Anyone watching? Quite enjoying it so far!

Yes Martav/Taurus.
I loved the way Darcy was made to look other than handsome.

That was the one thing I didn’t like, Darcy lives in my head as very handsome indeed.
Otherwise I’m enjoying it so far, I think it gets into what Mary’s thoughts might have been quite well. In the original book everybody was very dismissive of her, so I can see that from her perspective her parents in particular would come over as they do in this version.

I thought Darcy was supposedly very handsome and aristocratic-looking.

SorryRosiesMawagain. I just don't agree with you. This is now. Then was then and it wasn't right either. Maybe you'll be OK with a white Nelson Mandela obviously, it'll be 'acting' so that's OK with you.

Just had a peek.

Rather nice .....

I binge watched it and was very disappointed that it stopped at the end of episode 5 when there are apparently 10 episodes - frustration!

Same here!
The next series is due on the 29th March, J52 posted yesterday.
Not long to wait! 😊

Maremia Tue 17-Mar-26 10:42:42

It was a jolt at first. That's Darcy! And then I thought, fair enough.

V3ra Tue 17-Mar-26 10:44:28

Audiences will need to wait until Sunday, 29 March, when the final five instalments arrive on BBC iPlayer, also launching at 6am.

In fact if you're really keen, you could get up early and watch over breakfast!

Not sure how using a mixed race cast makes a production 'superficial'.

Ditto!

Nelson Mandela's character and reputation would survive any physical appearance. If Nelson Mandela's
acts were faithfully portrayed by a man with no face then Mandela character would still show a superlative human being.

Maremia Tue 17-Mar-26 12:05:58

That comment about The One Show, think it was MT, isn't that a case of life imitating art? It's exactly what would have happened to Mary.

J52 Tue 17-Mar-26 12:44:08

Caroline Bingley was also meant to be a beauty in the book. In this production. No insult to Tanya Reynolds who plays her, but the character is a bit sharp faced and not attractive in my opinion.

Oreo Tue 17-Mar-26 12:50:51

I think Caroline Bingley came over in the book as beautiful but very cold in countenance and with a haughty air.
Am loving this series, only two episodes to go now.

Of course it wouldn’t .
Being black in a country with apartheid is central to Mandela and it wouldn’t be ludicrous for him to be played by anyone but a black actor.

Oreo Tue 17-Mar-26 12:54:03

Would not wouldn’t…predictive text🤬

Oreo Tue 17-Mar-26 12:55:08

How could anyone think Mandela could be portrayed by a white actor?

Oreo Tue 17-Mar-26 12:57:19

Darcy wasn’t handsome at all in this series disappointingly, we have all been spoiled by seeing Colin Firth🤭

Hi, yes.
It was very noticeable that Ella B didn't get much of a look in. The other rather elegant actress (??) got the coverage and she did all the talking. Then Sarah Beeny prattled on about how Ella should find herself a "camping room" in her new house in which to chill out while the works were being done.
They did treat Ella rather dismissively. I wanted to hear more about the part she played.

But then The One Show is a pretty superficial programme anyway. I'm not sure why I watch it really, but it fills in time before Eastenders!!

MartavTaurus Tue 17-Mar-26 13:33:00

The One Show line up, incase anyone wonders what we're on about!

You clearly didn’t read my post to the end @ Aveline
Hard as it may be for some, I think we have to look beyond skin colour unless it significantly impacts the plot - or if a real ie historical figure is being depicted

At the time of writing, as they say, Nelson Mandela was a real, historical character hmm

Aveline Thu 19-Mar-26 08:41:11

Of course I did RosiesMawAgain. I foolishly thought you might have got my point though. Clearly not.

Oreo Thu 19-Mar-26 08:43:55

Just be relieved these days that the Bennet sisters are truthfully portrayed as white British.

MartavTaurus Thu 19-Mar-26 09:04:43

😆

Though if we want to delve further, Ella B is half Italian! Father 🇮🇹
She does have a Latin look about her.

Useless information alert ........
Talking British. Did you know the Princess of Wales is related to Jane Austen?

I think I might have heard that (but forgotten it)

11th cousin, six times removed apparently 😁

Ah, how interesting. It's quite easy to imagine Katherine and William as Jane and Mr Bingley smile

Patsy70 Thu 19-Mar-26 14:27:52

I’m really enjoying the book, so will watch on iPlayer when I’ve finished.
