I like this book and the mini series staring Jenny Seabrook is being re-made starring Brenda Blethyn in the main role and Jo Joyner as her daughter, two of my favourite actors and will look forward to it.

Main role shared so BB only place the older role.

I loved it as an easy watch. I’m not particularly critical of TV content so just sit back and watch. If I don’t like it, I switch off.

Watched about 3 minutes and gave up.

I gave about 15.
Everything was wrong. Bad script, bad type casting, no 2 people in the same family had the same accent.
That’s why The Other Bennet Sister is so good: attention to detail.

I read the book first time around and loved the original tv version.
Rewatched the Jenny Seagrove adaptation at Christmas ( it was good but not as I had remembered it) and now have watched the new one.
Must say I quite liked the new version in many aspects 😀

It was utter rubbish the first time round.

I'm really enjoying it so far, the actress playing Emma is so lovely. Didn't see the Jenny Seagrove version so nothing to compare it with.

Glad you're enjoying it, Jane. I didn't expect to, but I loved it 🙂.

I'm on episode 7...I quite like it.

Watched about 3 minutes and gave up.

I've just finished watching all 8 episodes on ch.,4, catch up.

I must say that some of the content in the first 2 were not quite 'my type of thing'!! But from then on the story got me more interested.

I did like Emma's brother, Frank.
Also Edwina, (Emma's daughter), although I much preferred the cute, very young Edwina, (4/5y.ish?) to the older one, (60ish?). !!

After watching the last one, I was left wanting to know what happens next! Any news of another series?

I vaguely remember the older version, and wasn't that impressed by it then. I haven't watched Brenda Blethyn's interpretation but, although I think she is a great actress, I think perhaps the story is a bit old-fashioned.

I am enjoying it. BB will always be Vera to me though.

MayBee70 Mon 16-Mar-26 21:54:12

I was going to give it a miss but it had a good review on Must Watch so I’ll give it a go. They did say it was a bit Dallas’y but that’s good given that I’m avoiding heavy stuff at the moment.

I didn't watch the original, neither did I read the book; far too close to Catherine Cookson. I watched the first episode, and although it was good to look at it was so hackneyed: feisty maids, rampant privileged sons and poor but honest estate workers; I was desperate for Brenda Blethyn to return.

J52 Mon 16-Mar-26 12:09:09

Hmm, not sure about it. Only watched 2 episodes so far. Is Brenda Blethyn stuck on her ‘Geordie’ accent?
She does well for 80 though.

Caleo Mon 16-Mar-26 11:43:21

I don't recommend this series because the main protagonist is tediously two-dimensional------cardboard cut-out of a character.

Doodledog Mon 16-Mar-26 11:00:16

PS, Judge John Deed is on U just now, and definitely bears a rewatch. It's a bit dated in places, but on the whole it's still very enjoyable (or I think so, anyway!)

Doodledog Mon 16-Mar-26 10:58:37

I read the book and vaguely remember the first series, but don't think I'll watch this one. I might binge all of it if I'm ill, and need an easy watch, but otherwise it doesn't sound like my thing.

I can't understand the Jenny Seagrove love at all. She is very pretty, but her acting is wooden. She played Jo Mills in Judge John Deed, and all she seemed to do was flash her eyes and storm off in a strop. Some of the stories were very emotional, and Martin Shaw managed to get a balance between 'stern judge who has to keep to the law' and 'real man with a caring side', but JS just didn't.

TerriBull Mon 16-Mar-26 10:43:38

I'm still enjoying it. I'm at the stage where Emma has had baby Edwina with an eye for expanding the business. It's hard at this stage, episode 4, to see how she will morph into an angry backcombed haired BB striding the corridors of her large corporation. BB a far cry from Vera, kitted out in a 1970s, Chanel type power suit barking orders to staff members attired in flared trousers and big collars.

Patsy70 Mon 16-Mar-26 09:05:31

Really enjoying it, especially the young Emma, but don’t like Brenda Blethyn at all, and never watch anything that she’s in.

TerriBull Sun 15-Mar-26 20:30:16

I've watched three episodes now, and am enjoying it given I have no expectations, not having read the book or seen the first series Although she's been a well established actress for years, I associate Brenda Blethyn as Vera complete with hat!

TheSunRisesInTheEast Sat 14-Mar-26 21:18:33

I binge watched the whole series last night (8 episodes I think), got to bed at about 2am, it was brilliant, I really enjoyed it 👍

Ferry 23. Thanks for that. Appreciated.

Oh , why oh why do we have to have these full on sex scenes ,just not necessary. I am watching but having watched the original drama I prefer that . I would be horrified if my young granchildren were watching with me . Not necessary

Thought it pretty tame. Guessing GoT isn’t your thing 😁

Toetoe Fri 13-Mar-26 22:40:05

My granchildren are 15 and 19 and I would still be uncomfortable watching these sex scenes with them .

To all Brenda Blethyn fans I thoroughly recommend the 2000 film Saving Grace

I thought she was brilliant in Secrets and Lies. Well worth a watch.
