Christmas TV

I read online that some had previewed this year's listings with dismay!

Dad went and got us the weekly mag, apparently, Tesco doesn't have next week's in, in any version (We have TV Choice) so dad bought the one they did have, the Christmas one.

What a load of crap!

Last year, our TV and dvr box both died, so I replaced both (I do like to record and watch later, hence the dvr) and discovered BONES, bingwatched it, brilliant!

About a month ago, U released Elementary! With not having sky, never saw it when it was released and though it was released on Freeview many years ago, I only saw the 1st series. Let's just say I'm On Series 5 (though I have jumped to the finale to see the very last episode).

I must say that Jonny Lee Miller makes a divine!!! Sherlock Holmes! (I used to think that Jeremy Brett was the best SH, I now think JLM is!!)

Depends on your preferred viewing I suppose, we do stream some programmes.

I have just looked at the tv offerings for the next fortnight. What a pathetic lot of programmes on offer. So many repeats that it’s hard to find anything new and fresh. A couple of the films being shown are older than I am, and I was born in 1945!!

All I can say is, thank goodness our family plays games and does quizzes on the day and that we don’t rely on the tv for our entertainment! Happy Christmas everyone!🎄

I think we'll be doing a lot of reading...

Pittcity Tue 16-Dec-25 17:07:45

We treat ourselves to Apple TV and Netflix over Christmas.

Boz Tue 16-Dec-25 17:15:07

It's getting as if you don't pay you don't get much.

fancythat Tue 16-Dec-25 17:17:19

A relative told me the same. Nothing on!

shysal Tue 16-Dec-25 17:19:02

I was not impressed either! I have already recorded the film The Holiday to watch over the holiday period, and look forward to The Pottery Throwdown, Sewing Bee and new Traitors.

Boz Tue 16-Dec-25 17:26:24

The thing is, the young don't watch much TV. More interesting things via your ipad or phone. So long-term investment in TV progs. is not looking good.
So much drama is sexed up to try to lure them in. I'm not sure it does and it certainly irritates the elderly TV viewer.

dustyangel Tue 16-Dec-25 19:51:50

shysal I can’t record programmes but I sat down and made an occasion of watching The Holiday when it was on last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you do too.

Dd 2 has offered to send me photos of the daily Christmas programmes so that I can choose what I want to watch over the holidays.

We watch very little terrestrial tv.
90% of our viewing comes through Netflix, Apple TV, Disney+
National Geographic.
There’s lots of really good stuff on IPlayer. Then there are lots of films/ documentaries streamed on the tv’s own site.

Babamaman Wed 17-Dec-25 14:14:05

I googled the TV Christmas What’s on!
It’s horrendous! How poor can the tv programmers be!
It’s awful. Luckily the only tv I’ll be able to watch will be the Kings speech (all two minutes of it)

Rosiebee Wed 17-Dec-25 14:18:21

Big shout out for Elementary!! I've been recommending it for years - to blank looks - and we've now started again from the beginning.
Christmas Day seems to consist of soaps (don't watch) and quizzes. Repeats of old programmes and celebrity rubbish. Think I am turning a bit Grinchy. Boxing Day doesn't look much different.

WelshPoppy Wed 17-Dec-25 14:51:02

I'm looking forward to Call the Midwife and All Creatures Great and Small but that's it for me.

Sadgrandma Wed 17-Dec-25 14:54:25

I don’t know about Christmas as I haven’t looked yet but I looked through BBC1 and 2 programmes for today earlier and all but about two were repeats. This is what we pay our licence fee for! If Donald Trump wins his court case we will never, ever get any new programmes! I tend to watch things on IPlayer, most are old but they were much better programmes.

Ladyalice43 Wed 17-Dec-25 15:15:57

The Christmas tv this year is awful, some films go back as far as 1939. Also lots of repeats of rubbish.

Greyduster Wed 17-Dec-25 16:21:38

As others have said, the majority of my tv comes from Apple, Netflix and Amazon Prime. I do find some gems on iPlayer, though, usually hidden away “behind” another listing.

According to the weekend papers, the BBC's choice offering this year is Morecambe and Wise. I like Call the Midwife but rely mainly on Netflix, ITV and Amazon Prime - with occasional forays into Channel 4. I can't bear all the celebrity rubbish, though I do like the non-celebrity Bakeoff.
shysal says she plans to watch The Holiday - I watched this recently (on Netflix I think) and I love it.
I wonder how many people plan to give up their BBC licence if Trump defeats them in court and gets damages? Since I so rarely watch it now it would be no loss to me to give it up.

The licence fee doesn't just fund the BBC, it funds the platform from which we watch all these other things. People tend to forget this.

WithNobsOnIt Wed 17-Dec-25 19:42:53

Christmas tele has been dire for years
Have a butchers at youtube loads if old films and intersting stuff

theworriedwell Wed 17-Dec-25 19:45:46

So many channels. So little worth watching.

sassenach512 Wed 17-Dec-25 20:17:14

Every year is the same, lots and lots of repeats and programmes we see all the time anyway.
I've got a few books lined up for when despair gets the better of me

TiggyW Thu 18-Dec-25 03:12:49

SheepyIzzy - Sorry, but no-one beats Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. 😎
The best festive progs for me are the RI Science lectures and the New Year concert from Vienna.

Greciangirl Thu 18-Dec-25 15:20:42

I am really looking forward to All Creatures great and small.
Also Call the Midwife.

If I want to watch a decent film, then it’s Netflix.
Or Apple t.v.

Always something to watch on telly nowadays .

I think some people like having a good old moan about stuff.
And why not?

123kitty Thu 18-Dec-25 15:20:53

I used to laugh when four channels were available on uk tv; Americans used to moan that in USA there was nothing to watch (although they had about 40 options). Reading these posts it seems quantity doesn’t relate to watchable quality!
