Watched this last night. It was brilliant. It's based on a true story. Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren are great (although their Geordie accents are a bit strained). I remember seeing the headlines about the painting of the Duke of Wellington being stolen.but I never knew the background or the reason.
It doesn't seem to have been promoted by the Beeb but it is worth watching.

Agree, it’s an excellent movie

Thanks for the heads up Glorianny sounds interesting, I see it's on IPlayer, I'll watch it especially as the leads are such good actors.

Just realised I missed the "r" out of strained in the OP

It is excellent TerriBull . It's funny and moving. Hope you enjoy it.

I loved that film.

I enjoyed it. I rarely watch films especially if they are in any way comedies, but this was very good.

I thought it was excellent and the courtroom scenes were hilarious. His description of the location of Biker 🤣

It is such a good film. I was an art student in the 60s so I remember the theft well. It seemed such a huge thing at the time and it was amazing to see how very ordinary the perpetrators were.

Saw it was on bbc 2 by sheer chance (not a football fan) so watched it and really enjoyed it. I like anything with Jim Broadbent in he’s a great actor and Helen Mirren was amazing I had to do a double take when she first appeared, two great actors. I do remember when the theft happened but had forgotten the story round it. It’s a very entertaining film and Im so glad I found it.

On our list of what to watch, thanks for the recommendation.

I saw part of it when I was channel hopping last night and made a point of watching it.

If you enjoyed The Duke you will probably enjoy The Phantom of the Open which again is based on a true story about Maurice Flitcroft, a redundant crane driver, who decides to blag his way into playing in the Open. Mark Rylance played the lead with Sally Hawkins as his long suffering wife.

Watched it last night, delightful. I do love, often under the radar, small budget British films, albeit with big stars. Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren are such good character actors, Helen Mirren shedding her usual glamorous self to look rather down trodden and dowdy, almost unrecognisable!

We also enjoyed it very much, a welcome escape from the football. After that we watched the Mother, we chose it because it was with Anne Reid and Daniel Craig. It’s about 20 years old and long before Bond. Anne Reid must have been in her sixties, and Craig was her daughter’s boyfriend. The sex scenes are extremely graphic, and we wondered if she dined out on them when Craig became Bond. I would have done! Not one to watch with children!

As an exiled North Easterner I can spot a fake Geordie accent. It is I admit a hard accent to do.Brenda Blethyn does a decent one as Vera. The actors in The Canoe Man had strong Northumbrian accents although they were from Seaton Carew near Hartlepool which is completely different and more like a Middlesbrough accent.

The accent threw me a little too at the beginning but it seemed to get better as the film progressed or maybe I just got used to it. It made for easy watching. Helen Mirren always good to watch and Jim Broadbent too.

Thanks for the heads up, I missed it in the schedules. I'll definitely look for it on iplayer

I saw it last night. A bit silly at times but Helen Mirren showing how versatile she can be.

Wonderful British tragi-comedy. Loved it!

Thanks for the prompt Glorianny, I watched it last night and I really enjoyed it.

So pleased people like it.

I watched The Mother a bit a go Bazza. Never thought of Anne Reid in that sort of role.
Daniel Craig's career before Bond was fascinating. He was in Our Friends in the North as well. Looked totally different>

Yes it was a good film, i didn’t know anything about the story, somehow must have missed it!

Iam64 Fri 21-Jun-24 13:38:36

Another good British film is The Great Escaper.

Thank you for the recommendation, whilst other half was watching football, I donned headphones and watched on my iPad.

I loved it - DH complained my laughter was distracting. 😆
