Series two of this programme is being advertised on BBC as coming soon. I thought I would need to rewatch series one to remind myself of the story. I am currently doing this and I had forgotten how brilliant it was, Sean Bean and Lesley Manville are outstanding.

Jane43 Sun 23-Jul-23 08:29:33

I agree Vegansrock, the constant back and forth of story lines is irritating. I have watched all six episodes now and from the ending it seems there will be another series but I’m not sure I will stick with it.

loopyloo Sun 23-Jul-23 10:38:28

Have only just discovered this and am bingewatching it.
But how many different plots and characters.
Also was amused when Harry went to a government building in London as to how clean the facade was.
And also how quickly they travel despite the war.

We’re catching up and binge watching Series 1, having watched the first episode of series 2 already. Must say we’re really enjoying it and don’t mind the jumping around the various plot lines.

I am finding it hard to keep track too, far to many storylines in this program.

We didn't watch series 1 so just started on series 2 thinking we can catch up.
Yes, it does jump around a lot and is rather clichéd, a bit like £10 Poms, every possible scenario being thrown into the mix.

Are they separate stories or do all of the characters have some connection?

vegansrock Mon 24-Jul-23 05:55:59

I think they’ve all got a rather unlikely connection.

Calendargirl Mon 24-Jul-23 07:06:04

This new series seems rather disjointed.

I haven’t re-watched the old series, so have forgotten bits of it,

I can’t take to Lois, wasn’t keen on her before. Something about the way she speaks.

Actually don’t really warm to any of the characters, except for you-know-who.

(Come back Sean, pleeese….)

merlotgran Mon 24-Jul-23 08:05:25

Come back Sean, pleeese….

You do know he’s dead?? 😂

How did Kasia know that Robina’s new love interest is one of the good guys and not a spy after she found a gun, radio and other dodgy stuff in his suitcase? I must have blinked and missed that moment.

vegansrock Mon 24-Jul-23 10:34:05

Funny how all the main characters are good looking with great teeth.

Me too.

He seems very dodgy to me!!
As soon as he arrived with flowers I thought "what's his motive?" wink

I don't like any of them much except the one poor German girl whose so-called friend trapped her.

Does that French nurse actually do any nursing?

Calendargirl Mon 24-Jul-23 10:42:38

Yes, sadly, I do know that poor Sean, unlike Bobby Ewing, will not return. sad

The German girl who grassed her friend up is awful. She looks too old for the part of a 16 year old.

Surely Robina should have asked to see some I/D before allowing Mark Bonnar into her home, even if she was expecting him?

He could be a fifth columnist or similar. (Not sure what that is, some sort of spy I think).

Wearing a very dodgy wig!!
I had one with a Hei0di costume when I was about six.

Callistemon21 Mon 24-Jul-23 10:44:30

Heidi!

😁
I'm reading The Bullet That Missed at the moment, I'll let you know.

We watched the first series but had forgotten what had happened in it because such a long time has elapsed since it was on. Anyway we didn’t rewatch it and just started watching series two last week. I enjoy watching it but do find it a bit disjointed as it jumps from one place to another all the time. I suppose it’s in the title World on Fire, so they’re trying to show what was happening in different parts of the world but I find it all a bit contrived.

maddyone Mon 24-Jul-23 11:06:35

Wasn’t there a family in Germany who had a disabled child in the last series? There’s no news about them in this series.

I think that storyline was neatly wrapped up at the end of series 1 with the murder/suicide of the mother and daughter. Goodness knows what happened to the father though as he he was already skating on thin ice.

No mention of the American journalist either. 🤔

merlotgran Mon 24-Jul-23 11:57:34

The biggest laugh for me last night was the Hurricane pilot being yelled at to EJECT!! 🤣🤣

vegansrock Mon 24-Jul-23 13:00:43

I don’t know if it was last night, but we laughed at the German tank which resembled a Dalek, and the idea that there was only one.

maddyone Mon 24-Jul-23 17:53:49

Thanks merlotgran, I’d forgotten that.

travelsafar Mon 24-Jul-23 17:57:22

Harry and Kasia have to be the most miserable people ever. Can't stand Harry's voice either, so rasping. Best actors are Lesley Maniville and the Scottish actor. Both show their wealth of experience in the acting world.

Clawdy Mon 24-Jul-23 17:59:25

Lois's Manchester accent does not sound right to me.

eazybee Mon 24-Jul-23 18:01:13

I am finding it confusing, particularly the German girls and the prisoner of war (?) camp and the Red Cross Nurse.
But I haven't found any of it a good laugh.

vegansrock Mon 24-Jul-23 18:27:19

Well the wobbly sets and the airfix model plane scenes are laughable, and the unanswered questions all through stretch the imagination. I know the subject matter isn’t funny, but the production isn’t exactly big budget and it shows. The demonstration of racism in the institutions is well done.

the production isn’t exactly big budget

I was thinking about that after watching the second episode.
This is so wide ranging, covering so many aspects of WW2 that this TV version doesn't do the whole concept any favours at all.

The idea deserved a much bigger budget and should perhaps have been a cinema film.
