I really fancy this. Anyone else?

“ With farmers’ woes so much in the headlines, there couldn’t be a timelier moment for this intense rural thriller starring Martin Clunes (who in real life owns a 130-acre farm in Dorset) as Nathan Williams, a farmer in the Welsh Marches whose peaceful, predictable, hardworking lifestyle is shattered by the blight of county lines drug dealing. Writer Marc Evans takes time to carefully sketch out Williams’s character (a widower with a live-in teenage son, a daughter in France and an estranged brother) and the daily rhythms and idiosyncrasies of a rural location on the fringes of a small town suffering the all too familiar ills of unemployment, antisocial behaviour and drug abuse. There are other threats to farming life, too, in the form of deepening economic pressures – but it’s the more immediate problem of Nathan’s son Johnny’s (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) struggle to escape the influence of a local drug dealer that prompts most of the drama in tonight and tomorrow’s opening episodes, of six.”

I don't think I can watch it

keepingquiet Sun 19-Jan-25 21:13:50

Just started watching it thanks for the heads up!

Jaxjacky Sun 19-Jan-25 21:15:44

Will watch it when we’ve finished with SAS Rogue Heroes.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 19-Jan-25 21:36:58

Actually I can’t watch it tonight either Jax, I’ve been chatting with a friend but I plan to watch it during the day tomorrow on catch up itv. I think it looks a really promising drama.

I enjoyed the first episode although storylines about teenagers/drugs/county lines always make me uneasy. Add rural issues into the mix and I think it might be a hard watch.

Martin Clunes is excellent as always

Allira Sun 19-Jan-25 22:59:43

Yes, it's making me uneasy too, merlotgran.

Farming is a tough life.
Loving the scenery though! 😀

MissAdventure Sun 19-Jan-25 23:01:21

Oh, bum!!!
Have I missed it? angry
I had it earmarked to watch, too.

Bridie22 Mon 20-Jan-25 07:30:55

Watched the first two episodes, it's interesting so far.

I don’t care for Martin Clunes, never watched Doc Marten, but thought I would give this a go, although the storyline looked depressing.

It jumped about quite a lot, sometimes I wasn’t sure if we were in Nathan’s house or his deceased neighbour’s.

He spent quite a bit of time in the pub, just having the odd pint.

But it was when he offered Eva a cleaning job at his home. No mention of what was expected of her, how many hours she would work or what her pay would be.

For a hard up farmer, that would have been important, I would have thought.

No doubt she will be a love interest.

Watched the first episode and enjoyed it. The son, Johnny, is played by the son of Lorraine Ashbourne and Andy Serkis, both great actors. He's actually 20 in real life but playing a 15 year old!

BlueBelle Mon 20-Jan-25 07:43:09

I m with you Calandergirl not a Martin Clunes fan at all and don’t watch much with him in
I thought it was a bit predictable and again like you would you just take a cleaner on to go in to clean your personal rooms
(bedrooms) without even checking their background or getting a reference and how many cleaners would cook a meal (with all the ingredients to hand) on their first day or even week
I ll stick with it as not much else to watch but not impressed so far My opinion might all change though

BlueBelle Mon 20-Jan-25 07:44:26

Ps no idea who Lorraine Ashbourne or Andy Serkis are 🤣

They've both done lots of TV and film work - Google them!

Pittcity Mon 20-Jan-25 08:26:40

What accent was Martin Clunes attempting?

Photo of Lorraine Ashbourne and Andy Serkis attached. To be fair he's usually heavily disguised as Gollum or King Kong. She was recently in Sherwood and is in the new series, Riot Women.

merlotgran Mon 20-Jan-25 08:34:57

I recognise her but not him.

Clawdy Mon 20-Jan-25 08:41:51

Serkis and Ashbourne for parents - wonder how he got the part??!

Calendargirl Mon 20-Jan-25 08:49:21

I recognised his name, Serkis, but no idea who his dad was.

His mum has been in lots of stuff, of course.

PinkCosmos Mon 20-Jan-25 08:55:01

I watched the first episode and will watch the rest. It's not exactly a laugh a minute but it is good drama.

I like Martin Clunes but find it hard to think of him as anyone other than Doc Martin. After the first half an hour I had bought into his character.

I though his slight Welsh accent was fine. I think if he had done a full on Welsh accent it would have sounded too OTT. I think he did say his father was English though.

rafichagran Mon 20-Jan-25 09:17:29

I will watch as well on catch up. I watched Lockerbie which I am really enjoying.

Redhead56 Mon 20-Jan-25 09:20:05

I have never been a fan of Martin Clunes but I was never a fan of Martin Freeman either until I watched The Responder. He was made for that part so I will watch it and see how Martin Clunes is as farming is close to his heart.
The story line about the impact of County Lines dealing and the already difficult enough times for farmers sounds an interesting watch.

Oreo Mon 20-Jan-25 09:56:34

Thanks for the heads up about this drama, and I like Martin Clunes in just about anything.

MissAdventure Mon 20-Jan-25 10:08:27

Me too. smile

Welsh accents vary too, just as English accents do.
This is supposed to be Border country although I think some of it is filmed elsewhere.

I'm not sure why but I just couldn't get into it. Id fancied it so decided to abandon it and try another day.
