Work/volunteering

That was nice, but what does this mean?

Oh phoenix you definitely need to offer one for yourself too. If you feel a bit insecure about it, just ask the MD if he 'wants' you to include a couple of lines about you too. I bet it didn't even occur to him.

Great work with Publisher by the way, well done!

Hello again all!

I have now finished the profiles and created a dummy website (yes, I'm amazed too!) all ready for an informal meeting/chat round the table tomorrow. I haven't done one for me, will wait and see what transpires tomorrow.

I have actually been rather naughty grin and in the lack of proper photos of staff members have selected and used ones that might be in some way appropriate! wink

Not exactly sure how the MD will feel about his bio/profile being accompanied by an image of a dead squirrel though..........

Phoenix is a new but already much-valued member of the team. She does all the bits no-one else had realised that they needed until she joined them.

*swap for enthusiastic if you really must!

Anne58 Thu 22-May-14 21:07:43

Just a thought!

Any here care to write my profile? grin

I think I will go and take sanctuary in the bath for a while...............

Gaga thank you for the compliment re humorous verse, much appreciated! However, for the company website there needs to be a degree of continuity, so the style really should be the same.

P.S. No-one at work knows about the verse thing! blush

rosequartz Thu 22-May-14 19:53:09

Well, Phoenix, he has done yours of course. grin

Gagagran Thu 22-May-14 19:49:46

Phoenix it's so good to recognise the enthusiasm and energy for your new job which bubbles through your post. The job, which took so much finding, seems to have turned out just great and long may that continue.

I agree that you should do your own profile and present it to the MD along with his. Could you perhaps do yours in humorous verse, which you are especially good at? Just a thought! I'm sure he means you to be included, otherwise why would he encourage you to get the uniform?

Nelliemoser Thu 22-May-14 19:42:56

Phoenix you sound as though you are beginning to enjoy yourself.

Given what we all have noticed about your writing style I am sure you can provide just the right level of humour they seem to like. Power to your elbow!

Oh ga I don't know if I could be so bold!

I'm actually taking a days holiday tomorrow (I've accrued a bit) and I've told him where all the files are on "the system" and also printed off my mock up of the home page and a few other bits. Perhaps he will think it all through over the long weekend and might mention something on Tuesday.

Although we have a professional web site designer doing it for us, I wasn't impressed with the mock up he sent us of the home page. He (the web designer) knows that we will have to provide a lot of the text because it is so technical, but even bearing that in mind I thought that the mock up was far too "wordy". So, I have been playing around with the web site function in Microsoft publisher. I have never used Publisher before, so a bit of a learning curve for me! (Mind you, the MD hasn't either)

The idea is that I produce printed literal hard copy examples of various pages/sections, so that a few of us can sit around the table and think about what might work.

I was like a child with a new toy "playing" with Publisher!

When you finish the MD's profile, show him the one that you've done for yourself too (yes, do one) and ask if he thinks it's okay. I can almost guarantee he won't quibble, but just in case he does tell him that people like to know who they're speaking to when they call admin.

Anne58 Thu 22-May-14 18:59:55

No, I did the MD's profile too!

It sort of went "XXX has worked in engineering ever since leaving college/uni when the world was still black and white. He is passionate about vintage machinery, and loves wildlife, although he does make an exception for the squirrels that are currently playing havoc with his recently planted woodland area"

I do plan to add something about projects/designs etc that he was involved in before starting his own business, but I need him to tell me about them.

janerowena Thu 22-May-14 18:54:38

grin

It sounds like fun. If you have to do it again, write I cannot find the words to describe this amazing man.

I think to the MD, you are with him, rather than with them, so that was why you weren't included.

Anne58 Thu 22-May-14 18:46:40

Thank you, all!

I was quite pleased with the ease at which I could produce the profiles (one of the few "creative" things that I have done for them so far) although I admit I did struggle with one of the younger engineers (not literally, of course).

He's always struck me as the sort of chap who would make strange noises while having sex, but of course I would never say so. I asked his immediate superior if he could think of anything, he just raised his eyebrows and said "That's a tough one, hard to think of anything interesting about X, he's so damn boring"

In the end I had to settle for something about playing the clarinet (I do hope that wasn't a euphemism shock) and that fact that we have never seen anyone spread their Vegemite quite so thickly. confused

Ana Thu 22-May-14 18:38:48

I agree, he probably never even thought...hmm (men!)

Grannyknot Thu 22-May-14 18:36:12

He was so dazzled by your prose that he overlooked the person under his nose? (made myself smile then)!

Charleygirl Thu 22-May-14 18:35:54

phoenix it is a tad difficult I think doing one for yourself. I get the impression that you are slowly working your way into that firm. The MD would notice the draught if you eg went on holiday tomorrow for a week.

Anne58 Thu 22-May-14 18:28:46

Evening all, hope everyone is as tickety boo as can reasonably be expected (awful grammar/syntax but my brain hurts from *learning new skills*)

Well, a few weeks ago the MD (to whom I report [that's better, isn't it?] as there is no middle management here) asked me to organise new kit for the troops. They have polo shirts, sweatshirts and fleeces with the company logo embroidered on, and plain navy blue cargo trousers. I think I may have mentioned this before, because that's when I disgraced myself laughing maniacally over the term "Hospitality trousers" blush )

He said that if I fancied wearing the same sort of thing, I could order some for myself, which I thought was a "good thing" especially as I am still in my probationary period. I have short hair and fully accept that in that sort of clothing I may end up looking like not only the token women within the firm, but also the token lesbian. Do I care? No, it will remove all that thinking about what to wear each day and may also alleviate the need to shave my legs on a regular basis.

For the last two days I have been tasked with preparing some copy for the new website, part of which was writing profiles for each member of staff. The MD wanted some light-hearted/humorous elements included so I set to. I finished them early this afternoon and gave them to him. He was pretty chuffed with it, which was great.

However, I didn't do one for me. And he didn't say "where's yours?" Soooo, what do I make of that ?
