Thought I’d start a new thread as the other one is full. Nothing to say really at the moment because I said it at the end of the last thread. Hopefully we can carry on with our Corrie moans!

Dee Dee's treatment was not a matter of ethnicity, the truth was that the maternity unit was extremely busy and nurses were pushed to their limit.
I think the male nurse in particular was very caring.
Haranguing the staff and bringing court cases will only escalate the problem.

Grannynannywanny Fri 04-Apr-25 08:47:59

Deedee has discharged herself from hospital just after major surgery and psychological trauma. It seems unrealistic that the first thing on her mind would be legal action when she’s currently struggling to function.

I have no knowledge of these circumstances but surely there would have been social worker involvement both at the hospital and now she’s at home. It was already established that the baby was for adoption at birth.

Then the decision was suddenly made that she would be handed over to uncle James who was now daddy and he was going to leave the hospital with her and get ready to travel to the U.S.

I don't think it's untrue, there are many cases of black women being treated differently in childbirth. Hopefully that is changing.

But she wasn’t being treated differently, that’s the point!

I don’t think it mattered what colour she was, she was rushed through because they were so busy and understaffed.

An earlier nurse made some comment about ‘people like you’ or similar, but to me, that was the only remark that sounded ‘off’.

Why isn’t Nurse Aggie being drafted in to help her family?

I know she and Ed split up, but this is an emergency!

Has anyone even rang her?

🤷‍♀️

Wethy General is certainly being kept busy by residents of Coronation Street these days.

Yes, it didn't suggest a hate crime or anything like it, more that she was ignored when she repeatedly said that things weren't right, and left to get on with it because 'women like you are made for childbirth' or whatever the comment was. Statistically, black women are far more likely to die in childbirth and postnatally than white women, and assumptions like those are a factor in that.

Dd and also my niece had terrible times in childbirth at hospitals that had insufficient and overworked staff. Another family member is a midwife who retired early due to dreadful pressures at work. These are dire times in maternity units.
Nothing to do with race.

Doodledog Fri 04-Apr-25 17:29:52

Why do four times as many black women die, in that case?

I don't know the answer to that, but there has to be one, and I think it's good that Corrie is highlighting the issue.

Aveline Fri 04-Apr-25 18:51:10

Maternal deaths in black women is three times higher and in Asian women twice as high. Overall maternal deaths have increased. Outrageous in a 'developed' country. Corrie focussing on the race angle is missing the point to make a drama out of it.

Exactly. Thanks, Doodledog

I don't think she was treated differently because of race, the staff were overworked and there were too few to deal with the amount of patients. It is a lottery that you get your child born with adequate care. So I think the airing of this subject is good but it's a very weak example as staff did their best in dire curcumstances there just isn't enough staff and it's frightening.
The reasons for black women more likely to die having a baby are complex, a major factor is roughly 70% being single and high proportion with no father support. Cultural and underlying health issues, such as weight and heart conditions etc and bad housing play a part. Young black men and women need to really be told of the risks earlier rather than later..

Aveline Sun 06-Apr-25 07:37:28

I agree. I don't think race came into it. The writers would be better looking at the whole topic. There's enough problems going in in maternity units throughout the country to sustain the story for weeks
As for the DeeDee angle. It's been a silly story all along and blatantly obvious what was going to happen.

Calendargirl Sun 06-Apr-25 07:47:37

I just wish Corrie would give over focusing on all these topical, worthy issues, as most of them are plain boring to the average soap viewer, who wants to have an hour of easy watching, not being depressed the whole time.

Calendargirl Sun 06-Apr-25 07:49:23

And by that, I realise we’ve seen some very worthy issues, i.e. Paul and his MND, but not all the time.

vegansrock Sun 06-Apr-25 14:57:17

Fact is there is a really high proportion of ethnic minority staff in hospitals so ethnic minority patients are unlikely to be singled out for worse treatment. There are other economic, social and cultural issues at play.

Are any of us surprised that Theo is married?

No, thought not.

I wonder how many children he has?

That ridiculous Lou and Gemma, off out drinking and swigging cocktails, the day before Ches and Gemma are meant to be off camping or whatever.

Most mums of five children would be getting ready for the holiday, packing clothes and provisions etc, maybe giving the house a clean and tidy up. But no, feckless Gemma off out drinking with her equally feckless ‘mate’.

Wherever do they get the money from?

BlueBelle Tue 08-Apr-25 07:05:39

And of course they re now starting on the Debbie line which is going to be horrendously silly I ll say no more don’t want to give anything away as I m not sure what’s out there or what’s been shown as missed one last week but they really need to do a bit more homework for this storyline

Aveline Tue 08-Apr-25 10:12:20

The Debbie story could be interesting though. Glad to hear that Dev is enjoying his time in India though. Time he was back.
Theo obviously got his teeth from the same place as Cassie.

Grannynannywanny Tue 08-Apr-25 10:43:02

No surprise at all that Theo is married. He remind’s me of the Barbie and Ken dolls my daughter had in the 1980’s with his chiseled and bronze physique.

The first scene the obnoxious new woman had was arguing in Dev’s shop about the price of nappies. Unless I’ve missed it her babies/toddlers have never been mentioned . I wonder where they leave them when they’re cavorting in the Rovers and leading dopey Gemma astray.

Calendargirl Tue 08-Apr-25 12:13:30

Yes, I’ve mentioned previously about the ‘price of nappy’ argument.

But so far, no sign of babies, toddlers, school children belonging to the ghastly new couple, although I thought Gemma knew her from the school gates originally?

Whatever, all their money must go on takeaways, beer and cocktails, not much left over for any kids.

I like the actress who plays Debbie Webster. She was completely pole-axed when told her symptoms could point to early onset dementia. It will be interesting to see how this storyline pans out. So many people think dementia only affects the elderly.

love0c Wed 09-Apr-25 18:36:07

I lkie Debbie too. A good actress and portrays a 'nice' character. Always good to have some of those ha ha. So many miserable people about, it is good to watch some kind characters. Even if they are not real!! ha ha.

lemsip Wed 09-Apr-25 20:58:35

I liked the scene with 'Debbie and Bernie' it was touching. a dreadful diagnosis for debbie if confirmed.

Calendargirl Wed 09-Apr-25 21:00:51

What a decent episode for a change!

Debbie’s acting was first class.

But the whole hour was interesting, sensible, believable.

Such a change, sadly quite rare though.

Aveline Wed 09-Apr-25 21:22:13

Another really good episode.
