Just been watching series 6 on Netflix. Pretty good, good actress playing Diana and the actors plying Dodi and Mohamed Al Fayed very believable. A bit depressing though, with the death of Diana, brings that time back to mind.

The revue in The Guardian was pretty damning. The feeling was that the standard of the writing is very poor compared with the early episodes.

Don't read the Guardian, though. It is a British paper. We can get in online I think but by the looks of it I think their journos have a different agenda to many of us. Very young, I would imagine.

NotSpaghetti Sat 18-Nov-23 06:03:44

I don't know all the writers on the Guardian but those I do are not spring chickens - Simon Jenkins for exsmple must be 80, Martin Kettle and Polly Toynbee both 70 somethings and John Crace (whose work I love) is at least 65.
There has to be young blood too though or the paper will die - but I don't see why the staff on the Guardian should be any younger than any other paper nanna...

Maybe they seem younger for some reason? Young at heart?

Oh yes, Jonathan Freedland is probably only mid 50s.
You might know David Marr - 70s (?) as he writes on Australian politics and on censorship - I expect he is based there and I think you may be too?

Not trying to derail. Sorry.

Lucy Mangan’s in her forties. I used to enjoy her columns, especially the ones about her life with Toryboy. I prefer to make my own mind up about what I watch though, and to me The Crown is worth it for the standard of the acting and the sumptuous sets alone. In fact, just for Elizabeth Debicki’s truly remarkable performance as Diana.

Sorry but can't abide the American made up type rubbish. Dramatisation, not truth, of a couples death and all the angst of the family, plus Al Fayed conspiracy theory, that went with it. Just to bring in a few bucks. Only guessing here, dont waste my electricity watching it.

eazybee Sat 18-Nov-23 10:58:04

Agree with you, Freya.
Prurient rubbish.

The Crown has received numerous accolades, including a total of twenty-one Primetime Emmy Award wins for its first four seasons, including Outstanding Drama Series for the fourth season and seven awards for the cast. The series has also twice won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series - Drama, at the 74th and 78th ceremonies, with additional acting wins for Claire Foy, Olivia Colman, Emma Corrin, Josh O'Connor, and Gillian Anderson.

Is it?

Awards for drama/fiction

Maggiemaybe Sat 18-Nov-23 13:46:40

For drama. Which is what it is.

Anniebach Sat 18-Nov-23 14:00:30

Definitely drama, some on Tik Tok today, definitely will please
the ‘the country needs you’ brigade

eazybee Sat 18-Nov-23 15:15:06

I am sure it has won many awards,
Doesn't mean it has any quality though.

Grantanow Sat 18-Nov-23 16:02:05

Enjoyed it so far. It's not history of course, simply drama based on real people and what they might have thought, felt and said. The Diana ghost appearances are simply a way of exploring some characters' internal conversations.

The press critics seem to rubbish it but it's better than they say.

I binge watched and thought the episodes were brilliant. Looking forward to the next 4 in December.

Sadly, that will be it then won't it - no more will be made?

Sparklefizz Sat 18-Nov-23 17:10:57

Elizabeth Debicki has got Diana's voice and way of speaking off to a tee.

Freya you say plus Al Fayed conspiracy theory, In all the episodes available to watch so far, there has been no mention of this .... but as you haven't watched it, you say you're only guessing and it shows.

Delila Sun 03-Dec-23 17:00:04

I watched all four of the available episodes last night. Elizabeth Debicki has really blossomed in the role of Diana, I thought she was not much more than a few of Diana’s mannerisms in the previous series, but there’s much more to her acting than that.

If you enjoy a fairly unchallenging drama with some excellent acting, this fits the bill.

Beechnut Sun 17-Dec-23 18:54:18

I finished watching the second part earlier today.

rubysong Sun 17-Dec-23 19:06:15

I've never watched it and never will. It must be so distressing for those who were involved. I'd hate to see my family problems and tragedies made into a drama.

merlotgran Sun 17-Dec-23 19:06:41

I watched the last episode this afternoon. I think the ending was well written - a touching reminder of the passing of time.

hollysteers Sun 17-Dec-23 19:17:02

I’m watching the final episodes and wondering how they managed to get some casting so right and others laughable.
William is just right, Harry no and the Queen Mother is laugh out loud just wrong. Skinny and tremulous
when the QM was round like a Christmas pudding and steely behind the sweetness.
I can’t believe the Queen spent so much time in darkness either. Most of the interior scenes are so dark.

Parsley3 Mon 18-Dec-23 09:16:47

The actor playing William is excellent.

Acting may be good. It's still utter tripe in my eyes. Making moneyfrom peoples misfortunes and family angst. They should have gone for the Kennedys.

nanna8 Mon 18-Dec-23 10:35:07

Yes William is good.Harry perhaps not so much. I wouldn’t call it utter tripe, just dramatic license. I think the earlier series were better than this latest but that is just my opinion.

Just finished watching and agree with you nanna8.
