“ I wonder, I wonder” That Cunard ad on tv.

This really annoys me! I can’t quite say why , but the voice irritates me and the suggestions he makes seem very trite.
The 40-second ad invites us “to dream of love, banquets, journeys and music beyond all belief and then, once you have done all that, forget that you were dreaming”. It features the voice of British philosopher, writer, and speaker Alan Watts. But it grates. Certainly doesn’t make me want to book a Cunard cruise!

Never been on a cruise, but love the ad and AW’s voice.

Been on several cruises ...seen most of the world, met some fascination and interesting people .....both on cruises starting in the UK, in Fort Lauderdale, Bergen, Southampton, Liverpool etc BUT may have now been on my LAST ...WHY ? since I love them ? simply because, last week I had an ad on my phone for a cruise which looked lovely, places I would like to visit ...went straight into the travel agent to book ...advertised at a good solo offer ....SO in I went, Agent called the cruise line .....offer advertised at £2,900 with special solo offers ........CAME OUT AT OVER £6,000 !!!!! apparently solo offer was only for drinks (I dont drink !) ....what they charge a solo is now getting totally ridiculous ! Asked many cruise lines why ? any excuse...'solos dont spend as much ' (they clearly haven't been in the ship shop or spa with me !)...AND solos , I have pointed out, do not eat as much as a couple ...and surely cleaning the cabin takes less effort when it is occupied by one, than two !!!! furious !..........shame, as there are cruises I wanted to go on, but refuse to be held at ransom (booked up a package holiday instead !!!!) .......) interestingly, on one cruise line site, a man boasted that 'myself and my wife NEVER spend one penny beyond the cost of the cruise;....so they make more money out of me ...I just hope they have to sail with unsold, empty cabins ......if that is what they prefer to having a solo traveller .....................grr (and one was with a specialist solo traveller site ..Passion for Cruises !!!! {anger}

I really cringe at the voiceover on the Viking cruises. Especially the way she says "thar" instead of "there"

Amalegra Sun 17-Sept-23 22:50:44

I like the idea of making some of my dreams come true, of course. But they wouldn’t be what is suggested in this advert. Nor would a cruise be among them! Too many people, too much emphasis on over indulgence and just tantalising glimpses of places I might want to spend much longer exploring. It would drive me mad!

It’s just an ad so I don’t get worked up about it.
I’ve been on several cruises, enjoyed them all, and with several different cruise lines. I did go with Cunard once, to Norway, and I’ve been back twice since, but on different cruise lines, but always on cruises. It’s the best way to see Norway in my opinion. Nothing can beat sailing in or out of a fiord, it’s absolutely awe inspiring.

It's probably an attempt to imitate a volkswagen ad that used Burton's real voice and Dylan Thomas's words.. I never saw it but apparently it is a classic. The music is annoying, but Burton's voice,,,,

I think it's a very clever advert as it's causing a fair amount of online discussion on various platforms, none if which is particularly negative. I hadn't noticed the advert myself but did follow a link and watched it. Although it wasn't my dream l had the opportunity to cruise Cunard, it proved to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life, l absolutely loved it.

I haven’t been on a Cunard cruise though I have been on many others. Someone warned us off them and said they were boring and too British ! Not sure what they meant by that so maybe one day we will give them a go and find out.

I absolutely hate this ad and quite a few others also. To me it says we've got the money and you haven't so this is not for you!

ParlorGames Mon 18-Sept-23 10:10:39

I find the ad rather over the top. I am also puzzled as to when Cunard dropped 'the fine line' from their promotional blurb

I heard that you have to 'dress' every night for dinner...........nah, not my cup of tea!

Alan Watt's voice is used all over the place:

Sorry Caravansera I see you posted this link above.

I went on the QE2 when I was a teenager. Sometimes the pool was empty and there was always a buffet somewhere in those days (and I don't remember queues for them).

It was a huge vessel though - and annoying if you left suncream or a book in your cabin! grin

charliebb Mon 18-Sept-23 14:33:06

What about the Virgin Atlantic ad 'I am what I am'. What a chamber of horrors the characters are and the music gives me an earworm every time I hear it!

