Baby Boomers of the 60s! These dreary January days will be cheered up if you listen to our very own Tony Blackburn on Radio 2 Saturdays and Sundays. At 80 years old and still the most dynamic and professional radio DJ who some of us listened to on our transistors when he began on Radio Caroline in the early 60s. He still peddles his wonderfully funny quips and jokes and gets me bopping round the kitchen to our favourite music, every weekend.

Phew - I thought he must have died!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 24-Jan-24 12:48:22

So did I!

MaizieD Wed 24-Jan-24 13:12:19

And me!

Perhaps I was getting him confused with Terry Wogan, who most definitely is deceased...

Tony does sound great for his age - better than Jonny Walker who is lovely but does sound a bit ancient.

I always have Tony’s Sounds of the Sixties on on Saturday mornings. It wouldn’t be a Saturday without him.

Poppyred Wed 24-Jan-24 15:29:52

Yes, love him and Steve Wright. They play my kind of music.

Clawdy Wed 24-Jan-24 15:35:13

Love the Saturday morning sixties programme. I listen to it on the BBC sounds app so I don't have to wake at six! Also I can fast forward the news in the middle, and the Dermot O'Leary chat!

I'm another one who thought he had shuffled off this mortal coil!!
Sometimes listen to the podcast pick my favourite tunes and skip past his jokes.

BlueBelle Wed 24-Jan-24 15:59:22

I thought he must have died too
I m not bothered with him he’s a jolly fella though but long gone off my radar

Why not listen to Boom Radio and get music like this everyday? It's such a good station for cheering you up and very popular with Radio 2 refugees

A Tony Blackburn joke:

Patient: Doctor, Doctor I keep thinking I'm a pair of curtains.

Doctor: You really should pull yourself together.

Boom Boom! Sorry everyone.

My husband listens to him, and always saves up his silly jokes to tell our grandson.
I was never a big fan, I always think of Arnold yapping away. Actually, was it Arnold, or Alfred?

Grannmarie Wed 24-Jan-24 20:21:27

I have enjoyed Sounds of the Sixties since the days of Brian Matthew. I remember Tony Blackburn from the start of Radio 1, still listening to him on Saturdays but not at 6 a.m.!! I listen later on BBC Sounds.

I can still sing the words to the jingle he used. Summer radio, on the Tony Blackburn show.

Happy to see he's still alive

Harris27 Wed 24-Jan-24 20:38:25

Phew I also thought he’d died! Love Johnnie walker as well on a Sunday!

Another Tony Blackburn joke:

Doctor, doctor. I keep thinking I’m a moth.

Well, shouldn’t you be going to a vet?

Yes but I was passing and saw your light was on!

🥳

I always listen to Tony on BBC sounds every morning when I’m doing our company bank stuff, it wouldn’t be the same without him in the background, he’s such a lovely genuine man who is as passionate about his profession as the day he started.

Can’t wait for his live show later in the year at High Wycombe.

Love it. Perhaps we should start a thread on his jokes. Is the world ready for it?

It was Arnold.

I totally agree. What a wonderful era the 60's were. I was a teenager bopping around the Mecca Locarno dance floor, the local town hall jive nights and it is wonderful that we can listen to our music when and where we want. All my playlists are of the late 50's and early 60's music. In summer, you will see me wearing my ear buds, bopping around the garden with my sweeping brush.

Another Tony B joke
Courier delivers a giant roll of bubble wrap to a company. The receptionist says "thank you pop it in the corner". He was there for six hours. Boom boom.
Ps my original point was that Tony Blackburn MAKES the show! His enthusiasm is utterly infectious and uplifting.

Candelle Fri 26-Jan-24 12:50:00

I am still very cross with Tony Blackburn!

Many (45?) years ago my daughter entered a radio quiz and was through to the last two children, herself and a boy.

The final question was simple, 'how many donuts in a baker's dozen?'. My daughter opened her mouth to answer and Tony Blackburn said 'oh, I can hear that XX (my daughter) is having help, the prize goes to ZZ (the boy)'.

I had not said one word and the help was to the boy. As the prize was a computer - a wonderful prize at the time - my daughter was extremely upset at this unfairness and I have never forgiven Tony Blackburn!!

I know, I know, I should have managed to be over this by now!

Clawdy Sat 27-Jan-24 09:03:18

Ooh that sounds very annoying! Did you contact the show and tell them it was the boy who had help?

IrmaPrunesquallor Mon 22-Jul-24 09:41:38

Candelle,

You should write to Tony B. and remind him and ask him to look into it. I wonder if they still have the recording. Not sure how they would ever make amends now though, but at least if it was recognised and they apologise?

Good luck
Irma.
