Am I being a bit slow but why is Phillip Schofield being thrown under the bus now? He came out about his sexuality , now revelations about an affair with consensual teenager that he covered up to protect identity , Maybe I'm being naïve but not sure why there has been such a big disconnect from TV at this point .

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Jun-23 13:28:55

There is absolutely no way at all that ITV didn’t know about it years ago.

I have said that all along.

They are all as thick as thieves and desperately covering their backs.

I’m actually feeling a teeny bit of sympathy for Scofield here, as today they have wheeled him out to do their dirty business.

They should have dealt with it properly at the time.

I really dislike trial by media

All this speculation must be dreadful for all concerned.

If PS has acted illegally in anyway shape or form he should have his day in court.

Smileless2012 Fri 02-Jun-23 13:37:40

But with so much unfounded speculation, would he get a fair hearing GrannyGravy?

Anniebach Fri 02-Jun-23 13:39:03

Seems even Alison Hammond is a liar

One would hope so as and when all available evidence and statements under oath were presented.

Otherwise what is the point of our court and judiciary system as the media and social media platforms speculate about almost everything nowadays.

Trial by media is one of my biggest soap boxes. Panem et circenses.

However, I think Phillip Schofield is complicit in his own circus with this interview. As others have found in the fairly recent past, a boohoo interview has done him no favours with the public.

The young man’s name is Matthew McGreevy.

It’s all out there. Has been for years.

I’ve known all about it since Schofield was forced to come out.

It’s why Eamon and Ruth fell out with him.

Holly and the ITV bosses pretending that that they were ‘disappointed’ by ‘deceitful’ Schofield is pathetic and despicable.

Heads will roll and This Morning will probably be replaced by something else, like when The News of The World was ‘replaced’ by The Sun on Sunday

This is what I wrote five days ago.
And I stand by everything that I said then; and much of what I did say then has already been proven to be the case

Iam64 Fri 02-Jun-23 13:46:54

So far I’ve seen nothing that would take Schofield into a law court
Whether his actions were legal we don’t know, he says unwise but not illegal. I haven’t heard him clarify why he now believes it was unwise. It isn’t homophobic to find the way they met, subsequent sexual relationship and the way it ended, tawdry and exploitative.

Doodledog Fri 02-Jun-23 13:49:22

Does that really matter? The 'relationship' was on until the boy expressed his love for PS at the Awards ceremony and within days it was over. Is that not enough evidence that he was exploited? From being on the stage with the great and the good (who supposedly knew nothing about any of it) to moved on within days.

It strikes me as outrageous that people are defending this.

Anniebach Fri 02-Jun-23 13:49:36

Nothing illegal yet he has been compared with Saville on this thread

It isn’t going to end up in court. There is absolutely nothing to suggest it will.

Schofield brought about his own unpleasant downfall.

Doodledog Fri 02-Jun-23 13:51:28

And again - I don't judge him for having an 'affair', although I think that word dignifies what happened. I don't care that it was a gay 'relationship' either. That is Schofield's own business and if that were all it was should be allowed to stay private.

I am no fan of PS but the pile on by the media etc makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.

tidyskatemum Fri 02-Jun-23 13:51:59

Can someone explain why the BBC thinks this is so important that an interview with PS was the main item on the lunchtime news today? We switched off.

I don’t know who said that.
I definitely would not have, and neither would Doodledog who along with me is probably the most critical of Schofield on this thread

What has been compared to Savile is the cover up, the determination by fans that this couldn't have happened, and the collusion of the people at the top of the BBC (Savile) and ITV (Schofield) to protect their brand.

Because folk at the Beeb know that there is more to it.
Not that I agree that it should be so prominent - but it’s indicative that this is just scratching the surface.

I’m not going to comment now for a while, as I feel that I’m just repeating myself

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 02-Jun-23 13:55:45

I have zero sympathy for PS. He has, as WWM says, brought about his own downfall. There was a crude but very true saying years ago - ‘you don’t bonk the payroll’.

Iam64 Fri 02-Jun-23 13:56:22

The only comparison with Saville I’ve seen is the suggestion that tv companies cover up, fail to properly investigate when concerns are raised.

He’s exploited a young man he met when the boy was 15. He lied to everyone. Now he’s touring tv studios talking about being suicidal. He’d be well advised to stop talking and take himself into a mh facility to reassure his daughters and the young man that he’s at least taking responsibility for himself

Why is this unimportant, trivial story taking over the media?
A tawdry chat show and host given such prominence everywhere I look. I’m bemused and put off by so many people rubbing their hands with glee. It’s not an edifying sight.

Unless it comes to light that there has been some criminal activity, everyone should shut up.
TV hosts are two a penny.

Have we learned nothing from the Jimmy Saville scandal?

FannyCornforth Fri 02-Jun-23 13:58:08

Okay, one for the road!
That’s certainly a moot point, Shep - what came first?
‘Payroll’ or ‘Bonk’?

Smileless2012 Fri 02-Jun-23 14:00:18

And we don't know that that isn't all it was Doodledog.

Yes he has brought about his own downfall GSM but that doesn't excuse the accusations of grooming and dropping this young man because he was no longer young enough.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 02-Jun-23 14:04:05

We used “shag” instead of “bonk” but it amounts to the same thing.

In the civil service it is against the rules - well, used to be not sure about now.

I totally agree with you GrannyGravy and think the media have kept this going far beyond it’s sell by date, as they do with anything or anyone they get their teeth into. If there’s a crime, charge him, otherwise the media should drop it. As I said several days ago, we were amazed when we returned from our short cruise to find it was still all over the media. It’s time it was dropped, it’s really not interesting.
