it all on TV
Wouldn't bother to watch it again, disjointed and depressing.
