“Every now and then, New Zealand produces a corking television drama – Top of the Lake, say, or (with caveats) Outrageous Fortune and The Luminaries. After the Party could just be the best one yet, pivoting on a beautifully nuanced he said/she said scenario and a very fine central performance. It concerns Wellington teacher Penny Wilding (Robyn Malcolm), who is respected, unorthodox and straight-talking, without falling into the usual clichéd traps of those traits. Her description of online pornography before a classroom of teenagers could be essential viewing for concerned parents everywhere. She is as stunned as her daughter Tara Canton) is thrilled by the unexpected return of her ex-husband Philip (Peter Mullan, typically jovial and dangerous), five years after he left in the wake of a transgression at the titular drunken, multi-generational party which gradually comes into focus. Provocative and exasperating, Malcolm’s layered, complex performance is reminiscent of Kate Winslet’s in Mare of Easttown, currying no favour with the audience yet commanding our attention throughout. Continuing tomorrow and boxsetted online, this is TV made for bingeing.”

After watching Moonflower Murders on iPlayer (recording failed) then Shetland, we decided to leave this for another night.
Our brains are working overtime!

Enjoyed part 1 and watched second episode straight after. Very good acting and storyline. Will have to watch Shetland on catch up now!

Charleygirl5 Wed 20-Nov-24 23:12:04

I watched Shetland first and then this but I did not enjoy it so gave up after 25 minutes. Maybe I did not give it long enough.

What a fantastic drama this is turning out to be. I am halfway through episode 2 and it knocks spots off Shetland.
Loving it!

I'll give it a go, the last NZ drama, can't remember the name now, in fact there have been a couple were very good.

First episode of the new Shetland was boring, we gave up after that. Shame! the books are good.

😁😁

I watched the first episode last night. Apart from the initial working out the jumping timeline I found it good, I shall continue watching.

To share from the Telegraph today as it’s behind a paywall and it was their tv guide suggestion that inspired me to suggest this new drama:

Fantastic drama boasts TV performance of the year

The best TV performance of the year is by an actor most British viewers won’t recognise, in a New Zealand production that most won’t see (few people flock to Channel 4 for a drama fix these days). The actor is Robyn Malcolm in After the Party; if Kate Winslet or Sarah Lancashire played this role even half as well, they’d have the Baftas all sewn up.

I was reluctant to watch it because it was billed as a story about sexual abuse allegations, which is nobody’s idea of a good time. But I’m so glad I did, and it’s in no way as grim as that description suggests.

Malcolm plays Penny, a science teacher and grandmother who is married to the convivial Phil (Peter Mullan). She throws a house party for his birthday. It’s a happy, boozy affair, although some teenagers pilfer a bottle of alcohol and one boy gets so drunk that he has to be put to bed. Then Penny realises she hasn’t seen Phil for a while, goes upstairs to look for him, and finds him lying on the bed with the drunken and semi-naked teen.

Horrified, she hauls Phil downstairs and accuses him of child abuse. Penny is the type to come straight out and say what she thinks, unafraid of the repercussions. She’s earthy, unembarrassable and gloriously no-nonsense. The first episode opens with her leading an impromptu sex education lesson after finding one of her pupils watching porn on their phone, and doing it so well that you’ll wish there was a Penny in every school.

But here’s the issue: Penny may be an unreliable witness. The teenage boy denies that anything untoward happened. Phil denies it too, saying he was simply looking after the kid and making sure he didn’t choke on his own vomit. And as viewers, we’re not sure either: a glimpse of what Penny saw in the bedroom is ambiguous. Could she have made a terrible mistake?

These scenes are told in flashback. In the present day, several years later, Penny is getting on with her life when she learns that Phil – having returned to his native Scotland to escape the scandal, although no charges were ever brought – has just arrived back in town to take up a new job. Not only that, but plenty of people believe Penny got it wrong, including the couple’s daughter.

The setting, a very windy Wellington, feels fresh to British eyes. The plot vaguely follows the beats of a thriller over its six episodes, as Penny tries to prove that Phil was guilty and remains a danger. Her single-mindedness becomes frustrating and leads her to make some bad judgement calls. Penny feels messy and real, and Malcolm’s phenomenal performance will keep you hooked.”

I enjoyed it and am looking forward to episode two tonight. The acting was very convincing.

KG1241 Thu 21-Nov-24 18:37:07

Watched Episode 1 last night, looking forward to Episode 2 later tonight.

TerriBull Thu 21-Nov-24 22:11:47

I've just finished episode 2, I think it's very good, a bit different plus it's a plus to see some of urban NZ. Peter Mullan popped up in another NZ drama a while back with Elizabeth Moss.

I loved Top of the Lake

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 22-Nov-24 17:37:10

It’s really good drama isn’t it?

The Spinoff reviewer Duncan Greive called the show "queasy, morally complex and NZ's best TV drama in years... a dark, tense and highly provocative drama which will rattle uneasily around your mind for days".

The Guardian reviewer Luke Buckmaster called it "one of the greatest performances in any TV show in years".

Kylie Northover of The Sydney Morning Herald gave the series five stars, calling it "what might be the best New Zealand drama ever produced".
