Anybody see this last night?

I watched and although it was good to see something other than detective thrillers or reality programmes, I was rather disappointed.

I know some fantastic knitters and a couple of knitwear designers yet two tired looking elderly ladies were judges! Never heard of either of them and their comments were most odd.

The contestants seemed a nice crowd and clearly quite talented. Their first challenge was to knit a fair isle Tank Top in chunky yarn. Some really good designs and colour choices but a couple of people needed a bit longer to complete.

The second challenge was, as a group, to cover a sofa in knitting which should have the “wow factor”. Sadly that went down like a lead balloon. One group managed it but it was very dull. The other group’s effort was a disaster and looked an absolute mess. The two old dolls didn’t know what to say about that one. đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

Tom Daley as presenter was OK but draped in an assortment of multi coloured knitted adornments and a white skirt or kilt looked bizarre but that was probably the aim.

There was a very nice young woman in a pale green top who won Top Knitter last night and I predict she will win the contest eventually. Very talented and very modest. 👍

Allira
Just realised you asked about the candle houses. I don't have the patterns for them unfortunately but thought they looked really nice.

Allira Mon 10-Nov-25 21:23:51

Yes, they do, Millie22.

Just watching the dog coat episode, zipping through most of it quickly to get to the fashion show.

Oh dear, oh dear, those poor dogs look quite embarrassed and, in some cases uncomfortable.
I'm sure I heard one mutter that she'd called the RSPCA.

MayBee70 Mon 10-Nov-25 21:29:23

Iggys and whippets always look either worried or embarrassed.

Allira Mon 10-Nov-25 21:32:51

Ok, I'll take your word for it

But I'd be embarrassed if I had to wear something like that. 😀

I do think it is a great opportunity lost!!!! This show could have been a must for all knitters and should have been promoting knitting,

Surely, each week they should have had a short section on 'how to knit', explaining different stitches and different yarns.

Could have used life size models to display knitted items, all being made in appropriate types of yarn and using appropriate sized needles.

I am an experienced knitter, yet I had to look up what interstasia is (found that I actually do this with some types of designs and did not know it had a name!).

I understand that Tom Daley wanted to use the show to advertise his own new knitting designs and this was given (properly) a definite NO NO, by the producers. So, he seems to be getting his own back with wearing those ridiculous items. Does not reflect well on him!!!

Would like to see at least one young judge. By having those two older ladies it carries on the impression that knitting, etc is just for the elderly.

The first weeks fairisle should have been done with appropriate yarn and needles, as for the dogs outfits - well hated seeing how uncomfortable the animal was with those stupid hats - they gave their verdicts by shaking them off.

Wondering about next weeks - can remember the knitted two piece my Mum made for me back in the the 1940's. Could never go anywhere near the water in it.

Alie2Oxon Tue 11-Nov-25 13:32:04

My grandfather knitted! (He had relatives who were fishermen and sailors, which may have had something to do with it.)
He made me a large beret/tam-o-shanter... in purple and mustard.
I thanked him - but I'm afraid I didn't wear it.

Allira sorry didn't see your post . I don't knit but when I did I used the correct yarn for the pattern . I can understand why the Shetland knitters would be up in arms. It would be like knitting a fishmans jumper using the wrong yarn and pattern . Or calling a double knit jumper Aran when not made with Aran wool.

I’m surprised you found anything!
Did you mean intarsia ?

It’s on again tonight. More controversy. Animal charity PETA have complained that they should not have made dogs wear those knitted coats and hats.

No idea what they’re doing tonight.

Is it crochet tonight ? Wonder what kind of mess they can produce with that lovely craft

I think they are knitting swimwear tonight - very Famous Five-ish.
I did have a knitted swimming costume once upon a time. It weighed a ton when wet.

And then continuing the seaside theme they will be making deck chair covers.

I’m really sorry that, as a knitter and crocheter, I find this programme a waste of time and yarn.

Millie22 Sun 16-Nov-25 14:30:16

I shall watch it for the comic element as it's absolutely hopeless for knitting.

