Am I being a bit slow but why is Phillip Schofield being thrown under the bus now? He came out about his sexuality , now revelations about an affair with consensual teenager that he covered up to protect identity , Maybe I'm being naïve but not sure why there has been such a big disconnect from TV at this point .

FannyCornforth Tue 30-May-23 13:38:03

Iris nothing at all to do with homophobia.
If a powerful man was suspected of grooming a teenage girl, the furore would be exactly the same, maybe even worse

Nick Ferrari, who often does the news review on This Morning and in my view talks a lot of sense, has always appeared via Zoom (or whatever). He has been going in to the studio live since Schofield has gone. Maybe coincidence or maybe not a Schofield fan.

I noticed that

Kim Woodburn (never one to hold back) has now waded in in her stilettos.

She’s branded Holly ‘a little b!tch’ who ‘aided and abetted’ Schofield (GB News)

Village gossips? Hanging judges? Shoot first and ask questions later? Definitely, they’re all on this thread and having a ball.

Look, it doesn’t matter what comes out in the future the point is that that you and others enjoying condemning him for all bar the kitchen sink don’t know right now what the truth is. Hold off until you do, or is it just too much fun?
I’d say that for any celeb/person in the street, not just Schofield. It’s the only fair thing to do.

I’m not usually a big tub thumper for LGBTQ issues, but I do wonder if homophobia may be playing a part in the vitriol being poured on PS. I wonder if the other party had been a young woman of 27 instead of a young man what the reaction would have been. After all, Boris Johnson dumped his wife and children for a woman 20 or more years his junior and there were few repercussions although he was Prime Minister of the country!

But the young man is 27 now . He was 10 when they first met.

No, I think that if a very young girl had been 'in contact' with a much older man who had gone on to have a 'relationship' with her under the nose of their collective employers, there would have been a very similar reaction.

This is not about homophobia, gossip or prurience, as is being suggested in an attempt to salvage PS's tattered reputation. I for one couldn't care less about his sexuality, or whether he was 'having an affair' whilst married (like Johnson), and I haven't seen much that suggests that others do either. I don't see this relationship as an affair, as that implies equality and a balance of power.

It is about safeguarding, and covering up corruption. And possibly more besides, but time will tell.

I'm just amazed that in this "woke" society we are enduring at the moment so much attention is being paid to this and why is Eamon whatshis name becoming so involved.

I had to Google. Oh, that Kim Woodburn. Looking back at previous interviews, she seems to have made a thing of just being rude. Ugh.

I imagine phrases like "aided and abetted" will be well scrutinised by Ms Willoughby's legal team.

Yes, I agree, Kim’s an odd one to say the least.
I was just reporting what she had said.
I think that she was treated badly on LW however

I think that the discussion of the McCanns on another thread was very much about people making holier-than-thou comments about how much better parents they were, and having 'fun' showing how much they condemned a couple whose daughter has been taken from them. In fact I think I used the term 'hanging judges' on that thread. I would agree that in that case people should hold their tongues until the truth is known, as absolutely nothing can be gained by speculation.

This, on the other hand, is ongoing, and one thing that we do know is that ITV failed to investigate when concerns were raised privately about the 'unwise relationship' between a very young runner at the bottom of the hierarchy and a much older man at the very top of it.

There is a lot of coverage now, and people are speaking up about it. There is something that can be gained in this case - if ITV take notice of the groundswell of public opinion and investigate properly, then process can be put in place to ensure that other young people are protected. That should have happened after Savile and Harris, but clearly it didn't, and it won't unless the hands of the people with the power are forced.

Er its absolutely fine to discuss the safeguarding implications around leaving young children alone.
If that picture is of the coming out interview, I thought both Eamonn and Ruth looked like they were in a hostage situation.

Amalegra Tue 30-May-23 14:40:24

So many different stories are circulating about this somewhat shabby affair. In the wake of the Savile scandal, everyone has to be VERY careful these days, including ITV bosses. If it was a young girl with whom Schofield had been involved and the ‘patriarchal’ power overtones that would imply, would there be more of a problem? There is actually no difference of course! We have yet to see the full story emerge, but I for one would not trust Scofield and his ‘truth’ as far as I could throw them! I have always thought of him as a self satisfied creep and a pretty poor ‘journalist’ (as he would have us believe!) to boot!

I think the same would be being said if a 10 year old girl had been groomed by an older man.

If, indeed, that is what happened, allegedly, with PS and a young boy.

Having read a bit more online about Mr McGreevy, is it just possible that he was using "contacts" as well?
As a teenager he was an athlete[competing in European Championships 2016 apparently] plus being an actor before he was 20.
Just musing. Could be wrong.

FannyCornforth Tue 30-May-23 14:59:02

I’m extremely surprised that the McCann thread wasn’t taken down.

I didn’t read it, so can’t comment on its contents, but as far as I’m aware MN take down McCann threads straight away

fancythat Tue 30-May-23 14:59:11

I dont want to lessen though what PS may be like and may have done.

Galaxy Tue 30-May-23 15:01:01

Rylan also on this morning is gay he had an affair last year no one gave two hoots, it's not homophobia.

Yes, giving comfort to a colleague who said he was gay and had been living a lie as a happily married man.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

FannyCornforth Tue 30-May-23 15:09:12

Calli I think that the insinuation is that Holmes was aware at the time about the scandal, and went along with the lies

FannyCornforth Tue 30-May-23 15:09:54

Schofield came out because of the scandal

LizzieDrip Tue 30-May-23 15:22:17

That means nothing really does it?Princess Diana was only 13 when she first met Charles … just saying! Not opinion - just fact. Not a fan of Schofield at all and, if it’s proven that something more sinister has occurred in his ‘relationship’ with this young man, then he deserves all he gets. But simply having met someone at a young age doesn’t necessarily equate to wrong-doing.
