Only another month to go so I thought we'd better get the new thread up and running smile

I don't know many of this year's contestants so far but I guess we'll get to know them as the show continues. I see there are already comments that some of them have previous dance training.

Calendargirl Sun 08-Oct-23 20:24:52

I agree Callistemon

When contestants have appeared as stars of West End shows, there is just no comparison with another who has just dad danced at a wedding.

Plus stage school and similar, all very difficult to judge fairly and without bias.

nikita kanda is a radio presenter and broadcaster. she became the presenter of the Asian Network Breakfast in July 2022.
felt sorry for gorka.

rafichagran Sun 08-Oct-23 20:26:04

It was the right desition, she was genuinely upset to leave though.
I also love watching Lauren, I find her a lovely expressive dancer. I think Krishnan was good this week.

Grannynannywanny Sun 08-Oct-23 20:31:21

I’m thoroughly confused. Having said that, it doesn’t take much. The girl who survived the dance off, Zara? I don’t recall ever seeing her before. I did miss a chunk of last night’s show thanks to the dog jumping on the remote but I don’t remember her from previous weeks. I think I’m officially losing the plot 😳

Grandmabatty

Right decision, although I'll miss Gorka.

Me too.

Sara1954 Sun 08-Oct-23 21:07:56

Just caught up on iPlayer.
Definitely right decision, but I too will miss Gorka, he’s one of my favourites.

Mollygo Sun 08-Oct-23 22:01:14

The judges talked about errors etc, but Nikita dancing in a dull costume with uninspiring music against a couple in fancy dress, doing a paso doblé, I thought there was no contest even before they danced.

annodomini Sun 08-Oct-23 23:01:37

I still have no idea who at least half of the contestants are and why they are celebrities. Nikita, who was eliminated, was no dancer, a bit clumsy in her movements and never seemed very committed. I was surprised to see Layton in drag! Same sex couples in previous years haven't adopted a different gender. He did make rather a pretty girl!

Callistemon21 Sun 08-Oct-23 23:44:53

Me neither, annodomini.
They may dance and they may be eliminated without me ever knowing who they are!!

I did know who Les Dennis is, though

maddyone Mon 09-Oct-23 00:18:49

Ah, I missed tonight’s dance off, but gather from here that Nikita has left. It was probably the right decision as she wasn’t very good, but she tried her best.
I do agree with comments upthread about people who have trained in music and dancing and acting have an advantage. An unfair advantage really. A newsreader such as Nikita has a lot more to learn than those contestants.

Callistemon, I know who Les Dennis is too, and I was sorry to see him go because I thought he was a great sport. He couldn’t dance though, in all fairness.

Sara1954 Mon 09-Oct-23 06:15:32

I suppose they have to walk a fine line, too many obviously trained dancers and the show would lose its credibility, on the other hand, a dozen Les Dennis (no offence Les) wouldn’t hold our attention for very long.

DanniRae Mon 09-Oct-23 07:25:01

I think that the show is too long........I am yet to watch it to the end as I fall asleep zzzzzzz I record it and catch up with what I have missed on Sunday morning grin

Kandinsky Mon 09-Oct-23 08:57:20

It is too long, & far too much interviewing the dancers before & after each dance.
Cut the dancers by about 4 and cut out most of the faff.

If they cut out the interviews before and after each dance, Claudia would be redundant.

Just saying…..

In fact, does the show need two hosts?

I suspect when Strictly started, 20 or so years back, Brucie was the ‘host’, and Tess was merely ‘eye candy’, if I’m allowed to suggest that.

It would be interesting to have a look at the first series, and see how different it all was back then.

I disagree with the comments about professional dancers not being allowed since they do not necessarily go onto win the competition. I don't think Hamza had any training - and as we know he won last year.

Bill Bailey who won the previous year did have some ballroom lessons when a teenager at a dance school across the road from his home. When he was a teenager many young people learned to do some ballroom dancing as a social skill. My DH did a tint and even got a bronze medal. He went because his parents thought he would meet people!

Layton is a show dancer which doesn't make him a ballroom dancer.

What I enjoy about the show is watching the progress of some of the contestants who, as it gets closer to the final are often nearly as good as their professional partners.

NotSpaghetti Mon 09-Oct-23 16:50:50

I think Layton is quite talented to be honest but really don't feel at all warm towards him... he is simply too full of himself!
I would be very fed up if he won.

Joseann Mon 09-Oct-23 17:24:00

Layton could be in trouble with Anton because Anton said he doesn't like dancers grinning at the judges and engaging with the audience too much. ( I assume you're not meant to do that in ballroom dancing, whereas that is exactly what stage school teaches you). I don't think there is any danger of Layton missing a step because of this though, like Anton said Krishnan did.
At the moment I'm not sure how I feel about Layton, he looked a bit worried when they left calling out his name almost to the last.

Sara1954 Mon 09-Oct-23 17:26:14

NotSpaghetti
I don’t think he will win, but I think he’ll go a long way
If he does win it will be down to the voting public.

Sparklefizz Mon 09-Oct-23 17:55:58

When there have been trained dancers on the programme before, the public don't vote for them nearer the end. I'm thinking of Debbie McGee (ballet), Alexandra Burke and Aston Merrygold. I hope Layton doesn't win as he's so full of himself, especially since he did so well at the start (which I think was partly due to their Quickstep being more like a showdance). I don't mean to be horrible but I was glad he didn't do so well on Saturday.

Callistemon21 Mon 09-Oct-23 18:13:06

Aston Merrygold

I may have missed him - what a lovely name!!
It sounds like a Hobbit name, I love it 😃

Lovetopaint037 Mon 09-Oct-23 18:35:51

Fed up with it and I can’t explain why!11

Marilla Mon 09-Oct-23 19:28:57

I didn’t enjoy Saturday’s movie week. I was expecting glamour and beautiful dancing. Too many silly costumes and wigs.
Batman and Robin??

So many beautiful songs and costumes to choose from in the film world, so yes, a disappointment (what I watched).

Sorry about your electric cut, Sparklefizz, 11 hours! that's tough.
I was away, (no internet, but we have a TV). Unfortunately only 1 TV! grin, so I missed the first half an hour, as it clashed with England Rugby.
I did get to enjoy watching the rest of Saturdays show, & the results show on Sunday.
Not surprised at who had to leave, ( Jody lucky not to be in the dance off, but I'm pleased he was fit enough to take part).

Roll on next week.

TillyTrotter Mon 09-Oct-23 20:14:43

Awww power cuts on a Saturday night is pants!
I voted for Bobby, Ellie and Angela S.
The cat girl, Graziano’s partner is Zara McDermott and came to my notice 2 or 3 years ago when she was in Love Island.
So a reality TV person. Nice girl, stunning figure, could become a good dancer if she stays in the show but not enough regular viewers/voters know her.
She reminds me of a young Kelly Brook (model).
