Just had email from Talking Pictures TV( TPTV on Freeview)
From Saturday 22nd Feb at 8pm, they are showing the whole series again.
They did a few years ago.
I will rewatch as one of my favorite dramas of the 70s (even tho i was still at school)

Yes, it was an excellent series.

Barbara Flynn in one of her earlier roles.

The opening and closing music, plus images of the beach, very moving.

I enjoyed the bits I saw, I was a student and didn’t always have access to a TV. Not like the students of today!grin

Thanks for the heads up on that. I’d like to watch.

Notagranny44 Sun 26-Jan-25 13:52:34

Do you have to pay to see it please?

I discovered Barbara Flynn in the Beiderbecke trilogy (written by Alan Plater) and loved the whole series enough to buy VHS recordings of it, then DVDs (which I've watched so much that the soundtrack is wearing out). I didn't see A Family at War first time round, so thanks for the notification!

I have never watched "Family at War" but I looked it up on INDB just now and an amazing number of well known actors were in it. Surprising as it only ran from 1970 to 1972.

Among many others, were Benedict Cumberbatch's mother and one of the Dr Whos.

Moonwatcher1904 Sun 26-Jan-25 14:12:06

Thanks for that. I'm always looking for something to watch and I love period dramas.

Notagranny44 Sun 26-Jan-25 14:17:03

Oh, I found I can view it on watch.plex.tv on my PC for free!

Northernsoulnanna Sun 26-Jan-25 16:09:52

Glad you found it Not a granny44.
I love the old wartime dramas.
Just need someone to reshow The Sullivans now(Australian series shown on itv in the late 70s)
Anyone remember the Series We'll Meet Again (late 1980s)
Starting Suzannah York.
About the American G.I.S arriveing at the American Airbases (Norfolk/Suffolk)
I.m.o. was the best wartime drama ever shown.
Always so many repeats on T.V all the same ones being repeated.
So many old dramas could be reshown instead.

It’s on Freeview.

I wish they would show those old Bestsellers - The Thorn Birds, Rich Man Poor Man, Roots (the original and the newer version). I can think of a couple more such as Mistral's Daughter and Lace.
I'm sure they could turn one of those channels into one that would put these on. A lot of the channels have the same stuff on all day every day like they are on a loop.

Perhaps the networks would need to buy the rights first.

It was a wonderful series. If my memory is right I can remember having to go over to my grandparents the other side of town to watch the last episode as it was the 3 day week. My parents had no electricity that evening but my grandparents did. Would love to know if my memory is right! It was a long time ago.

welbeck Sun 26-Jan-25 18:35:35

I thought the power cuts of the 3 day week were in 1973 ?
Someone upthread said this series was broadcast 1970 to 1972.
Unless it was repeated ?
The very next year? Seems unlikely.
Perhaps you had local power cuts.

welbeck Sun 26-Jan-25 18:36:15

Talking Pictures is on Freeview channel 82.
Also online.

I am surprised at the date given above. I loved Family at War but in my mind I was at school when it was on and I was working in the early 1970s

Kate1949 Sun 26-Jan-25 23:07:57

Thank you. We will definitely watch it.

pinkprincess Sun 26-Jan-25 23:35:07

I saw this first time round.I was pregnant with my DS2 at the time, will defiantly watch it again.
Thankyou.

DanniRae Mon 27-Jan-25 07:12:09

I too was pregnant with my first baby when I first watched this. I remember snuggling down in bed after I had seen it, feeling very content. I even remember that the sheets were dark blue and had been a wedding present.
Such a happy time! smile

The theme music was from a Ralph Vaughan Williams symphony.

If you like vintage drama, have a look at Wessex Tales (Thomas Hardy) on BBc Player under Archive. All the old faces are there; even a rather young John Hurt.

love this series, especially the music. thank you NotaGranny44 for the info about plextv, i will be able to watch it.
Agree about some series such as The Sullivans, also Sons and Daughters, have never seen re runs of these on any service.

Definitely loved Family at War, brings back memories of watching it with my late mom. Another favourite was Tenco. Don’t watch much television now preferring to read. I think I lost the enjoyment of watching TV when I lost my hearing. I am now the lucky wearer of a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid but haven’t got back into the TV habit. I think I will make the exception now

Mojack26 Tue 28-Jan-25 14:09:33

Loved it
