Caught the staged concert on Sky Arts today with Michael Ball and Matt Lucas.

I saw the show when it first came to London many, many moons ago. The set was so drab and dreary as was the production. I did not enjoy it. I saw it again about ten years ago and enjoyed it because there was now colour and some comedy to relieve the misery. Of course I now knew all the songs. Tonight we have sung a compilation of the music at our community choir and it was an exhilarating sing performed with great gusto in four parts by 70 of us.

I’ve never watched it and don’t want to either.

I’ve always hated it. Tried multiple times to enjoy it many forms and I just don’t. It’s “miserable”
For sure and while I love theater, and musicals and such it’s simply not for me. Wild horses couldn’t drag me to it

I saw it once. It was a three hour coach ride there and back which sucked all the joy out of it. I can't remember anything about the show, except that I didn't think it was a musical, but rather an opera as no words were spoken.

I think I should read the book.

Interesting to see I am not the only person never to have seen it. From the extracts I have seen eg on tv I don’t think I am tempted either.
I loved the “old “ sort of musical - Rogers and Hart, Oscar Hammerstein etc and I suspect West Side Story and My Fair Lady were among the last of that genre.
I find Andrew Lloyd Webber extremely resistible too.
A wonderful sketch by Kit and the Widow sone years ago illustrated how much of the music had been “borrowed “ from classical composers! Once you’d heard it, Lloyd Webber never seemed the same again.
Sondheim on the other hand can be wonderful and is very different.

One of my favourite musicals! I like most of ALW shows too! I wouldn't hesitate to see Les Mis again although I,ve seen it a few times.

Wonderful show, fabulous songs and, in spite of the tragedy, a feeling of uplift at the end. Love Les Mis! Still haven’t read the book however…

Seen it several times, love it! GS gave me the book having read it himself. I’m trying…

Always disliked it I am not sure why but the film was so depressing when it showed the poverty of that time .

No, not my cup of tea at all. I'm with RosiesMaw and love West Side Story, My Fair Lady and I really like Oklahoma.

Brilliant music and fine acting. Have seen the theatrical show and the film several times.

It touches the emotions. We truly enjoyed Liam Neeson in the key main role (film).

I think it’s very depressing and miserable you couldn't pay me to go.

I`ve been to see both Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera in London. I`d love to go again and again, but getting out and about is difficult, so doubt it will happen again, sadly.

I first saw Les Mis on the stage in Manchester and was spellbound, but I haven’t been able to watch it for years, Bring Him Home and the Empty Chairs at Empty Tables songs undo me and I end up a sobbing mess. It’s too close to home.

We took my husband’s aunt to see it in London in the early 1990s, she was visiting from Canada. We all loved it.

I think I must be the only person never to have seen it! I play the music on the piano quite a lot but yet to see any of the shows/watch the film.

Blood Brothers, on the other hand!!
