Finished it today and I loved it too. I can't help thinking Mrs Bennett was just a bit too spiteful to Mary though. But what on earth happened to Darcy? he didn't utter a word and hid behind his newspaper when he wasn't having a 'seasonal headache' and escaping from the family gatherings. I know he couldn't stand Mrs Bennett but surely as a man of decorum, he wouldn't have shunned all of the visitors, he'd have made the effort for good manners sake?

And he looked hideous!

aggie

I thought it was awful , what am I missing ?

It’s ok - people like different things.
(I wasn’t too impressed by the film Hamnet, but it got rave reviews)

Ditto re Hamnet the book …thought the film ending better than the book tho!

is it ok to watch if I am it depressed? confused

Definitely, I would say yes, but you have to see it through to the end to really enjoy it.
Also re Mrs Bennett being too harsh, yes certainly re the original book, but the end chat with Mary did explain a lot!

I enjoyed most of it but was disappointed that Mary's understanding of and relationship with Mr Collins was so rushed. In the book it is a slow and more sensitive development.
Also it is different when Mary stays with Lizzie,Mr D'Arcy and his sister

JamesandJon33 Tue 31-Mar-26 17:28:32

Lizzie was like a school teacher.
Lydia had a really artificial baby bump
Mr D non existent.
Love the story of Mary and well cast and acted I thought

God helps us. Is this the first of a torrential of spin offs from books based on classic novels?

AI and Chat box will have a field day.
How about

Little Women - Their Female Cousins

A Midsummers Nights Dream - The Life of the Minor Characters.

I have only watched the first 5 episodes so have not read all the comments for fear of spoilers - but I am really enjoying it! The actor playing Mary is really very good. More series like this would suit me in preference to series where there is death and violence!

Aely Tue 31-Mar-26 17:53:57

I have been finding it most enjoyable.

Did anybody else notice that in the early episodes "Hills", the Bennett's housekeeper, was played by Lucy Briars? She played Mary Bennett in the 1995 (Colin Firth) version of Pride and Prejudice.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.

I love period pieces. The costumes, the furniture.
Just everything about this series is charming.

Or like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead? grin wink

Surely this is/was purely for folk who'd overdosed at some point on Jane Austen, then discovered they could get a quick fix from this opportunistic add-on? Why would this modern show risk showing viewers that they couldn't get anyone to remotely match either of the Darcy leads (2005 film, or BBC series 10 years earlier) let alone the rest of those stunning casts?
### NB For anyone who likes historical drama, the Talking Pictures channel is now showing a re-run (Sats) of The Duchess of Duke Street, a terrific series.

No.
Why would you think that?

Or like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead?

Which is a brilliant play!

The costumes are on display at Dyffryn National Trust, near Cardiff

It's a lovely contrast to all the gritty police procedurals we're more often offered on TV

Yes - absolutely! Too much of those police dramas on TV for my taste. I loved the Other Bennet Sister and have seen all 10 episodes now. Superb acting, great characters, good story and I loved every single second. No spoilers from me, but it concluded well.

Loved it, sheer escapism and quite delightful.

We don't always need AI - Louisa May Alcott has already written her own "spin offs" or sequels to Little Women - they are Good Wives, Little Men and Jo's Boys.

I've just watched the final 4 episodes - what a lovely story and a great adaptation.

I've never seen Lark Rise to Candleford, is it on iPlayer? I'll have to check that out.

With all the doom, gloom and uncertainty in the world, it's good to be transported back in time. Modern life can be draining 🫤.

Lark Rise To Candleford is now on All4, it has previously been paid for on Prime.

I don’t watch much TV but I thoroughly enjoyed this series

Jane43, since your earlier recommendation for Lark Rise to Candleford, I found it on iPlayer and I've been enjoying watching it. I'm up to episode 7 of the first series 🙂.

Just watched the last episode, it was all a joy to watch😍

I don't like JA at all. This was recommended to me and it's completely charming. A welcome relief from the horrors of the news.
