The only thing I know about is volunteering to help transcribe genealogical records for putting them online for free use. FreeBMD uses volunteers transcribing, and there are sister sites transcribing censusus (censi?) and other records, and local history societies also swelcome transcribers. It works by you downloading from them a photo scan of a printed page, typing the contents into a file, then uploading it to them. Each page is transcribed by more than one person, so that the two versions can be automatically compared for mistakes.

You have to be accurate. If you can't decipher something you can ask for help - some of the writing is beautiful copperplate, but some is the most dreadful scrawl. There is no deadline, you do it as and when you can.
