I have noticed quite a bit recently there seems to be a trend of spelling incorrectly. For instance; there instead of their when referring to someone. To instead of too when talking about too much of something. I,m sure there are other examples. It just seems another example of falling standards!

@ Celieanne86 - the version I was taught by an American friend was My Very Energetic Mother Just Shot Uncle Norman's Pig!

Surely, stalactites have to cling tight to the roof while stalagmites might eventually grow up high enough to meet them?

My absolute favourite spelling mnemonic is one that I'm told was thought up by a class of 8 year olds:
Dash in a real rush hurry or expect accidents!

At secondary school I had one teacher for English Literature and a completely different one for English Language .

Does this still happen ? I'm doubtful.

I am well educated, but find as I'm ageing I keep losing words and at times I just can't spell a certain word...very annoying !

Perhaps we don't do enough handwriting now.

I find that I've written words wrongly or made a mistake when writing cards which is annoying.

Sometimes as you get older, based on your brain health, you will find that you will forget how to spell simple words at random times. The word "home" might be spelled as "hoam", etc... The word "bowl" might be spoken as "ball". Memories fail and it has nothing to do with education or intelligence.
