Dawn French half hour play.. good so far

MayBee70 Thu 22-Jan-26 09:13:16

It’s had good reviews in the papers and most people on Mumsnet seem to like it ( although a few seemed to loathe it as much as I do).

I usually like Dawn French but not a fan of this. I’ve watched three but won’t bother with the rest

Sago Thu 22-Jan-26 08:36:19

Had to endure 10 minutes of this whilst waiting for the news.

It was absolute tripe.

MayBee70 Thu 22-Jan-26 03:09:06

It reminded me of the things I didn’t like about Little Britain, weeing and vomiting isn’t funny, just creepy. I was finishing off the series tonight and somebody started projectile vomiting in it just as I was having a cup of tea and some toast. I wasn’t amused.

Like others, I watched the first episode and thought it was dreadful. It wasn't funny.
I find Dawn French quite irritating. I always thought French and Saunders was self-indulgent, unfunny tripe, and completely over-hyped.
Mark Heap's talents are wasted in this.
Lots of friends have remarked they thought it was disappointing too.

On the list. Mark Heap is always worth watching.

I remember him in Lark Rise to Candleford 😀

Have recorded this but not watched it yet so can't give an opinion.

For me, neither funny or subtle. I think Dawn French, on her own, is just too much. Too much 'gurning', doing that letterbox thing with her mouth, all just too obvious ... and a poor script.
I wanted so much to like it; very disappointed.

seadragon Wed 21-Jan-26 21:45:52

Never been a fan of Dawn French's stuff and the clips of this new 'comedy' did nothing for me.

MayBee70 Wed 21-Jan-26 21:20:31

I’ll finish watching it but think it’s awful. Black comedy has to be a bit subtle; too many ‘jokes’ about wee and poo for my liking. I stuck with it because my daughter found it funny and we usually like the same programmes. Going to watch series two of Daddy Issues when I’ve finished this one.

I loved it!
Actually laughed at some of it which is rare for me.

Ellie Anne Sun 11-Jan-26 19:39:18

I gave up half way through

keepingquiet Sat 10-Jan-26 22:49:31

I gave it a go but when she put the big bag of money on the table and said she'd insisted on cash I just turned over- there's funny, and there's just plain silly...

Bukkie Sat 10-Jan-26 14:02:45

Recorded it so will give it a try. Dawn French was brilliant as the Vicar of Dibley. Not so keen on the French and Saunders show.

Not decided on this yet. Can't stop thinking what would happen if he did die! Will give it a go for another episode.

😁I hadn’t thought of that!

Watched but wasn’t impressed really daft.

Basgetti Sat 10-Jan-26 13:24:48

On the list. Mark Heap is always worth watching.

Usedtobeblonde Sat 10-Jan-26 10:18:29

I didn’t think much of the first episode but decided to persevere as things often get more watchable.
Sad to say this didn’t, it got worse, a disappointment but DF just can’t help acting like a female buffoon as she did in The Vicar of Dibley and the M&S Christmas ads.

Slimswim

Found it absolutely awful, watched ten times and gave up.

Did you mean ten minutes?

I had recorded this, and after reading comments on here, did watch the first episode. Did not 'recognise' Dawn French at all.

Did make me thing about the true life story of the man and his wife who staged his death in the sea, and then he lived in the flat next door to his house, whilst the claim on his life insurance went through.

Sure that real story provided the basis for this. After the one episode, not sure of it. Did not actually laugh out loud at any point, but it was an 'easy watch', so will see how I feel after the next episode.

Maggiemaybe Sat 10-Jan-26 09:45:24

I’m not a big Dawn French fan, but I thought this was quite funny. Funny enough to give it another try, anyway.

Looks like you and I are in the minority haha grin

GrannyGravy13 Sat 10-Jan-26 08:34:04

I felt rather underwhelmed and disappointed, not sure I will bother watching any more.

Aveline Sat 10-Jan-26 08:14:44

Just not funny. Gave up on it.

Astitchintime Sat 10-Jan-26 08:07:53

The decor in the house was enough to put me off……….Dawn French did often seem to blend in with the wallpaper. I persevered with the first episode but didn’t bother with any more.

Oreo Sat 10-Jan-26 08:00:51

It had the bones of a plot to be funny and I like both main actors but somehow it misfired.I did watch all of it and found some lines amusing.
