Awful.
Attacked them by throwing hot cooking oil over them (beggars belief he was allowed access to that surely) then stabbed them with various implements.

Just now in the Telegraph:
“One of the Islamist terrorists behind the Manchester Arena bombing has allegedly attacked three prison officers with weapons and cooking oil in a high-security jail.

Two officers suffered life threatening injuries after being attacked in HMP Frankland in Durham by Hashem Abedi on Saturday, in a case that will raise questions about security measures in Britain’s prisons. Abedi is serving life for 22 murders in the Manchester Arena bombing.

The officers suffered burns and stab wounds when Abedi threw hot cooking oil over them before using home made weapons to stab the guards, the Prison Officers Association union said.

One of the officers was said to have been stabbed in the face and throat and had to be airlifted for emergency surgery at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. A second officer is still being treated in hospital. The third, a female officer, was released after treatment.”

Oh one of my neighbours works there .

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 12-Apr-25 20:30:08

Apparently it’s the 2nd time he’s done similar. He already had time added to his sentence for carrying out an attack on a guard in Belmarsh with two other terrorists.

His brother Salman died when he detonated the bomb killing 22 at the Ariana Grande concert here in Manchester in May 2017.

A close friend was governor grade there. Evidently, it’s a badly designed prison with ‘dead areas’ where staff can’t be seen. Additionally, in the high security estate, boiling water/sugar water and hot oil are a daily risk for staff and inmates.

Hashem Abedi is clearly a very dangerous man. Surely he will be charged with offences and any privileges will be lost from today.

Why was he allowed to get his hands on hot cooking oil?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 12-Apr-25 20:40:12

You’d wonder that - at the very least - wouldn’t you?

Iam64 Sat 12-Apr-25 20:42:42

As my governor friend said, cooking facilities a constant risk

Blinko Sat 12-Apr-25 20:43:38

Makes you think of the days when prisoners were kept manacled to a wall - and they didn't need to be particularly dangerous.

Why was he allowed to get his hands on hot cooking oil?

Was he working in the kitchen?
Hot oil? Knives?
Surely the prison staff should have more sense than to allow him access to such weapons?

I hope the prison officers will recover. ☹

Then prisoners ought not to be allowed to do it!
Sheesh.
Such liberties …

He’s been sentenced to 55 years.
Now he probably thinks ‘why not? what they gonna do to me anyway?’

He’s got nothing to lose has he?

Annapops Sat 12-Apr-25 20:58:40

I once taught there, part time, many years ago. Scares me when I think about it now. I do hope those officers will be OK, although it sounds like their injuries will be horrendous. What an evil man Abedi is.

Iam64 Sat 12-Apr-25 20:59:10

That’s right friedGreenTomtoes, nothing to lose and clearly a dangerous violent man. He conspired with other terrorist prisoners and attacked officers in Belmarsh prison where previously held.
Franklin takes high security prisoners. Where next I wonder

We, the public have to pay for this monster. How he came to be anywhere near hot oil or knives I don’t know, for the rest of his sentence keep him in a cell, if he destroys it let him live in it. Thoughts are with the people injured.

Then don’t let the swine near it!

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 21:23:52

Throw him in solitary.

Allira Sat 12-Apr-25 22:19:19

It beggars belief.

Is it because of his human rights that he is allowed near such potentially dangerous weapons as hot oil, knives? It was reported on the news that the knives were home-made. How?

Security needs to be tightened up for such prisoners even it means solitary for a very long time.

Toetoe Sat 12-Apr-25 23:31:40

Vile creature, sling him in to solitary for the rest of his sentence.

Sarnia Sun 13-Apr-25 07:57:47

He needs to be in solitary without privileges for the remainder of his sentence. I suppose some idiot lawyer will argue that would be against his human rights. I don't support capital punishment but something like this makes me reconsider.

Iam64 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:05:24

I don’t understand how a prisoner with this man’s history was allowed anywhere near hot oil.

love0c Sun 13-Apr-25 09:08:00

This is just the sort who should be in solitary! And your family have to pay for your upkeep. If no money available, then bread and water!

AGAA4 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:31:08

I don't understand how such a dangerous man was given access to weapons. Hot oil and knives can kill.
He was complicit in killing many innocent people some only children.
Who in their right mind allowed him to work in a kitchen.

Primrose53 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:40:54

What criminals like him need is to be imprisoned in a bulletproof glass “cage” for the rest of his life. Robert Maudsley, also known as Hannibal the Cannibal has lived in one for many years at (I believe) Wakefield Prison.

It’s no good giving him extra length to his sentence as he is already serving 55 years.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 12:43:40

Terrorists have all day and every day of sometimes exceptionally long sentences to observe staff, routines and weaknesses and carry out pre-meditated attacks. Prison staff dealing with them must be lucky every day, and that is an unacceptable burden.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 13-Apr-25 12:52:52

From the Mail:

“The prison officers are stable after receiving life-threatening injuries when they were assaulted by Hashem Abedi at HMP Frankland, County Durham, yesterday.”

Wyllow3 Sun 13-Apr-25 12:55:06

Not just terrorists - any violent prisoner as dangerous as him it has to be mostly solitary confinement/cuffing when the one hour exercise alone and so on.
