I am not enjoying the show. Bradley Walsh is taking my enjoyment out of watching it by asking for Royal recognition. It is not funny

We turned it off. All the performers were awful.

Luckygirl3 Sun 17-Dec-23 21:36:30

I only watched a bit - I had to look up who Walsh was! - and several other performers!!

crazyH Sun 17-Dec-23 21:39:52

The acrobatic performers were excellent !

To think that the Royal Family have to put in an appearance and actually look as if they’re enjoying it!
Respect!

I thought it was better than usual this year. A bit heavy on the musicals but it was lovely to see the incredible pianist Lucy playing a duet with Lang Lang.

Callistemon21 Sun 17-Dec-23 22:56:52

We watched some of the second half.

Lucy and Lang Lang were very good, I liked Rick Astley and the song from Blood Brothers with Mel C.

But on the whole not the best show I've seen.

bradley walsh was dire, what ever was he thinking. not at all funny so turned over.

I sat watching and didn't laugh once , the cameras kept panning to the audience who were laughing and smiling and clapping and I asked myself am I strange because I didn't find him or the other comedians funny . It had its good parts though . Was Cher miming ? I think she was but isn't she wonderful . I'll forgive her for miming .

William was laughing so much and wiping his eyes so why wasn't I!

Bradley was a total embarrassment. I found more enjoyment from paper scrunching. I then enjoyed a really early night to read my book.

I going to watch it on catchup, see If I agree with the concensus. . As the Duke and the audience were laughing perhaps you've all got it wrong.
Will be a trial, I don't like Variety shows much.

I agree, it was uncomfortable watching. I do wonder why famous people get recognition if they don't do charity work. They are usually well paid.

rubysong Mon 18-Dec-23 08:22:29

We only watched bits of it. The singing from 'Frozen' (if that's what it was) was very shouty. I thought Mel C was the best. I don't like that mechanical voice thing Cher uses, but I suppose having her was a bit of a scoop.

joannapiano Mon 18-Dec-23 08:34:26

We also thought the whole thing was shouty and turned the sound off for parts of it. I was only watching to see Lang Lang but got bored and went to bed before he was on. Rick Astley was quite good.

Greenfinch Mon 18-Dec-23 08:57:02

Another No vote from me. I only watched half an hour and so cannot comment on the whole show but the obsequiousness of Bradley Walsh and the nondescript turns left me totally bored. Were the audience told to laugh I wonder?

cornergran Mon 18-Dec-23 09:04:36

Will watch via catch-up later and utilise the power of fast forward - I suspect quite a lot!

Sparklefizz Mon 18-Dec-23 09:36:03

I watched the first 15 minutes mainly to see William and Kate, and then I turned it off. Bradley Walsh was dire and embarrassing when he kept asking for an MBE/OBE/CBE etc.

Calendargirl Mon 18-Dec-23 09:45:50

I completely forgot it was on, not that I would have watched it.

Harking back to the days, so many years ago, when watching the Royal (Command) Performance as it was then known, was a ‘must’ in the tv year, near Christmas.

The Queen and the Queen Mother, in evening dresses, tiaras, jewellery, looking dressed to kill.

It was an honour back then to be asked to appear,

[sigh]

I've recorded it. I'm not a fan of Bradley Walsh, but I'll be able to swish through the bits I don't like.

Parsley3 Mon 18-Dec-23 10:05:12

Surely variety shows are now only seen as end of the pier entertainments. I doubt if young people are interested in seeing the Royals laughing and applauding like ordinary folk. Time to lay this tradition to rest.

henetha Mon 18-Dec-23 10:10:12

I think it raises money for retired actors/performers who live in a special residential home. I must google this to make sure I am correct. If so, then maybe it is worth while.

henetha Mon 18-Dec-23 10:11:36

Yes, it is. Brinsworth House and the Royal Variety charity.

Parsley3 Mon 18-Dec-23 10:14:37

Thanks, henetha.I should have known it was a good cause.

henetha Mon 18-Dec-23 10:17:53

I think all the performers work for free, and the tickets are quite expensive, so I imagine that quite a lot of money is raised.

Well , I am a BW fan , but didn’t think he was on top form from the get go , far too many sycophantic refererncing 🙄.
Actually on switched on this morning as I was jazzing up the tree that looked a bit sad 🎄watched the dancers/ acrobatics who were v good . But soon reached for the power switch after listening to Tom Allen , who I also like but who spoke as if he was on some sort of speed talking concoction 🤣
Very poor in my POV
