Finding it quite gripping, will be watching second one tonight. As always, some improbable bits, but Joanna Scanlon is always good. Interesting to see Robert Lindsay too!

Calandergirl I too think Joanna Scanlan was miscast surely the average mother would be unable to string two words together with fear and worry most would be in tears the whole time, not toddling off doing detective work with so little emotion.
When the ‘lover’ died it was almost ‘oh dear what a shame’
I think it has been totally unbelievable and weak
I thought it was going to be good when it started it had promise but downhill all the way, very disappointing .

The clips shown to advertise the program was enough for me.
As BlueBelle pointed out you would be beside yourself if your child was missing, not running around like a would be Miss Marple.

Do you know what, I too thought that the mother's reaction and behaviour were completely unbelievable. Where's her distress and franticness? Surely you could hardly speak or stand up initially?

She seemed to spending a lot of time sitting at a table outside the hotel drinking wine.

My understanding of exchange visits for students is that it have them a chance to experience the culture, and practice their language.
How odd, then, to choose a place where everyone speaks excellent English.

Totally agree, what happened to the students when the teacher was detained. All conveniently forgotten. Was everyone at the school in England not informed?
The end twist was a good one, but let down by the many ‘holes’ on the way.
If I’d had a child on the exchange and they’d phoned me with the details, I’d have flown out to take them home!

I agree Bluebell absolute rubbish. Terrible acting, silly plot, mis-casting. The mother really annoyed me .

cornergran Fri 17-Apr-26 22:26:31

We agreed, five hours of our lives we’ll never get back. Such a shame as the beginning was promising.

I’ve given up on these Channel 5 dramas now. This latest daft one was the final straw !

harrigran Sat 18-Apr-26 00:06:21

Poor acting and too much bad language.

Was I the only one who uncharitably rather hoped that in the stand off between Virginie and Jerome, when he threatened her with a gun, then silly Sarah leapt out of the car brandishing a phone and yelling that she was recording it all, that Jerome would just turn and ‘Bang!’…..

And Sarah would be lying on the ground, thankfully putting us all out of our misery.

Was it ever explained why her lovely daughter became a hard drinking, drug taking, bar wrecking harridan the minute she left her mum’s side?

🤷‍♀️

There is another Channel 5 Drama coming up, ‘Number One Fan’, starring Jill Halfpenny and Sally Lindsay.

Need I say more?

😂

Both good actresses Calandargirl I ll give it a go and hope it’s better than this totally unbelievable tosh

Desdemona Sat 18-Apr-26 09:00:40

More holes than Swiss cheese but I did enjoy it and watched the whole thing over 2 nights.

sixandahalf Sat 18-Apr-26 09:09:55

Channel 5 must have some sort of deal where they offer good actresses some guff that might appeal to a certain demographic.

JS is a fantastic actress who demeans herself with this.

I couldn't get past the cleaner with fluent English!

JenniferEccles Sat 18-Apr-26 09:55:35

I much prefer your ending Calendargirl!

Yes there was no explanation at all about the daughter’s apparent complete change of personality.

I try to look through the obvious plot holes in these TV dramas and just accept that while I know that wouldn't happen in real life I must just go with the flow.

That process worked for me for the first 2 episodes, it got a bit tested in episode 3, but episodes 4 and 5 rather blew it out the water.

Virginie was a push over, every time Sally said "I'm coming with you" Virginie then said no, Sally said yes I am and off they trotted together. Stopping for wine now and then.

"Sorry I couldn't rescue you from your kidnapper sooner darling, but we were just testing out the new season's Chateau Neuf du Pape"

It was all so unbelievable at the end that it felt a bit silly.
