The Benny Hill Show

Always a controversial one when I was growing up in the eighties. Hill's fans saw him as a near the bone comedian whose chase scenes with young women, risque jokes, silent sketches , calypsos, and lingerie clad dancers were good entertainment. Also Hill could point to his show topping the ratings when a new one was show.
OTOH Hill's growing band of critics saw him as a an embarassment and called out the show for its sexism, using women as sex objects, and behaving like a dirty old man. People from Ben Elton to Nina Myskow were calling for the show to be banned, and ITV finally called time on the show in 1989.
My view is, I enjoyed Hill more in the seventies and early eighties, when he did have some really good sketches and co stars, but he ran out of ideas by the mid eighties and should have quite while he was still good.

Just because you don't like someone does not give you the right to say they are pervs snd creeps.
People who knew him, as stated on here, said he was quiet and respectful. His comedy was of a different era, it would not be tolerated today.
I saw last of the summer wine one day when I was in, and before the programme started they apologised for some of the things seen in the episode that would be unacceptable by today's standards.

I couldn’t agree more,I found him rather sleazy

missdeke Mon 09-Feb-26 17:09:48

Couldn;t stand the man, he was not funny at all, just a grubby minded schoolboy who never grew up.

I found him creepy but it was his on screen persona not the actual man, whom by all accounts was not at all like his on screen persona, thank goodness.
I think is ok to find the way someone portrays themselves on screen as being unpleasant as long as we know that is not the real person.

A friend of mine was a floor manager for the Benny Hill shows, and always said he was a gentleman, the girls were often staff on set ( including my friend) who were in the scenes and it was always good fun on set. She never heard of anything untoward and no-one had a bad word to say about him! Suspect it was just of it's time at the time, and times change

Your perfectly correct, it was of it’s time just like many tv programs/ films.

Loved Benny Hill and Dick Emery...oh you are awful lol. Still funny today

I liked Benny Hill though sometimes he felt Alitalia stood sexist. However, despite all today’s virtue signalling I think there is far more sexism now

Used to love George & Mildred.

I sometimes watch it now (on one of the obscure channels), and find it funnier than I used to back in the day - Brian Murphy had great comic timing

We traveled a lot on business in Germany in the 80’s, it seemed that every hotel and bar would be showing Benny Hill, to much laughter and joshing! We thought it was funny watching what people made of him. But at the same time hoping they didn’t think all Englishmen were the same.

If you watch Benny's shows up to 1984, a lot of the humour and the sketches are very good, and the semi silent sketches with the sped up camerawork remind me of the greats of silent comedy. Then came a decline, where you could tell Benny was running short of matetial and by the late eighties, his humour was weak and dated. Also the shows were becoming expensive fot Thames to make and losing viewers.

He did yes. Yootha Joyce was so good too.

It was innocent humour of its time. Prefer that to the endless scenes these days of couples copulating.
So many people these days must be voyeurs. Now that is creepy.

Mibsxx- I remember many years ago watching a tv interview with one of his regular "girls" who said she had to perform a sex act on Hill to ensure a role on his next series. Sadly, her name escapes me.

This was a story from 50 years ago that seemingly was the only one that suggested Hill behaved inappropriately and came out long after he died. All the other women on the show have said what a gentleman Hill was and they always felt safe around him. In real life, he was scared of women and only had a couple of short relationships.

Benny Hill.
Perv and a Creep

An unpleasant comment.
What evidence do you have for that, other than your opinion?

He made my flesh creep and the programme was rarely watched. Carry On films never amused me either. Like my humour to be more subtle

Spot on, todays tele is filthy mouths and offensive shows, all near naked, yet they think benny hill was bad, it's a mad world we have created

I don’t understand this. Am I missing something?

It’s likely predictive text 😂 we could have a guess?

TV in the 70s was brilliant, so much funnier than the so-called comedy of today. Benny Hill, Dick Emery, Carry-Ons, Freddie Starr, The Comedians etc. I loved Miss World too, as a little girl I'd watch in awe at the beautiful women and aspire to look like them when I grew up!! Everything is about political correctness now, always worrying about who will be offended, personally I find all the effing and blinding on TV more offensive than anything that was said or done on TV in the 70s. Sometimes I'll catch On The Buses, Man About The House or Bless This House on the TV, and I love it!!

This. (Except for the Miss World bit) I enjoyed watching it but I never aspired to be in it).
There are so many people who are ready to take offence nowadays.
In the seventies, people watched these programmes, laughed at them and then got on with their lives.

Jacksgrandma123 Tue 10-Feb-26 09:07:14

Yes, predictive text: the bane of my life ( though I should have checked before posting! ). I meant to write that he at times could be a little too sexist , particularly towards the end of his career

Oreo Tue 10-Feb-26 09:09:44

Aw gosh Jacksgrandma123 I was hoping for something more exciting!

Tuliptree Tue 10-Feb-26 09:12:22

I can vaguely remember watching the show and certainly laughing at the speeded up scenes. Of course it wouldn’t be made today and that’s because we’re more aware of issues around that type of depiction of women . It’s not about ‘taking offence’ but about what’s appropriate and acceptable.

JackyB Tue 10-Feb-26 09:16:32

Ernie the fastest milkman in the West was always a favourite of my kids'. Although they probably didn't get any of the innuendos (at the time)

Clawdy Tue 10-Feb-26 09:18:47

I remember years ago Ben Elton saying how inappropriate to have the opening scene with a middle aged man chasing young women. It was pointed out to him that it was the other way round, the women are the chasers! Ben did admit he'd not spotted that!
