We didn’t have a TV for many years but I used to go to a friend’s house on Wednesday evening to watch what I think was Play for Today.
I think it was broadcast live, no recordings then.
This would have been around 1950.
I then ,about the same time, would go to another friend to watch the Quatermass Experience, or Experiment.
It was terrifying and I would run home, about 10 minutes away as if the Devil himself was after me.
I know these weren’t favourite programmes, just programmes I remember to this day.

As a young child: The Woodentops Popeye

Later: Ask the Family

Teenage years: The Frost Report

Not a children’s programme but I loved Frank Muir and Denis Norden in Call my Bluff in my teens.

The Magic Roundabout is still around I think; that used to be the end of our day and time to get ready for bed.

And finally (giving others a chance to post!) my most handsome, kind cowboy from the 1965 series. Swoon! I did, even at junior school.

Clint Walker as Cheyenne Bodie. A roaming cowboy doing good deeds along the way (natch).

I could sing you the song … if you insist …

“Cheyenne, Cheyenne, where will you be roaming tonight …”
🎶 🎵

I adored Clint Walker 🥰

Bill and Ben. And the tortoise whose name I forget.

Deedaa Sun 31-Aug-25 20:09:49

Champion the Wonder Horse for me. He was so beautiful!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 31-Aug-25 20:04:25

And “yabba dabba doo!”

The Flintstones! My favourite cartoon of all time as a child.

The Flintstones were the modern Stone Age family. Residing in Bedrock, Fred Flintstone worked an unsatisfying quarry job, but returned home to lovely wife Wilma and eventually daughter Pebbles. Fred, a big fan of golf and bowling, also enjoyed bullying neighbor Barney Rubble, while Barney's saucy wife Betty was best friends with Wilma.

I loved ‘Mr Ed’.

“A horse is a horse of course of course
And no one can talk to a horse of course.
That is of course unless the horse
Is the famous Mister Ed!
Go right to the source and ask the horse.
He'll give you the answer that you'll endorse
He's always on a steady course.
Talk to Mister Ed!“. 🎵 🎶

Oh, Mr Ed! That brings back the memories - when I was just a toddler, my parents used to take me a walk to fields near us where there were two horses. One looked just like Mr Ed and apparently that's what I used to shout as soon as I saw it.

TerriBull Sun 31-Aug-25 19:25:40

Top of the Pops, The Men from UNCLE, The Monkees, Crossroads grin so bad it was good.

Napoleon Solo? I liked The Man from Uncle, but my favourite was The Monkees.

Thank you, J52! 👍

Cumbrianmale56 Sun 31-Aug-25 19:16:41

Jason King, man in purple suits and cravats who is frequently sozzled on champagne or smoking a Sobranie cigarette manages to beat dangerous criminals every week. Peter Wyngarde was class in this.

The man from U.N.C.L.E.

David McCallum as Ilya Kuriakin was my crush, my friend preferred Robert Vaughn. I can't remember his character name.

I think that's where my love of spy stories/ movies began!