Snowbell Wed 20-Sept-23 17:06:56

Nearly all ads are annoying! Especially those ridiculous meerkat ones and the Bingo ones during The Chase. Sometimes there's an amusing one the first time you see it but not the 101st!
Mostly they're not even true - where is the Ocado that's just for me? How can you spend less time getting there and more time being there when you're on a river cruise?
I could write a huge list but I don't want to bore you.

Fantastic comment from Calendargirl, pointing out that most holiday ads are pretty ridiculous. As could be said about most advertising, selling the sizzle, not the sausage?!

Caravansera and Germanshepherdsmum usually write good stuff, but are a bit off with this topic, you likely wouldn't have a mere 900 fellow passengers on a Cunard trip, but there is far more to do on cruises than many folk realise, and your hotel room does helpfully travel with you to several destinations.

You don't HAVE to use massive cruise ships that have millions of passengers, nor use lines with what could be a host of over-loud Americans some of whom are determined to make the ship run out of food (one or two Brits might do that too?!).

Fred Olsen caters for the 'more mature' British customer, on ships that are usually much smaller than many on other lines. Azamara run small ships with wonderful service levels, and not quite at full '6-star' prices, though if your budget runs to those, then you can have a great experience (just 'smart casual' if you like) on the likes of Regent, Oceania, Seabourn and similar lines.

For ParlorGames -- that "dress for dinner" thing?! A popular misconception! And not our cup of tea either! We have done it, and some folk love it, the girls having some fancy frocks, and the gents in a tux (which I hated!). I'd guess there would be 2 or 3 'formal wear' nights on a 2-week cruise? The rest of the time, well, smart casual is OK, and some lines won't like it if you turn up in swimwear and flipflops?!

BUT -- ships have a buffet, in use for b'fast and lunch, and for evening meals too (though some folk don't realise the latter), in which they'll likely have most of the options that the Main Dining Room has, but you serve yourself, not have someone bring it to you. They may even have a few other options, so if you didn't like the look of the Main Menu that night, use that venue.

PLUS -- you don't have to 'dress up', and you CAN if you fancy have 3 starters and 4 puddings?!! (etc etc).

If you're there late enough, you'll see the dancers and maybe cabaret turn up for their supper.

Assuming you prefer 'smart casual', Fred Olsen caters for the 'more mature' British customer, on ships that are usually much smaller than many on other lines, and I've seen women in cardies having dinner, blokes in braces maybe? Azamara run small ships with wonderful service levels, 'smart casual' throughout (unless they've changed) and not quite at full '6-star' prices, though if your budget runs to those, then you can have a great experience (just 'smart casual' if you like) on the likes of Regent, Oceania, Seabourn and similar lines.

I’ve just seen a Fred Olsen advert and must admit that it made me want to go on one of their cruises! I think it was the music I liked!

DH just saw the same advert and said if he went on another cruise it might be with Fred Olsen - smaller ships, less crowded.

Foxygloves Tue 26-Sept-23 22:07:55

Don't get me wrong- I am not specifically arguing against cruising but against the fatuouness of an apparently serious philosophers's idea of what we might do with unlimited money, what our "wildest dreams " are.
Well not mine matey..

Callistemon21 Tue 26-Sept-23 22:11:25

😂

I'm going to buy a big yacht and sail around the world

I wasn’t looking at the tv but when I heard the music it made me look at it. We’ve had several aurora alerts recently and people post amazing pictures but it turns out you can’t actually see it with the naked eye: it has to be via cameras with a slow exposure. They’ve only just started to make that clear. But it’s got me really wanting to see the northern lights.

….and, I’ve just bought a dress with no idea when I’m going to wear it. I went to the local Seasalt shop to buy my usual walking on the beach stuff and there was this dress. Reduced. I haven’t worn a dress since my sons wedding 7 years ago and I’ve got dresses in my wardrobe that I’ve never worn. It’s so long I’ll probably trip over it and bang my head again. If I went on a cruise I could wear all those dresses I haven’t worn…

I kept looking out for the Aurora Borealis and saw nothing much but DD's friend got some amazing photos (he takes some
great photographs of the night sky.)
