Someone on another thread mentioned this and I would love to know what opportunities there are out there. Has anyone done it?

The only thing I know about is volunteering to help transcribe genealogical records for putting them online for free use. FreeBMD uses volunteers transcribing, and there are sister sites transcribing censusus (censi?) and other records, and local history societies also swelcome transcribers. It works by you downloading from them a photo scan of a printed page, typing the contents into a file, then uploading it to them. Each page is transcribed by more than one person, so that the two versions can be automatically compared for mistakes.

You have to be accurate. If you can't decipher something you can ask for help - some of the writing is beautiful copperplate, but some is the most dreadful scrawl. There is no deadline, you do it as and when you can.

But no pay!

Thanks, Elegran. I didn't know about that. There has not been much response to my question so it is probably as I suspected, there is not a lot of opportunity to earn money through working on the internet (as a freelance, at any rate).

There is a site ( I think its a US one) called www.clickworker.com I think.

That is paid work apparently but I have no info on it other than that.

The only other pay sites are the many Market Research companies that have online surveys that they pay for. But it is pennies per time.

What about becoming a Gransnet Local Editor? There is a chance to earn a little too.

NotTooOld Tue 17-Jan-17 22:05:48

Thanks for the website, NandG. I'll have a look at that.
Pittcity - thank you, I did wonder what that involved. Any idea where I click to find out?

Pittcity - it's ok. I've found it, thanks.
