I have just noticed in our tv guide that there is a new series starting tonight at 9pm on Channel 5.
Goody! I love this gentle series.
Rather poignant as it’s the first series for Samuel West since his father Timothy died last November.

Not just the theme tune, the cartoon drawn sequence as the opening titles.

It's such a joyous, feel-good gentle thing - I adore it!

I’m enjoying it too and glad it’s back. Gentle daily life from another era. I would just like to see Siegfried and Mrs Hall remain close friends and companions who support each other, I feel Siegfried is a confirmed batchelor. Like others who said they feared a new re-make could never be as good, I felt like that about Poldark, thinking the last version (a few years back now) could never match the original, but was pleasantly surprised- Aiden Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were a good match for Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees or Reece. Can’t remember what I did yesterday, but those names have just popped into my mind!

We love it too

It’s such a good feeling programme to watch

I watched the programme about making the original All Creatures (made some years ago) which was on BBC4 last night. My problem when I tried watching the new series was that so much seemed different from the books. Apparently when they were negotiating to make the original programmes James Wight's main stipulation was that nothing should be changed! The late Robert Hardy said that he thought it would be a failure because Townspeople would find it boring and country dwellers would find it annoying. Shows how wrong you can be!

ferry23

That's a shame Oreo - I was late to the party with this remake because I thought I wouldn't like it as I loved the first one, but now I almost think this one is better.

But then I'm a little in love with Siegfried grin

Hands off ferry23! 😁

Does anyone watch The Yorkshire Vet on Channel 5?
It features Skeldale Veterinary Centre where James Herriott worked.
Peter Wright, now working at Kirby Moorside, I think, worked with Alf Wight (James Herriott) and Donald and Brian Sinclair (Siegfried and Tristan).

Yes we watch the Yorkshire Vet Allira lovely series. It's a bit different since the Huddersfield practice joined but I'm quite enjoying the exotic animals they have on there.

Allira Mon 29-Sept-25 11:03:18

And The Greens! 🙂

lainieb56 Mon 29-Sept-25 17:57:52

I watched the first lot. Going back a while now. And I know this series is probably good, but I don't want my memory to be changed. So I haven't watched it

Lainieb56 Please give the new series a go, it's delightful. You are missing out on so much by avoiding it.

Definitely recommended!

We watched an old episode of Silent Witness on IPlayer the other day and there was an actress playing a sexy and quite unsavoury character. Thought she looked familiar and suddenly realised it was Mrs Hall! Not sure I’ll look at her in quite the same way again! 😳

DrWatson Sun 19-Oct-25 02:59:21

This a great show, easy listening on TV! Apparently the vet's house is filmed at Grassington -- do they still have that Victorian Xmas market?!

The cast are great, especially Mrs Hall, I recall the actress being in The Royal, in an early appearance, she had some presence there.

What a beautiful programme full of heartwarming stories and delightful characters. So sad that's the end of another series. I am not usually a fan of child actors but little Jimmy is great.

Pantglas2 Fri 31-Oct-25 06:21:21

We’re all elbowing one another to get at him Allira!

I don’t normally enjoy remakes if I’ve loved the first (Forsytes and Day of the Jackal spring to mind) but these actors have done it justice without a doubt, very well cast all of them…and then there’s Sam West 😘

Curlywhirly Fri 31-Oct-25 07:47:40

Love the programme. We went to Grassington (where the programme is filmed) last year; the locals were very welcoming and only too happy to point out the various buildings used in filming. The 'Drovers Arms' (I think IRL it's called The Devonshire Arms) has lots of wall-mounted photographs of the filming taking place. It's a lovely village with little independent shops and some good country walks.

merlotgran Fri 31-Oct-25 11:03:53

What a tear jerker last night.
Superb acting from Callum Woodhouse and Sam West and the boy playing Jimmy is just right for the part.

I’m always sad when the series ends.

ViceVersa Fri 31-Oct-25 11:20:12

Yes indeed, merlotgran. I thought Tristan's PTSD struggle was very well done indeed, especially as it's something which probably wasn't spoken out much at the time. So many poor souls must have suffered in silence.

JenniferEccles Fri 31-Oct-25 14:24:56

I can’t believe six weeks have passed since I started this thread! It seems like only a couple of weeks ago.
Sadly we had the last episode last night. Thursdays won’t be the same!

I wish there were more episodes per series and the tv critic in our newspaper agrees!
We can but hope!

Bukkie Fri 31-Oct-25 14:39:43

We do watch repeats on My 5 to keep us going.

Luckygirl3 Fri 31-Oct-25 15:36:56

It is such a gentle watch and a joy .....

JenniferEccles Fri 31-Oct-25 16:42:31

It is Luckygirl3.
An increasing rarity these days.

Visgir1 Fri 31-Oct-25 18:34:10

I have just seen, last night's episode. It's such a beautiful programme, so we'll acted.
Tristan's issue was so well done and touching, who wouldn't want to hug him.
I agree wish they would do more, but there will be a Christmas one to look forward to.

Boz Fri 31-Oct-25 20:43:30

My oh said at the end, the posh girlfriend looks just like Emma Thompson.
Not surprising as she is her daughter!

Gaia Wise is the daughter of Emma Thompson and Greg Wise.

A v.good actress in the making.
