A poem for our quiet corner - 'You're' - written by Sylvia Plath. As we've all experienced pregnancy, I thought that this beautifully descriptive poem as told from a pregnant mother's view point, would give us time to ponder the "quietness" inside the womb.

You're
Clownlike, happiest on your hands,
Feet to the stars, and moon-skulled,
Gilled like fish. A common-sense
Thumbs-down on the dodo's mode.
Wrapped up in yourself like a spool,
Trawling your dark as owls do.
Mute as a turnip from the Fourth
Of July to All Fools' Day,
O high-riser, my little loaf.

Vague as fog and looked for like mail.
Farther off than Australia.
Bent-backed atlas, our traveled prawn.
Snug as a bud and at home
Like a sprat in a pickle jug.
A creel of eels, all ripples.
Jumpy as a Mexican bean.
Right, like a well done sum.
A clean slate, with your own face on.

Notsogrand...I'm delighted with your comment. My son asked me to learn and recite this poem at a special family gathering. I found it rather tricky to understand at first. However, I grew to love it and the recital went well. I particularly like the lines...

'Right, like a well done sum.
A clean slate, with your own face on.'

Every new member of a family is born with a 'clean slate'...I find that to be very comforting.

I think we all start each day with a clean slate supernana. What ever went before doesn't have to be dragged with you.
I read a poem years ago...it was about coping with the 'troubles' we face.
I don't remember it all, but there was a line 'Build for yourself a strong box' with advice to put your troubles inside the box. I've never forgotten the last line 'Then sit on the lid and laugh!'
I have many strong boxes, and I do a lot of sitting on lids and laughing.
It works.

I'm so happy with our quiet corner...the low hum of pleasant, friendly banter...the cosy atmosphere against the wild wind outside the door...the clinking of glasses as we raise a glass of cheer...the rustle of chocolate wrapper...the clicking of needles...all this and still plenty of room for more...

What a lovely happy place! I've discovered it just as I have to rush off but look forward to joining you this evening. Have a pleasant afternoon and chug through the chores so we can relax later.