Tom Daley will probably feel he has to model again unfortunately.

PETA don’t agree with animals being used as pets. If they had their way most animals would no longer exist. You should see the outfits some of our much loved whippets iggys and greyhounds wear on our walks!

I had a knitted swimsuit too!
Terrible things.

When we were clearing MIL's house, I found a pattern for adult and child knitted swimsuits, which are still in my collection 😀

I've been struggling with my crochet this afternoon, but I bet theirs is worse!

I actually enjoyed it tonight. The winning swimsuit looked great and fitted well. The team challenge, as always, was daft and the end results over all were poor.

I thought it was unfair to expect people new to crochet to understand just how stretchy it can be. Entirely unsuitable for a deckchair which needs to be firm and supportive.

Good to see Jane Crowfoot tonight. I have been on a day course with her and she is very talented. She calls herself Janie Crow these days.

Allira my niece was the most uncrafty person ever. No interest at all. During lockdown she decided to give crochet a go and ended up making and selling loads of lovely stuff. She taught herself from the Bella Coco videos on YouTube. They might help you.

Yes, I learnt with Bella Coco during lockdowns too.

I have made a lot of blankets and probably wouldn't sell any but there is a limit to how many you can give to friends and family!
Working on a trellis design at the moment 🙂 and was concentrating on the border.

Sorry Allira, I thought you were new to crochet. đŸ€

Never mind that swim wear and deckchairs are not compatible for a reason. Who sat around a table and thought that’s a good idea to crochet things to do with the beach to be broadcast in NOVEMBER!
Surely they could have thought of Xmas gifts instead which are much more suitable . Maybe that’s to come.
My aunt knitted my cousins and me swimsuits. The shoulder straps stretched and left our chests exposed! Terrible when yr 13!!!!

Chardy Mon 17-Nov-25 14:45:16

Why didn't the men with the brilliant chip deckchair just undo the join to the front of the frame, join the frame to further up the crochet, and have a flapping rectangle at the front?

PaynesGrey Mon 17-Nov-25 16:25:12

I may have found a way to enjoy this show.

Record it so it isn’t interrupted by 12 minutes of advertising breaks. Make a cup of tea and leave the regular irritations in the kitchen: Tom’s silly outfits, Di and Sheila’s untidy hair, clothes and lacklustre comments. Accept that finding “Britain’s Best Knitter” is just a slogan. Some of the contestants aren’t very good at knitting and are even poorer at crochet.

I enjoyed yesterday’s show more than the first two weeks although I did find myself wondering why most chose to crochet the swimwear when it’s far easier to get smooth shaping around the body’s curvy bits with short row knitting.

The models were top competitive swimmers. Making bikinis was a mistake imo. Crocheting four triangles in twelve hours isn’t exactly challenging. The best designs by far were from Lydia and Ailsa who made swimsuits. I would have designed something with a racer back, as serious swimwear has.

As for the deckchair challenge, sag was always going to be an issue. Brave but also foolish of Holger and Isaac to crochet the deckchair in thin yarn. Good “chips” design but no strength. Aisla pulled Simon through.

Too many contestants over-relied on surface embellishment (rather than integral colourwork) which would make fabric lumpy to wear and sit on. Does anyone really want dangling fuchsia on a bikini, raised letters on their bottom or lumpy bits at their back when they sit on a deckchair wearing very little?

Right decision over winner and loser this week.

Good to see Janie Crowfoot. I’ve made several of her blanket designs: Lily Pond, Frida’s Flowers, Mystical Lanterns and Persian Tiles.

Alie2Oxon Mon 17-Nov-25 17:22:55

Thank you for putting in her name! I didn't catch it, and I was trying to get a good look at the shawl (?) that she was wearing, shall look her up.
Swimsuits of some interest. Wool all wrong for deckchairs!!

I liked it that Tom landed on the floor!
His outfits (not sure that either half of that word describes them) get weirder by the week.
