The Benny Hill Show

TV in the 70s was brilliant, so much funnier than the so-called comedy of today. Benny Hill, Dick Emery, Carry-Ons, Freddie Starr, The Comedians etc. I loved Miss World too, as a little girl I'd watch in awe at the beautiful women and aspire to look like them when I grew up!! Everything is about political correctness now, always worrying about who will be offended, personally I find all the effing and blinding on TV more offensive than anything that was said or done on TV in the 70s. Sometimes I'll catch On The Buses, Man About The House or Bless This House on the TV, and I love it!!

You have to admit tho, that the coach that disgorged its passengers for the loo at various locations in time to fast music and back on the coach was pretty 🤣 I can hear that music in my head now.
I never liked Benny Hill himself, yes def creepy.

Loved Rising Damp, Porridge, Man About The House, Morecambe & Wise and The Two Ronnies.
Never liked Dick Emery either.

I wasn't a fan of Benny Hill nor any of the risqué comedies. The 70s had many such. Are you being served, Dick Emery and even The Two Ronnies stand out.

Love Stanley Baxter, Dave Allen, Mike Yarwood. I Didn’t like BH, or FS, too smutty for my taste.
Went to see Chubby Brown in the nineties. I didn’t like his sense of toilet humour, left after twenty minutes. I believe he’s supposed to be a nice, pleasant guy in real life,

A lot of 70s comedy was purient and sleazy. I felt it then and won't watch it now for the same reason.
Benny Hill was in there among it all and he wasn't funny.

I think because Benny Hill was the most popular comedian on television 50 years ago, with his shows attracting 20 million viewers, that I decided to sound out people on here.
There is a film of Benny Hill clips from his early Thames years that is sometimes shown on ITV3, and this actually shows him as quite a clever comedian. The send ups of Dee Time, the wishing well sketch, the comedy calypso songs and a hilarious interview with Henry Mc Gee as a film director are well worth a look.
I think the dirtier humour appeared in the late seventies when Benny obbained a new producer. Problem was Benny was well into middle age by then and it was becoming a bit embarassing. There were still some great sketches like the send up of Kenny Everett and the Nazi traffic wardens, but women were starting to find Benny ogling scantily dressed young women embarassing. By 1985 he was running out of material and I stopped watching his shows, like millions of other viewers.

In the late 60s my husband was working for a TV props company and spent a lot of time on the Benny Hill Show, especially the location shots with all the chases. He always said it was great fun and the girls never had a problem with him. He wasn't a lover of TV comedy and Benny's was one of the few he would watch.

A friend of mine was a floor manager for the Benny Hill shows, and always said he was a gentleman, the girls were often staff on set ( including my friend) who were in the scenes and it was always good fun on set. She never heard of anything untoward and no-one had a bad word to say about him! Suspect it was just of it's time at the time, and times change

All the Hill's Angels adored him. Rheyvall agreed that he was quiet, polite and respectful of them and many attended his funeral to pay their respects. He was a very clever wordsmith

Yes, I have heard there was never any inappropriate behaviour on set and Benny did leave money in his will to some of the women on his show.
Actually, his private life is quite interesting. Benny never had a long term female partner and was very shy towards women. He also, despite the millions he made from his television show, had a very modest life, not owning a car and living in a modest flat in Teddington. I think the only luxuries Benny enjoyed were foreign holidays to counties where he was little known and fine wine.

My fav. was the sketch with BH as a Teddy boy with his girl enjoying some chips to the music "feed the birds, tuppence a bag, tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag".

I suppose Benny ended up like Sid James, a middle aged man chasing after young girls, in carry on films I found it absurd that any nubile young woman would find a grizzled older man like Sid attractive.
