Having just watched the first semi finals of Eurovision I was shocked at how it has changed. Once a competition to find the best song it now seems that the musical composition is irrelevant and the main focus is on the sometimes hideous and overtly erotic performances by the so called artists wearing very little.. Time to call it a day as I fail to see how it can be taken seriously.

Yes Chestnut, we judge if we like the act or dislike it, according to personal taste, its a competition no need for some of the nasty comments made here.
I would also agree some people will not like it, although where do you get your information from that more people detest it? I would say to the people that dislike it, you have many other channels you can watch.
Upthread Chestnut you asked me what I found offensive, well there are many things, but a contest singing, dancing and performing is not one of them.
I wish Ollie the best of luck.

I've only heard the Israel entry, I thought that was quite good.

I shall have to look up you tube for the others

The thing is perhaps the guy could have made a decent song out of it, but it’s immediately taken over by smut I honestly haven’t got any problem with guys doing what the heck they want to do with other guys but I don’t want to watch it particularly on what’s considered a family show at early o clock
Unfortunately the sexual grinding took over the act and the music became second to the dancing penises or is that peni

It was not at all possible to know what the story was trying to portray it’s about grinding men but are they shut in a toilet or a spaceship flying around ?

I am so laughing, "the eurovulsion degeneracy contest". Sums it up nicely.

rafichagran I like Olly Alexander’s song. The accompanying performance on the main show is due to be a ^technical masterpiece^

What, they'll stick their head down the toilet and grind each other's genitals at the same time?

😲😆 a technical masterpiece? Yuk.
I think anyone who says they like the UK entry video either has to be gay, has a gay close relative or is trying hard to be ‘down wiv da kids’.It was just horrible, worse than even the Irish entry.

Oreo Fri 10-May-24 08:00:56

There is no reason that a gay male singer couldn’t have sung a great song which included dancers but was a good entertaining watch by the whole family, but no, either the singer or the production team went for the whole exhibionist in yer face gay nine yards.

Oreo Fri 10-May-24 08:02:32

Exhibitionist, not the above🤭

The question was what you might find offensive in a performance. Here we have males grinding and simulating sex in a public toilet and you find that okay. So what kind of dance or song would you find offensive?

I think this absurdly crude 'performance' deserves a full critical analysis, that is what you call 'nasty' comments. It is as low as you can get. Whatever committee approved this for representing the country should have realised the problems that would arise.

According to the official report Olly Alexander’s video/performance

transports viewers into a post-apocalyptic dystopian boxing gym locker room, aboard a spaceship nurturing towards Earth through a black hole in 1985

GrannyGravy13 Fri 10-May-24 09:30:01

hurtling not nurturing 🤬

Oh, yes, we've all been there, know what it feels like 😂

grumppa Fri 10-May-24 09:57:27

I can think of nowhere to which I could desire less to be transported.

MayBee70 Fri 10-May-24 10:07:28

Given that the acts are getting more and more elaborate with more and more dancers and more and more gimmicks I’m rather hoping tat Latvia will win; one man with a beautiful voice standing on stage singing a beautiful song. I don’t usually like ballads so it takes a special one for me to sit up and take notice.

"According to the official report Olly Alexander’s video/performance

That sounds to me like the result of a game of Consequences, where each player writes a name or phrase to go with each section and folds the paper over so that no-one can see what they've written. At the end, the paper is unfolded and the scenario is read out.

Callistemon21 Fri 10-May-24 10:13:50

Olly wasn't even born in 1985 .....

I do apologise for mistaking it for a public toilet.

I was so pleased to read this thread and find that I am not alone in finding the video forBritain’s entry absolutely vile and inappropriate. Like others have said, I am not a prude, but how could I watch this with my preteen granddaughter. Eurovision used to be family entertainment.

Totally!! Ridiculous that the 'powers that be 'decided that it was suitable for family viewing. Yes ,we all know there is an off switch. However SOME children will be watching it and those who are not allowed (because they have sensible parents) will probably feel 'left out'.Depraved is putting it mildly!😈

Namsnanny Fri 10-May-24 12:10:15

I shall be looking up the Latvian entry on you tube now. At least no one will be shouting and booing over the song.

zakouma66 Fri 10-May-24 13:45:04

Oh I used to love Eurovision. It was a peek into a glamerous world. The dresses, Katie Boyle in peach flitting effortlessly between languages, a man with a moustach picks up a baton and conducts a full live orchestra, a waif like figure from some obscure Balkan place belts out a heart breaker.

Later, Terry Wogan with his pithy and witty observations.

And now we have Bambi and sex in a toilet.

Much of it has been very strange over the years

Sam would have won but for the political vote! He was quite normal 😀

Oh for the days of Terry Wogan

I always watch it , it's seems to be who can look the most weird now
