Having a discussion with my husband about of all things, the different innovations that helped make the Diesel engine a success, he ended by saying 'I didn't expect to have that conversation with you, Is there anything you couldn't find some interest in?'
'Bagpipes', (first thing that came into my head). grin

But have i just watch a fantastic program on sky Bagpipes a Celebration.

The program showed some wonderful Scottish scenery, but I've never heard the bagpipes played so beautifully. Such a talented group of dedicated musicians from all over Scotland, both men and women.

If anyone is interested I think it is repeated tomorrow at 4.35pm.

Well worth a catchup.

I second this Namsnanny.Such a beautiful programme with magnificent scenery and exceptionally talented musicians. The music was beautiful and varied ,rounded off with a superb rendition of the old favourite,Scotland the Brave.

Which Sky channel was this on Namsnanny?

Mollygo Wed 18-Dec-24 22:43:15

Sky Arts tomorrow at 4.35pm according to my TV.

Yes Thanks Mollygo. Also on Now.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it too Greenfinch. Everyone was so enthusiastic, and some wrote their own music.
For me, nothing could be more thrilling than watching a lone piper on the top of a peak surrounded by the glorious colours of autumn playing the forlorn sounding notes that the pipes do so well.
I'm looking forward to watching again. 🙂

I absolutely adore bagpipe music but sadly we don’t hear it that often here. There is a local group who play but they rarely do public performances.

Greenfinch Thu 19-Dec-24 12:58:39

I shall try to watch it again Namsnanny. To be honest I wasn’t going to watch because I thought it would be all chat and technology but DH switched it on and I was so glad. The windswept performance of the young lady called Ailis was pure magic.

There's bagpipe music and bagpipe music or rather pipers. Good pipers and good bands are absolutely unbeatably wonderful. However, there are some chancers out there taking advantage of tourists and giving the pipes a bad name. Several times I've been on Princes Street in Edinburgh and there have been 'pipers' just playing random notes to give a general impression of music. I suspect that it's people like that who give bagpipes a bad name. Tourists don't know any better and must think pipe music is a ghastly concatenation of sound.

Don’t bus,ers need a license Aveline? I know they do in Glasgow .If they are just rubbish someone should be aware and take the permission away.
On a lighter note ,we took a Croatian friend to see what he thought was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers,he was quite disappointed to discover it was the Red Hot Chilli PIPERS in a wet west of Scotland d park.He had a ball…Bagrock is still a great memory for him 15 or more years on .These guys can do anything on bagpipes

One for my too watch list. Something about bagpipes that stirs this sassenachs heart. Or perhaps from my distant ancestry. .

Aveline Thu 19-Dec-24 14:22:40

Red Hot Chilli Pipers are terrific!

Do come back and give us your verdict, although I'm sure it will be positive, Freya5🎵🎶

Fair play to the drummers also 🥁

Yes we were having coffee out somewhere and DH started talking about the second law of thermodynamics,
and I remembered why I married him.
Or at least one of the reasons.....

Aveline Thu 19-Dec-24 15:15:06

Oh yes. Pipe band drumming is an art. I was so impressed by a young school band last summer. The pipers were great and it was lovely when they stopped and gave the drummers a chance of a solo. I was almost in tears with happiness that such youngsters were so good so soon. Gave me hope for the future of piping. They were all under 14.

If they could have aired the programme without a musical background, it would've suited me down to the ground. I love everything to do with music, except certain instruments which make me want to throw bricks through glass! It's probably very difficult to play the bagpipes, all the more so because the instrument can't produce every note they need to even on standard Scottish tunes. The sound of that half-tone flat or sharp --- oooh, I'm looking round for bricks now, I shouldn't have started this reply. ;>

One of my cousins was a World Champion Piper. He also composed music. I love the pipes but realise others may not.

Greenfinch Thu 19-Dec-24 16:54:20

Even more enjoyable the second time round. Have just listened to Highland Cathedral ( my favourite). The scenery is stunning.

Oh no, I missed it, got busy as you do. Hoping to see it at some point, but can only catch up with, now,sky or virgin, non of which I have. Might appear on you tube.
Totally agree with drums too. The Royal Marines are amazing at that too.
I'm sure it was wonderful. 😔

No we don’t have Sky. Mostly Amazon, Netflix and other American garbage unfortunately. We do have YouTube and I’ll check that out.

Neilspurgeon0 Sat 21-Dec-24 11:05:28

As a former, not very good but enthusiastic piper I can only second all the positive comments on here. Those that can pipe well really are amazing and the pipes are difficult to perfect but easy to sound dreadful, like the violin

Aveline Sat 21-Dec-24 11:31:59

There was a very nice blind man where I worked. He had a lovely guide dog. We all felt very sorry for the poor dog when the man took up the pipes. Over time he improved but I still remember the agonised face on the poor dog in the early days.

I despise the sound of bagpipes, I always have done. The sound used to scare the hell out of my cat. Not nowadays, the cat''s dead. One programme I won't be watching.

Metra Sat 21-Dec-24 12:20:09

For me, the sound of the bagpipes is just about the most unmusical sound of any instrument but I admit that, in the right surroundings, they are atmospheric
