“Every now and then, New Zealand produces a corking television drama – Top of the Lake, say, or (with caveats) Outrageous Fortune and The Luminaries. After the Party could just be the best one yet, pivoting on a beautifully nuanced he said/she said scenario and a very fine central performance. It concerns Wellington teacher Penny Wilding (Robyn Malcolm), who is respected, unorthodox and straight-talking, without falling into the usual clichéd traps of those traits. Her description of online pornography before a classroom of teenagers could be essential viewing for concerned parents everywhere. She is as stunned as her daughter Tara Canton) is thrilled by the unexpected return of her ex-husband Philip (Peter Mullan, typically jovial and dangerous), five years after he left in the wake of a transgression at the titular drunken, multi-generational party which gradually comes into focus. Provocative and exasperating, Malcolm’s layered, complex performance is reminiscent of Kate Winslet’s in Mare of Easttown, currying no favour with the audience yet commanding our attention throughout. Continuing tomorrow and boxsetted online, this is TV made for bingeing.”

Well, I'm exhausted just watching her.
She reminds me of someone I knew, can't quite remember who 🤔
I struggled through Episode 1, I quite liked her as a character but everything else left me a bit cold.
But on the strength of all the positives on here I'll keep going - something to watch while we all batten down the hatches over the weekend!

Dreadful, acting and script. I predict she’ll be proved wrong in the end.
Glad I didn’t teach in NZ if this is the standard,
I’m loving it.
The tension is building nicely. I’m also really enjoying seeing Wellington. It’s very hilly! The houses look so different to ours in the UK. A lot of dark wood inside. Like a step back 30 years. No contemporary greys here! And the coastline, the beach, the birds and the dolphins are delightful.
I don’t like her either.
In fact, don’t take to any of the characters.
Find the whole thing rather creepy actually.

It is fiction.
Why do we see her modelling in the nude for art classes?
What has that got to do with anything?
Is it to show what a liberal and free thinking spirit she is?
Yes, I wondered that too Calendargirl
I think so Calendargirl. She’s a ‘no topic off limits’ woman. Confident. Outspoken. And (I think) just plain wrong. I think something else is lurking beneath the waters here.
I haven’t binge watched it, so no idea of the outcome.
It seems that even before this incident, she picked up on lots of ‘red flags’ re her husband’s behaviour around young boys.
Did she just turn a blind eye, and it all came to a head at this party?
Is she now concerned for the safety of the grandson with him?
What do all their colleagues and friends make of it all?
Divided loyalties, it appears.
The 3 year old with long hair past their shoulder blades confused me. Boy or girl? At least the pronoun ‘boy’ was used not ‘them/they’ so my confusion was short lived!
I don't think she was turning a blind eye .... I think all those previous red flags fell into place, Calendargirl when she thought back on them.
The red flags fell into place for me regarding my ex husband once I knew for sure he was having an affair ... all that "being called into work", "forgetting" to fill up with petrol and popping out for it, etc etc It all made sense.
Ah.
I've just checked and it's six episodes.
Now, if it was three or even four, I might persevere with it, but it's one of those dramas that leaves you feeling anxious and quite depressed.
I need something quirky and uplifting, not dismal.
Will give it a go, thanks.
It was the name of the GS that alerted me to the fact he was a boy- ‘Walt’ or ‘Walty’.
Having said that, could well be either now, the way names are used.

I find her very unappealing too.. very abrasive and I wish she'd brush her hair..
However her sex talk was genius.. I hope we have real life teachers over here that replicate it..

If you've got Netflix watch "Joy" about the invention of IVF and the women who desperately wanted a baby. It's a dramatisation with a great cast.

I remember the birth of Louise Brown very well.
Just wondering if there will be a second series? No spoilers, but loose ends....

You might find Judge Marianne on More4 more appealing Allira.. It's French, quirky and quite amusing..
Just finished all six episodes.
Bluddy brilliant! Such a twist in the tale in that last episode. I cried. Fabulous acting by all in this production. All the characters were believable and I engaged with them all. I’m so glad I watched it.
Oh, ok, I'm convinced!
I'll watch it 🙂
