Rebus BBC IPlayer starts 17 May

I didn’t stick with it either. Switched off after ten minutes. Disappointed.

Dh is a big Ian Rankin fan and we both love the Ken Stott Rebus adaptations.
We watched the first episode and my husband was “unconvinced” but we would watch episode 2 to give it a fair chance. It certainly grew on us, we’ve watched the whole series!
Bingeing a series is something he rarely does.
So , give it a fair chance and stick with it, it’s fabulous.
I loved the east coast accents and cadence, even as someone from greater Glasgow, but subtitles are available!

Hope it grows on us too. Neither of us enjoyed last nights offering.

I watched half episode one but plan to give it another go tonight. I enjoyed the books. Rebus is a typical heavy drinking moody solitary man but has redeeming features. Hope these begin to show

I wasn't keen after one episode but binge watched another two and am now hooked. I want to know how this tangled mess is resolved.

I've never read any of the Rebus books somehow. Ian Rankin seems to be a very nice chap and is often seen out and about round here. He seems very friendly and approachable. I really must read one of his books!
We are so fortunate to have him, Alexander McCall Smith and JK Rowling living so nearby.

We watched 2 episodes last night and I was not expecting much but we both enjoyed it.

So much I had to stop him going for the third as it was my bed time 😁

At least we have something to watch now.

We enjoyed it, took a few seconds for this southerner to ‘tune in’ to the accent, we’ll watch it weekly. For some reason, possibly sitting too long, we don’t binge watch.

I have read every Rebus book known to man but did not enjoy last night's version. I thought that Siobhan was miscast- not as she appears in the books. I will watch next week's as it may improve for me.

Really enjoyed it. Ken Scott was certainly the best but this one comes a close second.

I agree about Siobhan being miscast so far but there is no relationship between them. I liked the Ken Stott Rebus/Siobhan double act and that is missing here.

Loved Ken Stott, he was just right. I am not sure about this young version. I could not get used to him being young but as the story is set in the past but everything was too modern. Phones, lap tops, cars, clothes. Why not of the time the books were written? If you watched the docs after all about Rankin filmed over twenty years ago, the place and atmosphere the stories. I do not think this version has the right feel.

I do so hate it when everything has a ‘woke’ stamp. I too have read all the Rebus books ; not terribly impressed with this.

I enjoyed it. I did not find this woke or PC especially as Rebus was having a affair with his friend/bosses wife who is a wheelchair user.

I loved it. It was dark, confusing and wonderful. Just as Rebus should be.

Only watched two episodes up to now, loved them both. And quite important to me, Ian Rankin was involved as an Executive Producer and in interviews has explained the concept of it, I.e. it’s a younger Rebus but set in current times, and how happy he is with it and all the changes.
I really liked that it was actually filmed in Edinburgh, as opposed to so many programmes that claim to be set somewhere and patently are not.
Yes, there are differences from the books, e.g. where Rebus lives, Siobhan doesn’t appear until book five, Malcolm Fox doesn’t appear until very much later in the books. Michael and his life is very different from the books but I think what they’ve done with him worked well.
My only real complaint would be that this Rebus isn’t into his music, what he listens to is mentioned in every book, it’s an important part of his character. And a minor quibble - Cafferty isn’t scary enough, perhaps because the actor’s face is so well kent.

Woke ? PC? What does this mean in respect of the new Rebus

I agree granny dark hair, music as essential as fags and alcohol plus Cafferty should be terrifying

Woke …..in the books Siobhan is mentioned only once as Glaswegian / Irish.. Lovely though the new Siobhan is, she was never of Asian heritage. We must be inclusive these days apparently

Dreadfully disappointed that it was set in modern times. I had read Ian Rankin's very positive views in the Radio Times article and both DH and I were looking forward to watching as we expected it to be set in the past...... We were I initially confused and then increasingly frustrated as the drama continued. It is clearly aimed at the younger viewer even to the extent that it is only 45 minutes long.....! I agree with others about John Hannah and Ken Stott but cannot relate to this 21st Century version though the actor is convincing as the young Rebus. Having read all the books and watched several Stott Episodes, I feel the old Rebus was such an authentic man of his time, he deserved to have his past restored....and so did we. Feels like an opportunity lost... Won't be watching again.

I'm disappointed. I always imagined Rebus and Cafferty as much the same age and this one is so young. He seems to be something of a fitness freak as well (could this be for a few shots of a shirtless Rankin?) which was never the character. I'm not sure updating a police story which was so much of its time works. Ian Rankin may be involved but possibly the money mattered.

I,too. was disappointed and, in fact, slightly confused. There are characters from early stories all mixed up with those from later books. Is the series going to revolve round Rebus and Cafferty and if so, how are they going to weave in his family and particularly his daughter and his brother, Michael?
This is aiming at a new audience, but if those new fans decide to read the books, they are going to be as confused as are we, the 'old' readers!

I loved Ken Stott and Rebus.
I also like this new version...... Just going with it and enjoying what it is.

Reserving judgement for now. Loved Ken Stott as Rebus. One episode watched - love the Edinburgh scenery and also tge accents being an East Coast scot.
